Chapter Twenty-Three
Mateo
Eternal Love
There is a peculiar kind of silence that settles over a coven house before something monumental.
It is not the absence of sound. Ours is a home of perpetual movement, muted footsteps, distant murmurs, and the soft hum of technology I insisted upon dragging into a centuries-old existence, but rather a tightening of the air itself.
Expectation. Tension. The sense that the walls are holding their breath. Tonight, the compound feels like that. Charged, watching, and waiting.
I stand at the far edge of the courtyard, my palms resting against the cool stone of the low wall, worn smooth by decades of restless pacing.
Behind me, lanterns cast molten gold pools across the lawn, their glow flickering against the darkened line of the Black Forest. The sky above is a deep velvet stretch, stars scattered like careless diamonds, but I find no comfort in the beauty of it.
Because my mind is not on the ceremony. Not entirely.
My mind is on Harlow. Always Harlow. And on the quiet, unsettling unease that has wrapped itself around this coven since the Blood Council announced their attendance.
Footsteps approach behind me, soft, human, impossibly familiar. I do not need to turn to know who it is. My body reacts long before my conscious mind registers her presence.
Every time. Every fucking time.
Warmth floods my veins as her scent curls around me like a living thing. Citrus and something uniquely hers, threaded now with nerves she tries, and fails, to hide.
“You’re brooding again.”
Her voice is gentle, teasing, but there is tension beneath it. A tightness that mirrors my own. I turn slowly, and the sight of her steals the breath from my lungs.
Harlow stands framed by lantern light spilling from the lawn, dark hair cascading over bare shoulders, her ceremonial gown a flowing cascade of midnight silk.
The fabric hugs her curves with an intimacy that feels criminal, the deep neckline exposing the elegant line of her throat - a throat I have dreamed of marking more times than I can count.
Not lust. Never just lust. But reverence, possession, and a love so fucking consuming it borders on madness.
“You are the most stunning creature I have ever laid eyes on,” I murmur.
Her cheeks flush, that soft pink bloom I have come to crave. “You’re biased.”
“I am,” I admit without hesitation. “Hopelessly.”
She rolls her eyes, but the smile tugging at her lips betrays her pleasure. Still, I see it, the flicker of apprehension in her gaze as she moves closer.
“The Council will be here soon.”
The words drop between us like a stone into still water. Ripples of discomfort spread instantly through my chest.
I reach for her on instinct, my hands settling at her waist, drawing her into me. Her palms land against my chest, grounding and intoxicating all at once.
“They will,” I say quietly.
Harlow studies my face, her brow knitting. She has learned me far too quickly, learned the subtle shifts in my expression, the tension in my jaw, the storm clouds gathering behind my eyes.
“You don’t trust them.” It is not a question.
I exhale slowly. “Trust is ... complicated where the Blood Council is concerned.”
“That’s not an answer.”
A faint smile tugs at my lips despite everything. My fierce, relentless consort. Always pushing and always demanding the truth.
I brush my thumb along the curve of her jaw. “It is the only one I can safely give you.”
Her eyes narrow slightly. “Mateo...”
The way she says my name should be illegal.
I lean down, pressing my forehead to hers. “We are doing exactly what we discussed.”
Her shoulders tense beneath my hands.
Earlier, in the privacy of my chambers, we had pieced together everything. Every strange encounter. Every unsettling detail. Every instinctive whisper of wrongness clawing at the back of my mind.
The jagter attack. Her near abduction. The subtle inconsistencies in Council communication. And most damning of all...
The way one of the Council members had looked at her during their last remote audience.
Predatory and calculating.
Harlow’s fingers curl slightly into my shirt. “I still don’t like this.”
“Neither do I.”
“Playing dumb feels like walking into a trap.”
“It may very well be.”
Her heartbeat spikes, a frantic flutter against my chest.
I tighten my hold reflexively. “But we are not walking in blind.”
A throat clears behind us. Deep. Measured. Power laced through every syllable.
“Good. I would hate to think my coven incapable of basic strategic reasoning.”
Aziel.
I straighten immediately, though I do not release Harlow. My Maker stands a few steps away, arms folded, dark eyes gleaming beneath lantern light. He looks every inch the ancient predator he is—controlled, lethal, and absolutely unreadable.
Yet beneath it all, I sense his own unease.
Kyson steps into view beside him, his expression a familiar mask of perpetual irritation. Scarlet lingers slightly behind, her sharp gaze scanning everything, always alert.
Head of Security. Headache incarnate. Family.
“We are not fools,” I say dryly.
Kyson snorts. “Debatable.”
Harlow stiffens slightly in my arms. I feel it instantly and gently squeeze her waist. Scarlet catches the movement and smirks knowingly. Aziel ignores the exchange entirely.
“The Council will arrive within minutes.”
The air shifts again.
I nod once. “The coven is prepared.”
Kyson’s jaw tightens. “Every member is up to speed.”
The decision had not been made lightly. After Harlow and I voiced our concerns, Aziel had listened.
Truly listened, his ancient mind dissecting possibilities with chilling efficiency.
Kyson, predictably, had resisted the idea of “playing dumb” for precisely three seconds before recognizing the tactical advantage.
Observe, gather information, and confirm suspicions without revealing distrust.
And if our instincts proved wrong ... we would lose nothing.
If they proved right ... we might save the coven. And all our consorts.
Harlow pulls slightly from my chest, her gaze flicking between Aziel and Kyson. “They won’t sense anything?”
Aziel’s lips curve faintly. “The Blood Council is powerful, child. But they are not omniscient.”
Kyson adds, “And if they’re hiding something, they’ll be too busy hiding it to notice our ruse.”
Scarlet grins. “Paranoia meets paranoia. Should be fun.” I resist the urge to groan.
The compound gates hum. Every vampire in the courtyard freezes. A ripple of energy slams through the bond I share with Harlow. Fear, sharp and electric, slices through her.
I pull her tight against me.
“They’re here,” Kyson mutters.
Aziel turns without another word, his presence slicing through the tension like a blade, and we follow.
The Blood Council does not simply enter a space. They dominate it. Even before I see them, I feel them. Ancient power saturates the courtyard, pressing against my senses with suffocating weight. It is a reminder, brutal and absolute, of a hierarchy older than any of us.
Four figures glide through the iron gates.
Immortal.
Untouchable.
Terrifying.
I have faced jagters with less dread.
Harlow’s fingers tremble slightly in mine.
Council Member One is tall, severe, his silver hair falling like liquid moonlight around a face carved from stone. His eyes sweep the courtyard with clinical detachment.
Council Member Two radiates quiet menace, dark curls framing sharp features, lips perpetually twisted in mild disdain.
Council Member Three ... is the one who unsettles me most. Female and rare. Her beauty is ethereal and wrong all at once. Golden hair cascades over shoulders draped in crimson silk, eyes glowing with predatory amusement as they drift lazily across the assembled coven.
Then they land on Harlow. And linger. A pause so slight most would miss it. But I do not. Because something cold coils violently in my gut. Not hunger and not desire. But instinct.
Harlow stiffens beside me. She feels it too.
The Council continues forward. But Aziel steps ahead, his posture a flawless mask of reverent composure.
“Honored Council.”
Formalities spill through the courtyard, greetings, acknowledgments, ancient rituals of power and politics, but my world narrows to that golden-haired predator.
She is watching, assessing, and measuring my consort like prey.
Kyson shifts subtly nearer, his stance tightening. He sees it too. But neither of us voices our accusations, and neither of us shows any reaction. We play dumb, and we observe.
****
The ceremony chamber glows with candlelight.
Thousands of flames flicker against stone walls etched with centuries-old markings, their golden glow reflecting across polished obsidian floors. The air is thick with incense, ancient magic humming beneath every breath.
Harlow stands beside me, radiant and nervous and utterly mine. I feel her fear. Her anticipation. Her trust. That trust guts me. Because tonight is joy layered over unease. Love shadowed by suspicion.
The Council watches from elevated seats, their expressions unreadable.
Aziel’s voice carries through the chamber. Ancient. Commanding. Ritualistic.
Words of binding spill into the air, magic curling like smoke around us. “Before the Blood Council, before the coven, before eternity itself ... we bear witness to the binding of souls. A union not chosen, but destined. Not given, but claimed by fate.”
He takes her hand and makes a slice in her palm, dripping blood into the ceremonial goblet. My focus anchors to Harlow, to the way candlelight dances across her skin, to the rapid flutter of her pulse, to the tremble of her breath.
She looks at me, and everything else disappears. “I’m ready,” she whispers.
My throat tightens painfully. “So am I, mi alma.”
“By this blood, I, Harlow, bind myself to you, Mateo. Ordained by fate, forged by blood. You are mine as I am yours. From this night onward, only true and everlasting death will separate us.” She holds the goblet out to me, and I smile, taking it from her and drinking it all down before repeating the same process.
Her smile is soft, trusting, and devastating. Magic surges and the bond ignites like wildfire. Pain and ecstasy collide in blinding force as our souls slam together. The chamber erupts in energy, ancient power roaring through my veins, through hers, through us.
Mine.
Mine.
Mine.
Harlow gasps, her body arching as the connection seals, and I pull her against my chest, holding her close. Above us ... three Council Members watch. Smiling. Not warmly. Not approvingly. But knowingly.
And the cold dread in my chest solidifies into something far darker. Because that look ... is not curiosity. It is recognition. And whatever game the Blood Council is playing...
We are now irrevocably part of it.
Harlow’s fingers find my chin, and my focus snaps back to her.
The breath drains from my chest in favor of something stronger at the sight of her fucking smile.
It’s perhaps the warmest, most open expression I’ve yet seen on her face.
She’s absolutely radiant. The trust and love in her eyes, in that smile, I know in an instant I will protect and cherish her for every remaining moment of my existence.
And I can see in her eyes what she’s trying to convey.
It doesn’t matter what the Blood Council is up to. She trusts me to stay by her side through it all, just as she vows to stay by mine. So let them play.
We’ve already won.
