33. Sabine
SABINE
The great battle is over and I am still shaking from the aftershock of watching the man I love tear through an entire sky of enemies to reach me.
The cloth in my hand is warm and dark with ash and dried blood that does not belong to him, and I work in silence, dragging it slow and deliberate across the underside of his left wing where the membrane is thinnest and the battle residue clings to the folds like soot.
Tovian sits on the stone floor of our chamber, elbows on his knees, head bowed. His frame is massive and trembling. I have watched him rip granite apart with his bare hands. I have never watched him fight himself.
"It's still pulling at you," I say quietly.
"Yes."
I move the cloth along the obsidian sweep of a primary wing-strut and feel the muscle beneath flinch.
The black static of bloodlust crackles out through my fingertips every time I make contact—I don't fully understand the mechanics of it, but I feel it.
Like drawing a splinter out through the skin.
His shoulders anchor a fraction with every pass.
"Tovian."
He lifts his head.
"It's over," I say. "You came back. You're here."
His molten eyes find mine and the gold in them is slowly cooling from the savage blaze of what he was an hour ago. His jaw works. His hand rises and closes around my wrist.
"Don't let go," he says.
"I won't."
The great cavern swallows sound and returns it threefold.
I have never stood inside it when it was full.
The space felt enormous when it was empty—all twisted stone columns and cathedral ceiling and ancient murals bleeding through the dark.
Now it is alive. Thousands of bodies pack the hall from wall to wall: Ashwing warriors standing in formation at the front, Velka's human soldiers at the flanks, and the surrendered rival clans filling the back corridors in dense, bristling silence.
Every face is turned forward. Every pair of eyes is waiting.
The ancient law is simple and brutal: the territory belongs to whoever has proven themselves capable of holding it. Tharros is dead. The mountain is silent. The judgment has to come from someone.
Tovian walks beside me as we step through the parting crowd and into the open center of the cavern floor. The silence is so complete I can hear my own pulse.
I don't wait for him to speak first.
I step forward.
"My name is Sabine." My voice carries clean and sharp to the back walls.
"Gravekeeper of Blackstone Valley. I am bonded to the Alpha of the Ashwing clan and I am not ashamed of it, not before any of you, not under any ancient law that says I should be.
" I look across the gathered rival clans—faces carved from stone, expressions ranging from fury to open shock—and I don’t flinch.
"I was there when this territory was reclaimed. I bled for it. I fought for it. And I am choosing, freely and without coercion, to stand beside Tovian as the ruler of this mountain and every mountain beyond it. Challenge that if you want. But know you'll deal with me first."
Then Vorgrym, standing to my left, slams a fist to his chest.
Leif does it next, clumsily, earnestly, tears in his eyes he refuses to shed.
Velka follows without blinking.
And then the sound comes, a low, rolling percussion beginning somewhere deep in the Ashwing ranks, spreading outward like a tremor through stone.
What happens next silences the entire mountain.
Tovian steps forward, and every surviving Alpha straightens instinctively, braced for the claim. The dominant posture. The Alpha declaration. The ancient, conquering gesture that gargoyle law has demanded for centuries.
Instead, he folds his wings down and drops to one knee.
His massive frame lowers before me, with every clan in the territory watching, and he extends both hands, palms open, upturned, and lifts his head to look at me with nothing in his expression but absolute and devastating surrender.
No one breathes.
They have never seen this. I can feel it in the air—the collective paralysis of thousands of gargoyles witnessing an action their oldest laws never accounted for.
"I am yours," he says. "Not by blood debt. Not by bond. By choice."
As soon asI reach out and take both his hands, the cavern erupts in festivities.
We don't stay long enough for anyone to notice we've gone.
The moment the festivities swallow the crowd, Tovian takes my hand and we slip through a side passage, and I don't look back once.
Our private chamber is warm when we reach it. The fire has held. The furs are thick and the ceiling is high and the rest of the world is finally, mercifully, far behind us.
He crosses the room and his mouth finds mine with a groan low enough to feel through the stone floor, and every careful, political, sovereign thing I spent the last hour being dissolves completely.
We undress each other slowly and when he lays me back into the furs, I reach for him without hesitation.
There was a time—not so long ago—when the sheer size of him made me go still with instinctive, breathless apprehension.
When my body needed coaxing, when I had to consciously breathe through the initial stretch of him pressing inside me, when I thought I simply could not accommodate the full, brutal length and girth of him without falling apart.
That time is over.
My thighs fall open naturally when he settles between them. My hips tilt up to meet him. I reach down and wrap my hand around his cock—thick and heavy and already slick at the tip—and guide him to my entrance without a single tremor in my hand.
"Look at you," he murmurs against my jaw, gold eyes burning low.
"Stop talking," I say, and pull him forward.
The first inch draws a slow exhale from us both. He presses in with deliberate control, letting me feel every ridge and vein of him parting me open. I stretch around him the way I have learned to—completely, greedily, my body knowing now exactly how to soften and yield and take him in.
There is no bracing or flinching. Only the deep, full, aching pressure of him advancing until his hips meet mine and he is seated inside me to the root, his cock pressing thick and long against the deepest wall of me.
I feel him in my stomach the way I always do—that impossible, visceral fullness that should be too much but never enough.
I exhale slowly. He groans and the sound breaks whatever patience he had left.
He pulls back with a long, grinding drag that has me clutching the furs, and drives forward again, and I cry out at the ceiling.
Every stroke is a full withdrawal and a full return, the thick length of him filling me so completely on each push that I lose my breath each time and find it again only when he pulls back, only to lose it all over again.
He sets a pace that is slow and devastating, and I feel every inch of it.
I feel the broad, flared head of him pressing up against the front wall of me on the inward stroke. I feel the drag of his girth stretching me wide on the outward pull. I feel him in my lower belly like a warm, insistent pressure that builds with each thrust until my thighs are shaking
"Tovian—faster—"
He does not speed up. Instead, he goes deeper. Adjusts the angle of his hips and sinks into me on the next stroke with a roll that punches a high, broken noise from my throat and makes my toes curl uselessly against the furs.
"There," he says, voice rough.
"Yes," I gasp, “Don't stop"
He works that angle with ruthless, grinding precision until I am shaking apart beneath him, until my nails are raking lines across his obsidian shoulders and I am crying his name in fragments between ragged breaths.
Then his wings spread wide and catch the warm chamber air and he lifts us.
The furs vanish beneath me. We rise together into the dark, my legs locked around his hips, his talons gripping my waist as he holds us suspended and keeps moving.
The new angle drives him even deeper and I choke out a yelp, my fingers clawing into the hardness of his shoulders for purchase I can’t find.
He dips his head and his mouth closes hot over my breast. His tongue drags slow across my nipple before he closes his teeth around it and bites down just enough to make me squeal. He rewards it immediately with a sharp upward roll of his hips that steals what little breath I had left.
He laps at the sting. Does it again on the other, his teeth grazing and his tongue soothing the bite in the same motion, and I am shaking all over, suspended in midair with nowhere to go and no reason to want to be anywhere else.
Then I get an idea.
"Let go of me," I breathe.
His grip tightens instinctively. "Sabine—"
"Let go."
A beat of silence. His gold eyes find mine in the dark, searching, and I hold his gaze and push against his chest, and he loosens his talons from my hips.
I brace both palms flat against his chest and push myself upright.
The shift in position drives him into me at a completely new angle and we both go still and breathless for a full second, reacquainting ourselves with what that feels like.
From up here, seated fully in his lap with gravity doing merciless, unhurried work, I feel every single inch of his cock in a way that his hips against mine never quite allowed.
The broad head of him pressed flush against the deepest point of me.
The thick, throbbing length of his shaft stretching me open all the way down to the base.
"Oh," I say, brilliantly.
His wings beat once, twice to keep us perfectly suspended mid-air and then he tilts his chin up at me with his molten eyes.
"Well," he says roughly. "Go on then."
I rise up on my knees and sink back down.
Repeat the movement. Slower this time, savoring the full, obscene stretch of him entering me inch by inch, bottoming out with a grind of my hips that presses him so deep I feel the pressure behind my navel.
He is enormous and I take all of him and the knowledge sends a rush of heat through me so intense my vision blurs.
I find my rhythm.
It starts slow and deliberate, long, rolling lifts and drops, using his full length on every stroke. His wings beat in slow, steady counterpoint below us, keeping us airborne while I work myself on his cock with increasing urgency, chasing the pressure building at the base of my spine.
"Sabine." His voice is strained. His hands hover at my hips, restraining himself from taking over with what appears to be significant effort.
"Don't you dare." I say breathlessly.
He exhales through his teeth.
I roll my hips forward on the next downstroke and grind against the base of him and his whole body shudders beneath me, the wings stuttering for just a moment before he corrects. I do it again. Watching his jaw go tight. Watching the muscle in his throat work.
I brace my palms harder against his chest and ride him properly.
I chase that angle until my thighs are burning and my hips are rolling in desperate, grinding circles, and then his patience finally, completely dissolves.
His hands lock onto my hips. He drives upward to meet my downstroke and the collision of him slamming into the deepest part of me pulls a cry from my throat.
He does it again. And again. Driving up into me with those powerful, precise thrusts while I ride down to meet him, until we are moving together in frantic and graceless motion.
Then, the pleasure building inside me crests and I clench around him so tightly he snarls against my shoulder.
The orgasm tears through me in long, shuddering waves that leave me limp and breathless in his arms, still suspended in midair, still full of him, still trembling.
Tovian does not stop.
He holds me upright with his talons and works his hips through every aftershock until I am whimpering with the oversensitivity of it, until my second release builds faster than the first, smaller and sharper and somehow more devastating, and only then does he finally let go of all restraints.
His release surges deep and thick and consuming, flooding me in a hot, endless rush, filling me so completely full that I feel his warmth everywhere, every pulse and wave of it rolling through me until I am soft and wrecked and utterly undone.
We sink back into the furs in a slow, wing-wrapped descent, and he folds around me like a fortress made of stone and warmth. And I lie there with my eyes closed and my lungs trying to remember their purpose.
Eventually, I open my eyes and stare at the ceiling.
"That's it?" I say.
Tovian's hips nudge deliberately forward—still buried inside me, still thick, still devastatingly present.
The air leaves my lungs in a single helpless gasp.
"We have not even started.” His voice a dark and devastating rumble against my ear.
