CHAPTER 6
LEON P.O.V.
The concrete wall against my back is weeping, cold damp seeping straight through the wool of my suit jacket.
I don't give a shit. I’m not looking at the rat tied to the metal chair in the center of the basement, and I’m definitely not looking at Sven.
Sven is a blunt instrument. Right now, he’s burying a heavy, rusted wrench into the rat’s ribs, and the wet, hollow thud of metal on bone is just background noise.
The struggling dehumidifier in the corner hums a steady, grating pitch, fighting a losing battle against the smell of damp earth and stale copper. My eyes are locked entirely on Alessia.
She’s standing stiffly near the door, trapped in the flickering light of a single caged fluorescent bulb overhead, trying so goddamn hard to maintain that stoic, sterile FBI facade.
I track every microscopic flinch of her body.
I watch the way her pupils dilate in the low light, the rapid, frantic thrum of her pulse beating against the thin skin at the base of her throat.
I absentmindedly rub a fresh bruise on my right knuckle, the dull ache grounding me, my eyes never leaving her sharp profile.
"Focus, Alessia," I say. My voice cuts easily through the sound of the beating. "Don't look at the floor. Look at the cost of betrayal."
Sven lands another sickening blow. The wet thud echoes off the concrete.
The rat screams—a high-pitched, gurgling sound that makes my teeth ache.
I watch Alessia swallow hard. The tension in her sharp collarbones is visible through the collar of her shirt, and her fingers twitch against the seams of her utility trousers.
She’s itching for a weapon she doesn't have. She wants to be the hero. It’s written all over her rigid posture.
"You want to stop him?" I ask, my tone entirely conversational. I step away from the wall. "Is your training telling you to intervene, Agent Heller?"
Her jaw clicks. She’s grinding her teeth so hard I can hear it from three feet away. I watch her fight that core, pathetic instinct to protect the weak. It takes sheer, blinding willpower for her to stand completely still and just let the horror happen.
Three fucking years she spent in my orbit playing the perfect polished professional, the pragmatic logistics girl who never got her hands dirty, and the whole time I knew it was a mask.
I could smell the feral shit hiding right under her skin, the dark, resilient core she kept locked up tight for her federal handlers.
Now I get to rip that mask off. I get to be the one to tear it down and see the creature she really is beneath all that righteous bullshit.
I adjust my silver cufflink, feeling the cold metal against my wrist, catching the dim light.
My movements are slow. Deliberate. The shadow of my broad shoulders stretches across the filthy floor, creeping right up to the toes of her boots.
"Three years of playing the saint," I murmur, mostly to myself, though I know she hears every word. "I wonder how much of that was a lie."
The rat spits a mouthful of blood onto the floor. He lifts his head, his face a swollen, purple mess, and looks directly at Alessia. He recognizes something in her—some lingering, pathetic flicker of mercy that he knows he isn't going to get from me or Sven.
"Please... you don't belong with them," the rat sobs, his voice cracking, coughing up another wet spray. A single drop of his blood splashes directly onto the toe of Alessia’s black leather shoe. She doesn't flinch, but her dark brown eyes widen to the size of coins. "Help me, please!"
I wait. I actually want her to say something stupid. I almost hope she pulls rank or begs for his life so I can punish her for it, but she just stands there, suffocating on her own morality.
I step fully out of the shadows. The temperature in the room seems to drop as I move into her space.
Her eyes dart toward me. The fear and adrenaline radiating off her hit me in waves, like heat rising off hot pavement.
It's fucking intoxicating. My shadow completely swallows her smaller frame as I stand right beside her. I let the scent of my sandalwood cologne cut through the basement’s filth, letting her breathe me in.
"He thinks you're his savior," I say. "Show him how wrong he is."
I raise a single bruised knuckle. Sven sees the gesture and immediately stops mid-swing.
He steps back into the periphery of the room, his massive chest heaving from the exertion.
He wipes his bloody hands on a dirty rag, the rough fabric rasping loud in the sudden quiet.
The room goes entirely still, filled only by the rat's ragged, wet gasps and the tap-tap-tap of his blood dripping from the chair onto the concrete.
"That's enough, Sven," I say, my eyes still boring into the side of Alessia's head. "We're changing tactics."
I walk over to a stainless steel surgical tray sitting on a rusty work table.
It looks horrifyingly out of place in this grime.
I pick up a bloodied combat knife left over from a previous session, testing the heavy weight of the hilt and the balance of the steel.
I don't look at the rat. I run my thumb right along the flat of the blade, smearing a thick streak of red across the cold metal.
The scrape of the knife against the metal tray rings out.
"Steel doesn't lie, Alessia," I tell her. "It’s efficient. Honest."
I walk back to her, closing the distance slowly.
It’s a deliberate, stalking gait that forces her to tilt her chin up to look at me.
She doesn't retreat. She doesn't step back.
I respect the defiance, even as I watch the rapid, frantic pulse jumping in her throat like a trapped bird.
I stop so close our clothes brush. My heat radiates straight into her cold, stiff frame.
My eyes drop to her lips for a fraction of a second, watching them part as she struggles to drag air into her lungs.
"Steady now," I say. "You're doing so well, Agent."
I casually extend my arm. I offer her the handle of the combat knife. The blood on it is still fresh, a dark, sticky smear on the black grip.
"Take it," I command, my voice smooth but carrying the weight of an anvil. "Prove you're as useful as your file says."
Alessia stares at the bloody handle. She shakes her head, a tight, jerky movement. She tucks her chin, trying to create a distance between us that doesn't physically exist.
"No." Her voice is a raw, shaky whisper. "I'm not doing this, Leon."
I chuckle. It's a dark, vibrating sound deep in my chest. Did she really think she could just observe?
"You think you have a choice?" I lean in close. The ghost of my breath hits her neck, making her shiver. I keep my voice a lethal velvet murmur right against her ear. "Sven is a butcher, Alessia. You can be a surgeon. Make it quick, or let him suffer."
I watch her face. I watch the internal war completely tear her apart.
I see the exact second her pragmatic, survivor instinct violently overrides her federal rulebook.
The cold logic clicks into place behind her eyes, turning that warm dark brown into flat, dead flint.
She realizes that if she doesn't do it, the guy gets peeled apart for the next three hours. She’s rationalizing the horror.
She’s choosing the lesser evil. It is the most beautiful fucking transformation I have ever seen.
Her hand stops shaking. Her fingers go unnaturally still.
"There she is," I whisper. "The woman I've been waiting for."
With a hand that is now steady but freezing cold, Alessia reaches out and grips the handle of the knife.
Her fingers brush against my bruised, warm knuckles.
The contrast between her ice-cold skin and my heat sends a dark, electric jolt straight down to my fucking core.
She takes the grip, her fingers slipping slightly on the sticky blood before locking in.
"Good," I say. "Grip it tight. Don't let it slip."
As soon as the weapon is fully in her possession, I smoothly step around her.
I step right up flush against her back, pressing my broad chest into her spine, completely enveloping her athletic frame.
I cage her in. I am a solid wall of muscle and intent behind her, cutting off any ridiculous idea she might have about turning that blade on me.
I hook my chin over her shoulder, my coarse stubble grazing her soft cheek.
"I've got you," I tell her. "Don't even think about turning around."
I reach my right arm around her, my large, calloused hand completely swallowing hers over the grip of the knife.
I can feel the frantic, bird-like thumping of her heart beating against my forearm as I lock her hand into a killing grip.
I squeeze her hand hard, forcing her fingers to bite deeply into the leather.
"Feel that?" I ask, staring at our joined hands. "That's the power of life and death."
I physically march her forward. Her boots scuff lifelessly against the floor as I dictate every single step, moving her like a puppet until we are standing directly over the trembling rat.
My chest heaves against her back as I bark a command in Russian at the bleeding mess in the chair.
The low, guttural vibration of my voice echoes right through her lungs.
I demand the location of the stolen shipments.
"Ask him, Alessia," I order, my mouth right next to her ear. "Tell him what happens if he lies to us."
The rat violently shakes his head, stammering out a desperate, pathetic denial. He lies.
My grip on Alessia’s hand tightens like a vise.
Without giving her a fraction of a second to hesitate, I force her arm forward.
I guide the tip of the blade straight down until it meets resistance against the man's shirt, then push.
The steel slides in with a sickening pop, puncturing the skin and sinking a full inch into the meat of his shoulder.
"Deep enough?" I ask her, ignoring the scream tearing out of the man’s throat. "He's not listening yet."
Bright red blood immediately wells up around the steel.
It surges out, coating Alessia’s knuckles.
She lets out a sharp, pained gasp, sucking in air through her teeth.
Her entire body goes completely rigid, vibrating like a tuned string against my chest. But she doesn't drop the knife.
She doesn't even try to pull away. Her grip holds tight. Her training takes over the trauma.
"Look at it, Alessia," I order harshly. She squeezes her eyes shut for a second. "Don't you dare close your eyes."
She opens them. They are empty. Cold.
The rat shrieks, the sound hitting a new, agonizing octave that bounces off the concrete walls.
He breaks instantly, sobbing and screaming out the exact address of the stash house.
I halt Alessia's hand, twisting my wrist just slightly to keep the blade from going deeper, satisfied with the damage.
Her breath is coming in short, jagged, frantic bursts.
Her chest heaves violently against my arm.
The room falls suddenly quiet after the scream, the silence filled only by her panicked breathing.
"See?" I murmur, easing the pressure on her hand. "You're a natural, Agent."
I grab her wrist and pull the knife out of the meat of the man's shoulder. I pry the weapon from her stiff, locked fingers, peeling them back one by one. I toss the knife carelessly back onto the steel tray. The metal clatters loudly, sounding like a gunshot in the damp room.
I don't let her go. I keep my left arm banded tightly around her waist, holding her upright because I know the second I let go, her legs are going to give out. With my right hand, I wipe a smear of the rat's blood off her thumb with my own, then bring my thumb to my mouth and lick it off my skin.
"Let it go," I tell her. "I've got you."
I bury my face in the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply.
She smells incredible. It’s a potent, intoxicating mix of that subtle floral perfume she wears, the sharp, sour tang of pure adrenaline, and the heavy metallic stench of fresh copper.
It’s the scent of corruption. I let my nose brush against the racing pulse point on her neck.
"You smell like him now," I whisper, my voice dropping to a gravelly, intimate register. I nip at her earlobe, a sharp, possessive bite that makes her jump. "You smell like us."
She is shaking so violently in my grip her teeth are chattering. I press my lips to the shell of her ear.
"Good girl," I praise her, letting the dark, degrading words sink straight into her panicked brain. "So easy to break you, wasn't it? Look at your hands, Alessia. That's who you are now."
A full-body shudder racks her frame. Her knees buckle entirely.
I take her full weight against my chest. A deep, hot flush spreads down her neck, and she leans her head back against my shoulder, exposing her throat to me, desperately seeking the only physical stability left in the room.
Her body is betraying her mind, reacting to the praise, leaning into the dominance.
"That's it," I say smoothly. "Leaning on me already."
I finally step back, releasing her abruptly.
The sudden loss of my body heat makes her sway on her feet.
Her eyes are totally glazed, staring blankly at the blood drying on her hands.
I shift instantly, seamlessly back into the role I built this empire on.
I look over at Sven, who is already moving forward to unbuckle the bleeding man from the chair with clinical indifference.
"Clean it up, Sven," I order, my tone flat and strictly business. "If the address is wrong, call me. I'll send her back down to finish him."
I look down at Alessia. A fine spray of arterial blood dots the lapel of her pristine, minimalist blazer.
It looks like a brand of ownership. I place a heavy, possessive hand flat on her shoulder, my thumb rubbing the fabric right over her hammering heart.
I steer her toward the steep, dark stairs leading out of the basement.
"Upstairs. Now," I tell her, walking her toward the cold metal door handle waiting at the top. "You’ve earned a rest, Agent Heller."
