CHAPTER 59
He didn’t like that. The way she ignored him tempted him to pull her close.
Her leaned eyes and red rims bothered him to the point he was seething with rage.
The act she was putting on, the facade and the mask she wore to hide her true emotions were gnawing at him.
His eyes slowly moved down her trembling body, taking in the sight of her disheveled dirty clothes.
His jaw clenched. But he reminded himself.
This was not the time. He knew she needed explanations, and he’d give her, but now was not the time. He couldn’t risk her life. This game included blood, and he’d die thousands of deaths just to make sure she lived.
Kaelith hid his emotions behind his cold expressions. The muscle in his jaw twitched and he resisted the urge to snap Anna’s fingers as she seductively ran them down his thigh. He grabbed her hand before she could move it low and squeezed it tight as a warning. “Don’t.”
Her touch disgusted him. It was taking everything in him to pull out his gun and shoot her.
Anna glanced at him and gave him a sly smile leaning into him. “Don’t provoke me, Kaelith. I know what is going on between you two.”
Kaelith met her gaze and tilted his head in a way his lips brushed across Anna’s ear. “You touch her, I’ll skin you alive and make a carpet of your skin for her to walk on. So, it’s you who needs to be careful.”
He whispered cautiously not letting Amara hear him. Scaring her was the last thing he wanted to do at that moment.
Anna’s face paled as she swallowed and she withdrew her hand before fixing her hair.
Amara couldn’t hear what they were saying, but from where she sat, she could see the distance between them reducing and that bothered her to the limit of losing her senses.
By now the alcohol had taken a toll on her.
her jaw clenched and eyes fiery. She hated feeling this way.
The volatile emotions surged deep and raw, so fiercely it made her bite on her inner cheek drawing out blood.
She felt like a dangerous woman, something about this made her want to do things she shouldn’t.
She could feel the metallic taste of blood and jealousy in her mouth as she quickly gulped down the remaining liquor and slammed her glass down on the table gathering both of their attentions.
“More.” She muttered bitterly. Kaelith could see indifference and raw emotions in her eyes. He could tell she was hella drunk. Her eyes were losing their consciousness and her sanity was replaced with intoxication.
“We are leaving,” Kaelith warned her with his eyes. Amara glared at him and then looked at Anna with a smile.
“No! I want to drink more.” Amara whined grabbing the bottle.
Kaelith’s jaw ticked. “Amara.”
His voice was dangerously low.
“That’s enough.” Suddenly Anna’s phone rang. She looked at the screen and her face tensed. She hid the screen with her hand and stood up.
“Excuse me, I’ll take this call.” She pressed the phone to her ear. “Hello?” Just as she disappeared to the balcony, Kaelith shot up, reaching for Amara. Just as he grabbed her wrist, she slapped his hand away.
“Don’t touch me!” she snapped. “You’re a liar!”
Kaelith took a deep breath, slowly starting to lose his control.
“Come here.” He commanded. She scoffed, tears dancing in her beautiful orbs. When she did not move, he rounded the table. Amara’s eyes widened as she looked around.
“Stay where you are. Or…or... I’ll scream.”
Kaelith did not pay any heed to her words and grabbed her wrist before pulling her up to his chest. Cupping her cheek, he made her look into his eyes.
“Do it. Do you think they can stop me from getting to you? I told you, and I’ll repeat it, I am your beginning and end, baby, there’s no in-between, nothing that can stop me from having you. ”
Nothing can stop me from having you.
She gritted her teeth and tried to move past him but he was swift and moulded her into his arms. “You still dare to say such things? You have a fiancé… you... you’re engaged. Oh god, how can I be so stupid... I thought … I thought…”
Tears streamed down her cheeks. There was an accusatory gleam in her eyes.
She wanted to ask him for an answer, wanted him to assure her that this was a fib, but she knew she had no right.
He was no one to her, and she was no one to him.
Just a poor girl he took pity upon. No path led her to him, and there was no destination.
She’ d keep going round and round in circles.
Tears welled up in her eyes, a mixture of pain and suffocation.
Kaelith held her tighter, his grip was both firm yet strangely comforting. "Listen to me," he said, his voice softening slightly despite the tension. "Yes, I have a fiancée, but it's not what you think. You have to trust me, even if it's difficult right now."
She shook her head, disbelief and anguish clouding her features as she scoffed. "Trust you? How can I trust someone who's been lying to me? Who's been hiding things from me?"
His expression softened as he wiped away a tear from her cheek with his thumb. "I know I haven't been entirely honest with you, but there are reasons, reasons I can't explain right now. Just know that I would never intentionally hurt you."
What reasons meant more than the broken shards of the heart? But it didn’t matter anymore. Her gaze flickered between his eyes, searching for any hint of deceit, and when she saw nothing but the specks of blue in his grey eyes. "Then why? Why all the secrets? Why all the games?" Her voice quivered.
He sighed heavily, his emotions mounting. "Because there are dangers, Amara. Dangers that involve you, that threaten you. I'm trying to protect you, even if it means keeping you in the dark for now."
Her shoulders slumped as the weight of his words sunk in. "Protect me from what?"
He shook his head. “I cannot tell you.”
Amara snapped and narrowed her gaze. Ambers burn in his mocha eyes, the air stirred her insides. There was a long pause, and then she muttered. “Then don’t touch me, if you can’t give me your truth, don’t expect my heart in return.”
