CHAPTER NINE
KYLA
Perfectly content. I am perfectly content at this moment.
I’m washing the breakfast dishes as Cohen and Laney happily chatter behind me at the kitchen table.
“What kind of boots do you want? We’ll go to town and buy you some today,” Cohen states.
Laney replies, “Pink. I want pink.”
Last night was extraordinary, but waking up in Cohen’s arms this morning was pure bliss. I love that when he is with us, he is present. He’s dialed in. There’s no checking his phone or hiding as he types out replies to whichever woman is his current favorite.
I forgot what it feels like to be wanted, and that makes me sad. I guess I will have to call John today and face the music. I still have to figure some things out but…
Before I can finish the thought, the sound of gravel under tires catches my attention.
“Were you expecting someone?” Cohen asks, looking confused as he stares out the window.
“No,” I reply, watching the car come down the long driveway as my thoughts race and then my brows furrow. This car looks familiar. It looks like the same sedan that drove by us the other day when our truck was broken down on the side of the road.
It couldn’t be, but if Cohen doesn’t recognize it…
A man I’ve never seen before opens the driver’s side door and walks to the back passenger side. He opens it, and when John gets out of the car, I’m speechless.
He’s found us, just when I felt like this little slice of Roman Mountain could’ve been ours.
