Epilogue III

Garrick

I run down the hall towards Emilia’s suite. The guards look at me in confusion as I pass them. The doors to her suite come into view and, without preamble, the guard on the right opens the door. Maybe he knows something is wrong so he doesn’t wait and knock.

Bursting into her suite I find her in a chair reading a book.

“You let her go back?!” My voice is loud and full of anger and fear. My heart has been pounding since I found out.

“What?” Emilia sits up, setting her book on the table beside her chair.

“How could you let her go back! It’s not safe! They’re going to force her into an arranged marriage!” I’m pacing back and forth now because I can’t contain the anxious feeling clawing at my insides.

“What was I supposed to do, Garrick? Force her to stay here? Lock her in the dungeons? ”

“Yes!” I don’t mean it. I would never want her locked away but now she is gone. Emilia grabs my arm to stop my pacing and holds my stare.

“I know you don’t mean that. But it was her choice. We talked about it; she thinks this is the best way to get out from under her father’s control.” She says calmly.

“They won’t let her do it. The moment she gets there, they will lock her away and make her marry that disgusting man.” I see the fear in her eyes as well, she knows that’s what’s going to happen.

“I wasn’t going to be another person to take her choices away.” Emilia is right. If Emilia had forced Alette to stay, she would have resented Emilia.

“I should have told her…” I try to pull back the tears that beg to fall from my eyes. “I was scared.” Emilia wraps her arms around my waist.

“I know, brother,” she whispers.

I refuse to let this be the end. “I’m going after her,” I say.

Emilia pulls away and looks up at me, tears in her eyes. “Please be safe.” Emotion wraps around my throat. Giving her one more quick hug, I leave her suite.

I won’t let my fears stop me this time. Alette will know. She’ll know she is my soul-bond and I will cross the Human Kingdom to tell her.
