Chapter 36
Alex had finally reached the Manitowoc marina. He was dropped off several blocks away and walked the final half mile. Once he spotted the parking lot, he looked around.
No police or agents that I can tell, but if they’re undercover, how would I know?
He chuckled at the thought, but with his newly shaved head, two-day stubble, glasses, and ball cap, he didn’t look anything like that fake driver’s license photo.
The parking lot was full of cars, which gave Alex a sense of relief.
Nothing about the Jeep stood out, and nothing about him did either.
His cooler and backpack were locked in the boat.
He was just a lone guy walking to his vehicle.
Alex climbed in and drove away without a single problem or prying eye.
Everything was working in his favor. After contacting his client and asking when the last hit needed to be done, he planned to hunker down in his apartment until the entire contract was fulfilled.
Then and only then, and with photo proof showing the work was complete, would he get his final payment.
He would shake hands with his client and start again somewhere new.
He considered Illinois, but maybe he’d continue in his boat along the shoreline until he reached the Indiana coastline.
He hadn’t given the future a lot of thought.
I need to get through this final hit, then I’ll be off scot-free with a huge amount of cash to live off of. For now, the boat is safely moored in Waukegan, and it’s paid up for a month. That’ll give me plenty of time to make a decision.
Alex planned to call his client after he arrived home.
For the next ninety minutes, he would listen to music while keeping an eye on his surroundings.
That night, he’d relax, order food to be delivered, and stay invisible.
In a few days, Alex would return the Jeep to the rental agency in Slinger then catch a ride to Milwaukee.
He needed a vehicle for the final hit, and once he learned when that would be, he could rent another car.
