Chapter 49
Alex enjoyed his last day at the Milwaukee apartment. His time there had served him well. He packed the totes he’d bought that morning and cleaned every room. He didn’t care about the security deposit, since giving the landlord a forwarding address to mail a check to wasn’t a smart idea.
He remembered the luminol that still sat on the floor in the back seat of the Jeep.
I should go get it and spray the bathroom. There has to be blood that I missed somewhere in the apartment. Best to double-check.
After grabbing a grocery bag, Alex took it down to the garage with him. No need to run into another tenant in the elevator with a bottle of luminol in hand.
Yeah, that would be awkward.
Back upstairs and with the luminol in the apartment, Alex headed to the bathroom. Because the bathroom was white, he didn’t think he would find traces of blood anywhere, but being cautious had given him success so far.
Alex began spraying the white tile walls, the tub, and the floor. Within seconds, the room fluoresced like a crime scene—which it was.
“Holy shit, I don’t believe this. Thank God for luminol and the fact that even criminals can buy it.”
It was time to get busy. Alex spent the rest of the day scrubbing and rescrubbing every floor, wall, and anything else that lit up like a Christmas tree. His focus was the bathroom, and after he’d scrubbed it several times, every speck of blood was gone.
He dropped the sponge into the bucket, squeezed it out, then poured the water into the toilet and flushed it three times. The bucket and sponge were placed in a garbage bag then into the household supplies tote.
One more look around and he was set. He would sleep on the couch that night then meet with the client the next morning to get his last payment.
Alex was excited to move on. Waukegan was never a city he’d given much consideration, but for the time being, it would be perfect. He’d sell the boat then possibly move inland.
Kansas City could be interesting, and it’s a relatively large city. Maybe even the Southwest, although I’m not the biggest fan of the desert. Florida is too humid and wet in the summer, but I guess I’ll go where the next contract takes me.
After his work was complete, Alex loaded the Jeep then walked down the street and ordered Chinese takeout. For his last night there, he would eat supper on the balcony overlooking Lake Michigan, a lake that held secrets and several bodies, hopefully forever.
