CHAPTER 25 #2
The hidden panel in the wall slid open and shut with a nearly silent thrum.
He was gone. The master bedroom instantly felt cavernous and freezing.
I was alone, tethered to a steel post in a penthouse that was seconds away from becoming a federal war zone.
My ears strained, catching the first distant, heavy thud of a breaching ram impacting the reinforced doors on the floor below.
The transition from undercover operative to discarded, chained asset was complete.
I curled my bare toes deep into the mattress, trying to ground myself in the physical reality of the bed while my brain completely short-circuited.
"Motherfucker..." I breathed out into the empty room. The total absence of his scent was suffocating. "I'm going to kill you, Leon."
I had no choice. The only way out of this room alive was right through Trenton’s strike team.
I had to play the fucking part. The synchronized, heavy thuds of tactical boots echoed in the outer hallway, vibrating through the floorboards.
I used my free hand to violently yank the duvet up, dragging the thick fabric across my body and desperately trying to tuck it under my handcuffed arm to hide my nakedness.
It was a pathetic, microscopic struggle for a shred of dignity before my entire world was invaded.
I caught a glimpse of my own reflection in the darkened window pane—pale, wild-eyed, and completely wrecked.
"Think. Think, Alessia. Tactical assessment," I muttered to myself, forcing my FBI training to override the panic. The smell of burning circuits drifted through the vents—they were using a localized EMP to fry Leon's biometric locks. "Comms are dead. No weapon. One arm tethered."
I looked down at my clean, scrubbed skin glowing under the red strobe.
The realization slammed into my chest. Leon didn't wash me in that shower to be kind.
He didn't carry me in there to wash the trauma away.
He explicitly scrubbed me raw to remove the microscopic gunshot residue from the rival leader's murder I committed two hours ago.
He deliberately destroyed the forensic evidence that proved I was an active shooter, forcing me back into the role of a helpless, captive victim.
Even his goddamn mercy was a cold, calculated move to control the narrative.
He didn't save my soul. He just cleaned the murder weapon.
"You calculating bastard," I hissed at the empty room, rubbing my thumb over my scentless skin. "You washed the blood off so I'd look like a doll."
The sound of shattering glass in the outer living room cut through my spiraling thoughts. The heavy smell of cordite followed instantly.
"Breach, breach, breach!" a muffled voice roared from the hallway.
I flinched, tucking my chin hard into my chest and pulling the duvet tight over my ears. I knew the exact layout of a federal breach. I used to run these exact drills. I knew the timing. I knew where the charges were placed. I knew exactly where the canisters would land.
"Incoming," I whispered to myself, squeezing my eyes shut so hard I saw static. "One... two... three..."
The C4 charge plastered to the bedroom's double oak doors detonated.
The sound wasn't just noise; it was a physical fist that slammed directly into my chest cavity.
The massive doors were pulverized into splinters and drywall dust, blowing into the bedroom like a wave of shrapnel.
The heavy steel bed violently shook on its frame.
A piece of pulverized drywall landed directly on my bleeding lip, tasting heavily of chalk and sulfur.
The heat of the blast wave washed over the bed.
Two cylindrical canisters skittered rapidly across the hardwood floor. Magnesium flashbangs.
They detonated in rapid succession. A blinding, white-hot void consumed the room, accompanied by 170 decibels of pure concussive force.
My entire world dissolved into a screaming wall of white.
My eardrums blew out, replaced by a high-pitched, agonizing whine that entirely drowned out the shouts of the strike team.
I was completely deaf, totally blind, and chained down.
My free hand reflexively clawed at the duvet, a primitive, desperate grab for cover I couldn't even see.
The acrid smoke from the charges filled the air, choking me.
As my vision slowly, painfully began to return through the haze, the room was dancing with green and red tactical lasers.
The beams sliced through the dust, sweeping the walls, the floor, and finally converging on the bed.
A steady, cold green dot settled perfectly over my heart, highly visible against the white duvet.
I could see the heavy silhouettes of the SWAT operatives moving in—faceless, armored ghosts in gas masks.
They didn't see an agent on that bed. They saw a target.
"CLEAR LEFT!" a distorted voice barked over the ringing in my ears.
"TARGET SIGHTED! ON THE BED!"
Six heavily armored operatives collapsed on my position in a tight formation, their weapon-mounted flashlights creating an impenetrable, blinding wall of 1000-lumen glare.
I flinched, turning my face away and squinting against the harsh light.
They didn't call out my name. They didn't ask if I was injured.
Their rifles were leveled directly at my skull.
"HANDS! SHOW ME YOUR HANDS!" the lead operative screamed, the laser dot on my chest shaking slightly.
"SHE'S CHAINED! I REPEAT, TARGET IS RESTRAINED!" another yelled.
The lead guy stepped forward, his heavy tactical boot crunching on shattered glass, and roughly kicked the duvet aside to check for hidden weapons.
The fabric slid off me, completely exposing my naked, bruised shoulders and my chained arm to the harsh white-blue tint of their lights.
The cold air hit my bare skin. I tried to pull back instinctively, but the heavy steel chain violently jerked my arm, making the metal clatter loudly against the post. My toes curled into the silk sheets in a pathetic, futile attempt to hide myself from six heavily armed men staring down the barrel of their rifles at my naked body.
"Room is secure!" a voice echoed near the doorway.
"Check the closet! Where the fuck is Falk?"
The operative standing directly over me keyed his shoulder mic.
The static hissed over the comms. "Target acquired.
Chained to the bed. Naked. Looks like he had his fun," he reported, his voice distorted and clinical through his mask.
He sounded genuinely disappointed. Like my life was a garbage consolation prize.
"The nest is empty. No sign of the Alpha. "
The shadow of the operative loomed entirely over me, stretching across the mattress. Leon was gone. He actually vanished and left me chained naked to his bed to take the fall.
The crowd of operatives suddenly parted near the blown-out doorway.
A man wearing a dark tactical vest over a dress shirt walked through the smoke.
He didn't bother wearing a gas mask. He stepped up to the edge of the bed, planting his hands casually on his hips. It was Trenton’s Lieutenant.
One of the corrupt inner circle that had sold my identity to the syndicate in the first place.
He looked down at my chained, shaking form with a sickening mixture of disgust and dark, unrestrained satisfaction.
The smell of cheap peppermint gum radiating from his breath cut right through the cordite.
"Look at you, Heller," he sneered, nudging a discarded silk pillow with the reinforced toe of his boot.
I looked up at him through my tangled hair, gritting my teeth so hard my jaw ached. I should have put a bullet in his forehead three years ago when I had the chance.
"Quite the domestic scene," he drawled, his eyes raking over my exposed skin. "Did you enjoy the three years undercover, or just the last three nights?"
He leaned over, using the cold, black barrel of his sidearm to casually lift the edge of the duvet higher, exposing the heavy steel cuffs around my wrist. The metal of the gun pressed coldly against my bare thigh.
"I wonder what Trenton’s going to say when he sees how ‘integrated’ you got," he mocked. A few of the surrounding operatives let out a low, predatory chuckle that made my fucking skin crawl. "You look like a used-up syndicate whore, Heller."
My fingers clenched into a fist, knuckles turning stark white. Leon warned me. He explicitly told me they would treat me like a monster, and he was dead right.
An operative stepped forward, producing a master tactical key.
He grabbed my wrist roughly, shoving the key into the cuff.
The absolute second the steel locking mechanism clicked open, he didn't let my arm go.
He violently twisted my arm behind my back, using a brutal arm-bar to force me face-down into the mattress.
The sharp pain shot instantly through my shoulder socket.
He yanked my free arm back to meet the other, securing both my wrists together in thick, heavy-duty white plastic zip-ties.
The plastic teeth made a sharp, ratcheting sound as he pulled them as tight as they would go, the edges instantly biting into my skin.
"Don't move, you traitorous bitch!" he barked, driving his knee into the small of my back.
