Chapter 4 #2

I called Knox at six forty-five. Knox picked up the way Knox always picked up, which was on the second ring, calm.

Knox is our president. Knox is, more than anybody else in the Iron Thorn, my brother — not by blood, because none of us are blood, but by the longer kind of brotherhood, the kind that twenty years builds.

I told him everything Elara had told me.

I told him in five minutes flat, no editorial, the way you brief a man you trust. He listened.

He did not interrupt. When I was done he said, "Cade doesn't know. "

"Harper asked Elara not to tell him."

"Cade's gonna be hurt about that."

"Cade can be hurt about it later. Right now we keep her opening her doors on Saturday."

A pause.

"Boone," Knox said, "are you doing this as a brother of the club or are you doing this as something else."

"I am doing it as a brother of the club."

"You sure."

"Knox."

"I'm asking."

"I am asking you to help me keep a woman in this town from going under because somebody three states away got greedy and mean. That is what I am asking. The rest of it is my problem."

"Alright."

"Will you make the call."

"I will make the call. Give me an hour. Stay near your phone."

The call he made was to Hank Mosely, the club's lawyer, an old hand who had handled everything Iron Thorn had needed handled for the better part of fifteen years and who specialized in exactly the kind of fast quiet pre-emptive paperwork that this situation needed.

Hank was, by trade, terrifying in a courtroom and a sweetheart on the phone.

Knox put him together with Elara by eight a.m. By ten a.m. Hank had pulled the Tennessee filing apart, identified two procedural errors in Joelle's attorney's emergency motion, drafted a response, and filed it electronically with the court in Nashville.

By noon he had spoken to a clerk he knew in the Tennessee court system.

By two p.m. he had spoken to the judge's chambers.

By Friday at three-fifteen in the afternoon, when I was in Harper's kitchen running new caulk along the seam where the prep table met the wall, my phone buzzed in my back pocket and I pulled it out and Hank had sent me a one-line text: Emergency motion denied.

Underlying complaint dismissed without prejudice at the same time.

Joelle's attorney is going to get a phone call from his judge that he is not going to enjoy. You owe me a bottle.

I texted back: Two bottles. Thank you, Hank.

I put my phone back in my pocket.

I went back to caulking. Harper was in the front-of-house with Briar, going over the layout of the pastry case for Saturday morning, and I could hear her laughing through the pass- through, and I want to put down what I felt right then.

I felt like a man who had just put a fire out before the woman who lived in the house had smelled smoke.

I felt good in a particular way. I felt like the man my daddy had raised, the man the club had patched, the man this town called when things went sideways.

I felt useful in the deepest way I ever felt useful, which is when somebody I loved was in trouble I could help.

I felt one more thing.

I felt the small cold pop, in the middle of my chest, of having maybe just stepped over a line.

Harper had not asked me to do this.

She had asked Elara not to tell me.

She had granted Elara permission, reluctantly, under pressure.

And I had taken that reluctant permission and I had built a paper army out of it.

I had called the club president. I had called the club's lawyer.

I had gotten a Tennessee judge to dismiss a motion before Harper had even hired her own attorney.

I had done what I do, which is fix it, and I had done it without asking her how she wanted it fixed, and I was standing in her kitchen Friday afternoon caulking a counter while she laughed in the next room about a balloon arrangement and the fence I had built around her was already up.

I thought about not telling her.

I thought about it for maybe twenty minutes.

I thought about her opening her email on Saturday morning after the grand opening and finding a notice from the court that the case had been dismissed and the motion denied and just being relieved, never knowing it had been my doing, never having to look me in the face about it.

I thought about it because it would have been easier on me, and I sat with that fact, and I made myself look at it.

I had wanted, for a half second, to fix something for her and keep the fix invisible.

I had wanted credit she didn't know I had earned because the alternative was a conversation I did not know how to have.

I straightened up. I put the caulk gun on the counter. I went to find her.

She was at the front counter alone now. Briar had left.

The clock on the wall said quarter past five.

The afternoon sun was coming in the front window low and gold and the dust in the air was making little slow constellations of itself between us, and Harper looked up when I came in, and she saw something in my face, and she put her pen down.

"Boone."

"I need to tell you something."

"Okay."

I told her. I told her in about ninety seconds, plain as I could.

I told her that Elara had called me Thursday morning.

I told her I had asked. I told her I had called Knox.

I told her Hank had filed Friday morning.

I told her the motion was denied two hours ago.

I told her her accounts were safe. I told her her grand opening was happening Saturday. I told her the whole thing was over.

She did not say anything for about ten seconds.

Then she said, "You did all of that without telling me."

"I did."

"You did all of that without asking me."

"I did."

She nodded. She nodded slowly, the way a woman nods when she is sorting through several feelings at once and choosing which one she is going to lead with.

I watched her sort. I watched the color come up high in her cheeks.

I watched her hand come up off her pen and form a small fist on the counter, knuckles white. I watched her not-look-away.

"Get your truck," she said. "I want to do this at your place."

"Okay."

"Right now, Boone."

"Okay."

We drove separately. I drove the seven miles out to my farm with my hands tight on the steering wheel, and Harper followed me in the Honda Civic her parents had bought her in college that she still drove because it was paid off, and I pulled up at my farmhouse in the late golden light and she pulled up behind me and got out of her car and walked past me up onto my porch without saying a word and opened my front door — I never locked it — and walked into my kitchen.

I followed her.

She was standing in the middle of my kitchen with her arms crossed.

The afternoon sun was coming in through the western windows of the house and turning the whole room honey-colored, and the air smelled like cedar from the boards I had been planing in the workshop earlier in the week and the rosemary plant on the windowsill that my mama had grown from a cutting before she died, and Harper Kincaid stood in the middle of all of that with her arms crossed and her color high and her eyes on me and she said —

"You don't get to rescue me, Everett. I'm not a project."

"You're not a project."

"You don't get to handle me."

"I wasn't handling you. I was handling a Nashville attorney."

"For me."

"For you."

"Without asking me."

"Without asking you."

"Why."

"Because you would have said no."

"Damn right I would have said no."

"And then you would have lost your bakery."

She looked at me. She held it, just like she'd been holding it for a week. Just the way she'd held it in the doorway on Monday and at the counter on Friday with my hand on her wrist. She held my eyes in my own kitchen and she said —

"That was my call to make."

"Maybe."

" Maybe. "

"Harper. Listen to me. I am going to say something and I want you to hear it.

" I took half a step closer. I did not take a whole step.

I kept my hands at my sides. "You are the most capable person I know.

You are. I have watched you build a bakery from a vape shop in fourteen days.

I have watched you charm half the women in this town and most of the men.

I have watched you keep your mama from knowing how scared you were because you wanted to come home a success.

You don't need rescuing. I know that. I know you can handle anything that comes at you.

But Harp — capable people still deserve help.

Capable people especially deserve help. The whole problem with being the capable one is everybody assumes you don't need any.

And I am telling you, as a man who has been the capable one in his own family for thirty-six years, that the help is the part you have to let people give you, because nobody else is going to push it on you.

You have got to let them in. And I — I let myself in.

I did. I let myself in without your permission and I am sorry for that piece of it.

I am not sorry I made the call. I will never be sorry I made the call.

But I am sorry I did not ask you first, and if you tell me right now you want me to undo it, I will call Hank and we will refile and start over and you can run it your way. "

She did not say anything for a long minute.

I want to put down what I felt right then.

I felt thirty-six years old. I felt every one of those years.

I felt the line I had been holding for six of them, the line I had drawn at a kitchen table after a barbecue, and I felt the line shaking under the weight of standing in my own kitchen alone with her with the western light on her face and the smell of rosemary on the windowsill and a confession of fixing-it just out of my mouth.

She uncrossed her arms.

She said, very quietly, "Why do you always do this."

"Do what."

"Show up. Fix things. Then step back like you don't care."

I did not say anything.

She said, "Cade. That's why. Isn't it."

She did not say it like a question. She said it the way she had handed me a plate of brisket six years ago — soft and direct and unanswerable.

I held her eyes.

I did not lie. I had not lied to her yet. I had been many things to her, in the last week and in the six years before it, but I had not, to her face, lied. I was not going to start.

I said nothing.

She nodded. She looked at me a second longer.

Then she walked past me, out of the kitchen, across the porch, down the steps, got in her Honda Civic and drove away.

I stood in the kitchen and watched her taillights through the front window as she went down my driveway.

I leaned my hands flat on the counter the way I'd watched her lean her hands flat on her own counter on Friday afternoon. I let my head hang.

I exhaled.

I exhaled six years. I exhaled the porch and the brisket and the bee and the screen door and the gray morning at the table.

I exhaled the line. I leaned in my own kitchen with the western sun going red on the windowsill and the rosemary smelling sweet and the dust hanging in the air, and I exhaled the line, and when I straightened back up I knew, with a clean small terrified clarity, that the line was not going to hold.

The grand opening was tomorrow.

She was going to be in her bakery at five a.m. tomorrow morning, and she was going to be radiant and exhausted, and the whole town was going to come through her door, and somewhere in the middle of all of it, she was going to look at me across the room, and I was going to have to decide what to do with my face.

I sat down at my kitchen table.

I put my head in my hands.

I sat there till it got dark, and then I sat there a while longer in the dark, and around eleven I got up and went to bed, and I did not sleep, and I lay there in the dark on top of the quilt my grandmother had made me and I listened to the cicadas outside the window and I thought, very clearly —

She knows.

She has known for six years.

She knows.
