CHAPTER 80
"Fuck, Amara! Don't die on me!" Kaelith’s s fear was palpable as he carried her inside the car, his growl echoing in the tense atmosphere. The urgency in the air increased when Lorcan swiftly followed suit, his actions mirroring the sound of distant gunshots that pierced through the day.
"Kaelith... Kaelith..." Kaelith clenched his fists as she muttered through her mouth drawing in deep breaths. Her hand limply slipped through his fingers.
Lorcan wasted no time in sliding into the passenger side, his eyes scanning the surroundings for any threats. With a surge of adrenaline, he pressed his foot on the accelerator, causing the engine to roar to life, matching the intensity of their situation.
He felt a rush of adrenaline. It was too intense and too overwhelming as he felt sweat trickling down his back.
"Drive fast!" Kaelith muttered as a few cars followed them. Lorcan cursed in Italian and pulled the windows down.
Kaelith’s concerned gaze fixated on Amara’s complexion, which appeared remarkably pale, while her body lay unmoving, seemingly devoid of any life.
Carefully he cradled her in his lap, ensuring her head was safely supported by his hand.
His other hand applied pressure firmly, exerting all his strength on the bullet wound inflicted on her abdomen.
“Don’t die, please, please, please.” He pleaded. He swallowed hard. His ears rang loudly and his heart pounded loudly.
The deafening sound of the gunshot seemed to echo through the narrow streets, causing a brief moment of chaos and panic. Lorcan ’ s frustration only grew stronger as he pushed the car's engine to its limits in a desperate attempt to outpace it.
Swerving through the traffic he deft maneuvering allowed them to gain a slight advantage over the relentless car following in their wake.
"Call the doctor—" Lorcan shouted as Kaelith quickly fished out his phone with shaking fingers.
Kaelith called out sprinting down the hallway to the hospital. The doctors quickly followed behind him.
The nurse quickly attached an oxygen mask to her and a heart monitor.
"Check her blood pressure. Rosa, give me five blades! Tina, sterilize the wound!" The doctor quickly put on the mask and his coat as Rosa handed him the blade.
"Her oxygen level is dropping!" Nurse cursed.
Kaelith felt his breath hitching as he choked on the surging fear and anxiousness. Everything was blurred and he couldn't hear anything. Expect the constant ringing and the loud voice of the firing of a bullet.
‘Kaelith...' he gritted his teeth. Even at the death bed she still thought about him.
A tsunami of emotions crashed into his being, causing his whole world to crumble like ancient ruins. The solid ground beneath his feet, betrayed him, shifting like loose sand in a volatile desert storm.
Each breath he took encompassed a flurry of overwhelming sensations, as if a whirlwind of conflicting emotions were vying for dominance within his chest. His quivering lips parted, releasing a tremulous breath that hung in the air, mirroring the fragile state of her.
His body succumbed to the unbearable weight of despair, forcing him to collapse onto his knees, akin to a marionette with severed strings.
The weight of the world, or rather, the weight of his shattered reality, bore down on his trembling form, threatening to crush him entirely.
"Amara, baby..."
Lorcan concerned quickly sprang into action to lend a helping hand to his fallen friend.
Lorcan was taken aback by this sight. The sight of him—usually composed and strong-willed—on his knees struck a painful chord within her. A wave of heartache washed over him, and his gaze towards him became heartbreakingly intense.
Kaelith couldn't feel his hands anymore.
His chest tightened as his hand shook. His pale face lowered to look at the floor.
He failed. He failed to protect her once more.
The smile on her face he wanted to see, the warmth of her aura surrounding him, the feeling of her being near her was all gone now.
The buzz of emotions had hit him such he felt lost with nowhere to go.
He tried to let go, but he couldn't. The promises he made her when he found her battling for life a year ago, he felt himself in the same situation.
But this time, it was more than saving him. It was saving himself along with her.
Not only she was struggling to live, but he knew he'd die if anything happened to her. Damn! He'd even sacrifice his life if it meant saving her. He wanted to live by her name and die in her name.
Even silences have voices, and he so badly wanted to fill them with her laughter. Kaelith chuckled and Lorcan looked shocked at him.
So this was vulnerability. So this was how she felt. This was how it felt to feel dying alive.
Another chuckle left his mouth along with a single lone tear from his eyes as he looked up as if he was begging god.
