16. Harper #4

When I move my hips, instinct and my need to come take over as the first waves of pleasure start to build.

While he watches me, I prove that what I said is true.

I can’t get enough of him, and I let him see that.

I let him feel it as I drag my nails down his skin and ride him with an abandon that I’ve never felt with anyone else.

I let him see me at my most vulnerable, and I don’t hide anything from him.

Unashamed, I relish every second of my first orgasm, and then keep going because one is not going to be enough tonight.

By the time my body finally stills, we’re both covered in sweat and my muscles are shaky. Gasping for air, I slump against him with my face nestled against his neck and his arms wrapped tightly around me.

“I’m sorry you’ve been so stressed,” I tell him. “I know this isn’t easy for you with your cousin being in jail and everyone expecting you to fix it.”

“I have to fix it,” he says. “Sasha isn’t going to last much longer.”

“He’ll have to, though, won’t he? I mean, if he does get convicted and you have to appeal, it could be years.”

I feel his body stiffen at the thought before he says, “That won’t happen. It’s not going to trial, and he’s not going to prison.”

“Ev, you have to realize there’s a very real chance that he will. Even if DeMarco’s men did this, it’s still pointing to Sasha. If it goes to trial and the jury convicts him, there’s nothing you can do.”

“There’s always something you can do,” he says, and the weight of his words hangs heavy around us. He hasn’t released his tight grip on me, and he’s still semi-hard inside me, but it feels like he’s further away, and I don’t like it.

Sitting up, I cup his face and force him to look at me. “What are you saying?”

“I’m not saying anything.”

“Yes, you are.” I think about what he’s said, about his insistence that his cousin is not going to stay in jail and the immense pressure he’s been feeling to fix everything, and it suddenly all makes sense.

This isn’t just about making sure Sasha doesn’t get convicted.

This is about fixing things before there’s a bloodbath trying to break him out.

My mind immediately jumps to Devin and the other officers I’ve become close to, the ones who joke around with me and tolerate my endless questions even if they do refuse to answer most of them.

They’re good men, and they don’t deserve what’s about to happen.

“Your family can’t do this,” I say, not even bothering to ask him if I’m right. I know I am, and I see the truth of it in the pair of eyes that can no longer meet mine.

“I never said my family was doing anything, Harper.”

“No, but they will, won’t they? If they think Sasha’s going to be convicted, they’re going to try and break him out, aren’t they? People will die, Ev. Good people who don’t deserve that.”

The conversation makes him grow soft inside me, but he makes no move to push me aside and get up. If anything, he tightens his grip, digging his fingers just a touch harder into my flesh.

“I’ve told you before that whatever view you have of my family, it’s wrong. We don’t just go around killing innocent people, but we will do whatever it takes to protect our family.”

“You realize those two things contradict each other, right?” I ask.

“I’m not asking you to understand it. I’m just asking you to trust me when I say my family isn’t going to gun down the entire police force to get Sasha out.”

“Just a few of them?” I can’t help but ask.

The smile he gives me holds no trace of the earlier sweetness. “Worried about your precious Devin?”

“Should I be?”

“Not from my family, no,” he says, digging his fingers in harder as he pulls me closer.

“But I very much want to kill the bastard because right now he’s walking around, alive and breathing, carrying around the knowledge of what it feels like to be inside you.

I can’t tell you how angry that makes me. ”

Stunned by the possessive jealousy in his voice, it takes me a second to answer, but when I do, I add in a soft pat to his chest because I know it’ll annoy him.

“Relax. I doubt he even remembers it. He’s very happily married.

Neither one of us is carrying around any lingering romantic feelings.

Besides, why do you care, Ev? You’re the one who keeps saying we’re an impossibility. ”

“You know it’s the truth, but that doesn’t change the way I feel.” Leaning in, he presses a soft kiss to my shoulder. “And it doesn’t stop me from wanting to kill every man who’s ever been with you.”

“Well, I’m not crazy about the women you’ve been with, if that makes you feel any better.”

I feel the soft huff of air he gives before he says, “No, that doesn’t make me feel better.”

“That’s a double standard.”

“No, Harper, it’s just the truth.”

Before I can argue with him, he picks me up and starts to carry me from the room.

“Come on, let’s soak in the giant tub I’ve never used, and then you’re sleeping in bed with me because I can’t take another night with you in the guest room.”

I give in, putting our discussion on hold in favor of a bubble bath and a night in Ev’s bed.
