Fable
I can’t outrun a lycan.
I know this. I’ve always known this, it’s basic biology, or whatever passes for biology when you’re discussing supernatural creatures that have no business existing.
He’s faster by orders of magnitude, stronger, built for the hunt in ways my soft human body could never match even if I trained for a lifetime.
But that’s not the point.
The point is the chase.
The point is the crash of underbrush beneath my feet, the scratch of bare branches against my arms, the way the moonlight silvers the snow until the whole forest looks like something out of a fever dream.
The point is the knowledge that something massive and ancient is running behind me, getting closer with every stride, and instead of being terrified…
I’m exhilarated.
A laugh tears out of me, wild and breathless and probably slightly unhinged.
My heels lasted approximately thirty seconds into the forest before I kicked them off, stupid shoes, definitely ruined, probably buried in a snowdrift somewhere behind me.
Now I’m running barefoot through the cold, and my feet should hurt, will definitely hurt later, but right now I can’t feel anything except the adrenaline singing through my veins.
The trees blur past. Ancient oaks give way to younger pines, their branches heavy with snow that glitters in the moonlight. I duck under a low-hanging limb, feel the cold brush of needles against my face, and push harder.
Behind me, closer now, definitely closer, I hear him.
The soft pad of enormous paws on frozen ground. The occasional crack of a branch giving way under his weight. He’s not trying to catch me yet. I can tell, the unhurried rhythm of his stride, the predatory patience of something that knows its prey can’t escape but wants to savor the pursuit.
“Cocky!” I yell over my shoulder.
The growl that rolls back through the trees sounds insufferably like confident. There’s a difference.
I dart around a massive oak, hoping the obstacle will slow him down.
It doesn’t help. I hear him circling, cutting off the escape route I’d been aiming for, herding me with predatory precision.
I change direction, plunging through a gap in the underbrush that looks wider than it actually is, and branches catch at my dress, tear at my hair, leave scratches on my bare arms that I’ll find tomorrow and try to explain to absolutely no one.
The path opens into a small clearing, a pocket of space where the trees fall back and the moon pours down unfiltered, turning the snow to liquid silver.
I push harder, lungs burning, heart pounding, knowing I’m almost…
He catches me.
One moment I’m running; the next, I’m being spun around, my back hitting a tree trunk hard enough to knock the breath from my lungs. He’s shifted without me noticing, human again, naked, his hands planted on either side of my head, caging me against the rough bark.
“Got you.” The words come out barely human, rough and deep and vibrating with something primal that makes my whole body clench.
“Took you long enough.” I’m breathing hard, chest heaving, but I manage to make my voice sound unimpressed. “I thought lycans were supposed to be fast.”
“I was savoring the view.” His eyes rake down my body, dress torn, hair wild, skin flushed with exertion. “You’re beautiful when you run.”
“I’m beautiful all the time.”
“True.” His mouth curves into something that’s more predator than smile. “But especially when you run. Something about the prey instinct, I think.”
“Did you just call me prey?”
“Did you not want to be caught?”
I don’t have a good answer for that.
He kisses me before I can find one, fierce and hungry, the kind of kiss that feels like a claim. His hands find the zipper at my back, drag it down with more urgency than care, and the dress pools at my feet before I can decide if I mind.
The cold hits my bare skin, but I don’t feel it. Can’t feel anything except the heat of him pressed against me, the rough bark at my back, the way his mouth moves down my throat like he’s trying to consume me.
“Here?” I manage between gasps.
“Here.” His teeth graze my pulse point. “Now.”
“What if someone…”
“No one comes to this part of the territory.” His hands grip my hips, lifting me. “It’s mine. You’re mine. This moment is mine.”
“Possessive.”
“Very.” He settles me against the tree, my legs wrapping around his waist. “Any complaints?”
“Ask me later.”
“I’ll ask you now.”
“No complaints.” I pull him closer, fingers digging into his shoulders. “Now stop talking and fuck me.”
His restraint snaps. He drives into me in one brutal stroke, seating himself to the hilt, stretching me open around his cock, and the rest of the sentence dissolves into a sound that isn’t words.
For a moment, neither of us moves.
We just hold there, pressed together, breathing hard, my body clenching around the thick, hot length of him, adjusting to the sensation of being joined.
The moonlight filters through the branches above us.
The snow glitters like scattered diamonds.
And I’m pinned against a tree by a lycan king, and I have never felt more exactly where I’m supposed to be.
“Still with me?” he manages.
“More than with you.”
“Tell me if…”
“Orion.” I tighten my legs around him. “Move.”
He does.
It’s not gentle. It’s not slow. It’s primal and desperate and exactly what I need, the aftermath of fear transformed into something fierce and claiming and ours.
His hips slam into me with a rhythm that matches my heartbeat, each thrust driving deep enough to punch the breath out of me, and I meet him stroke for stroke, nails raking down his back hard enough to leave marks he’ll wear for days.
“More,” I gasp.
“Demanding,” he growls.
“You like it.”
“I love it.” His mouth finds my throat, his hand sliding between us to work my clit in tight, merciless circles that have me clenching around him. “I love you. Now come on my cock so I can feel it.”
“That’s filthy.”
“You’re soaked around me. Don’t pretend you don’t love it.”
I can’t pretend. He drives into me over and over, that clever hand never letting up, until I can’t think, can’t breathe, can only feel.
The bark scrapes my back raw with every thrust, and I don’t care.
The cold air bites at my exposed skin, and I don’t care.
Nothing exists except him and me and this perfect, feral moment.
“Fable…” His voice cracks apart. “I’m close.”
“Me too.”
“I want…” He stops. Starts again. “I want to be inside you when…”
“Yes.”
“When I…”
“Yes.”
The word leaves me as a plea, because suddenly I know what he’s asking. What he’s been building toward. What this whole night has been leading to.
“I want the bite,” I say.
He goes still.
“Are you…”
“I’m sure.” My voice is steady even as my heart races. “I’m ready. I want to feel you… all of you. Forever.”
“This should be… we should discuss…”
“We’ve discussed. We’ve planned. You said when I asked knowing exactly what it means.” I cup his face in my hands, force him to look at me. “I’m asking. I know what it means.”
“Forever,” he says.
“Yes.”
“No taking it back.”
“I don’t want to take it back.”
His eyes are wet. Tears tracking down his face in the moonlight, this ancient powerful creature undone by a single word.
“I love you,” he whispers.
“I love you too. Now stop stalling and claim me.”
He laughs, a surprised, choked sound, and then his mouth is on my neck, his breath warm against my pulse point. I feel the scrape of teeth, the moment of hesitation, the way he’s holding himself back even now, even when I’ve told him yes, because he wants to be absolutely certain…
“Orion.”
“Yes?”
“Bite me.”
He bites.
Teeth pierce skin.
The pain is a bright, brief sting, one sharp second of it, a needle of heat at my pulse point, and then it transmutes.
Warmth detonates outward from the bite, rolling down my throat, flooding across my chest, pouring through my belly and lower, gathering everywhere at once until my entire body is a single held breath.
He drives deep and locks there, groaning against my neck as he comes, and the combination undoes me completely: his teeth in my skin, his cock pulsing inside me, something ancient and molten spilling into my blood.
I come so hard my vision whites out.
This one isn’t a wave. It’s an event. Every nerve ending fires at once, ecstasy rolling through me in long, pulling spasms that start at the bite and end at my toes and refuse to stop, wringing sounds out of me that echo off the trees.
His mouth stays sealed to my throat through all of it, holding the claim while I convulse around him, and each pull of his lips against the mark sends another spasm chasing the last, pleasure stacked on pleasure until I can’t tell where the bite ends and the orgasm begins.
They’re the same thing now. They’ll always be the same thing.
The bond snaps into place, a tether pulled taut, and everything changes.
I feel him.
Not just the physical presence, the weight of his body, the sting of the bite, the warmth of his breath, but something deeper, a claim that goes all the way down to the core of who he is.
His love hits me first. It’s vast. Ancient.
Like standing at the edge of an ocean and trying to comprehend its depth.
Three hundred years of loneliness, three hundred years of waiting, and all of it focused on me now with an intensity that should be terrifying but isn’t.
It’s warm. Safe. The kind of love that doesn’t ask anything in return because it’s already complete just by existing.
Beneath that, his fear. The small, persistent worry that this is a dream he’ll wake from.
That he’ll do something wrong. That I’ll realize what I’ve bound myself to and regret it.
The fear is old, older than I am, older than anyone I’ve ever known, and it lives in him, a shadow he can’t quite escape.
