Bound Through Betrayal (The Severato Syndicate #2)

1. Caterina

Caterina

The imported French lace scratches against my collarbone, it is so abrasive and they feel like invisible chains currently binding me to a fucking monster.

I stand in the center of the cathedral’s opulent bridal suite, staring at my reflection in the gilded floor-to-ceiling mirror, though the woman staring back feels like a complete stranger.

The gown is a masterpiece of European craftsmanship, boasting layers of immaculate ivory silk and thousands of hand-sewn pearls cascading down the sweeping train, masquerading as a symbol of romantic unity while serving as a glamorous straitjacket.

My raven hair is pinned up in an intricate, flawless arrangement, secured by diamond combs that pull uncomfortably at my scalp, aiding the migraine throbbing behind my temples.

The corset beneath the silk is laced tight enough to restrict my lung capacity, a suffocating pressure that perfectly mimics the reality of my new life.

Every breath I take requires a conscious, strenuous effort, the dense layers of fabric dragging across the polished marble floor like an anchor chained to my ankles.

The seamstresses who fitted me hours ago practically trembled in fear, pinning and tucking the fabric with frantic, panicked motions, terrified that a single misplaced stitch would incur the wrath of the Severato family.

I watched them work with detached apathy, my mind miles away from the tulle and the meaningless pageantry of a wedding I never asked for.

Less than two months ago, my existence was an untouchable fortress, secured by the formidable reputation of the Falco name and the vast resources my family commanded across the eastern seaboard.

I was raised to be a queen in my own right, educated in the nuances of syndicate politics, and prepared to rule alongside a partner of my own choosing.

That future was violently annihilated the night Niccolò Severato breached our compound, marched into my father’s private study, and executed him without a fraction of hesitation.

The horrific memory plays behind my eyelids whenever I blink, the metallic stench of copper mixing with the scent of spilled whiskey, the sight of my father's blood soaking into the imported Turkish rug etching themselves into my brain.

Don Falco ruled the Boston underworld with an uncompromising fist, commanding respect and instilling terror, yet he was reduced to a lifeless corpse in a matter of seconds, his sprawling empire incinerated by a rival faction too arrogant to honor the old treaties.

The traditionalists, men who swore blood oaths to my family and kissed my father's ring, surrendered their weapons the moment Niccolò declared victory, handing over our shipping ports, our offshore accounts, and our generational dignity simply to save their own pathetic skins.

The massive oak door to the bridal suite creaks inward on iron hinges, snapping my focus away from the haunted reflection in the glass.

Enzo, the pragmatic and chilling Consigliere of the Severato syndicate, steps over the threshold wearing an immaculate charcoal suit, his icy blue eyes assessing the room with mechanical precision.

He dismisses the two trembling seamstresses with a sharp flick of his wrist, waiting until the women scurry out into the corridor before turning his unnerving gaze onto me.

Enzo is the calculating architect of my current nightmare, the man who mathematically deduced that forcing me into a marriage bed with his wildest enforcer was the most efficient method to absorb the remaining Falco loyalists without igniting a costly splinter war.

"The cathedral is at maximum capacity, Caterina," Enzo informs me. "Don Niccolò expects this transition of power to proceed flawlessly, without any theatrical outbursts from the bride."

"You can dress a hostage in a hundred-thousand-dollar couture gown and fill a church with white roses, Enzo, but it changes nothing about the reality of this slaughter," I reply, keeping my spine rigidly straight as I turn to face him.

"This is not a wedding, it is a hostile takeover, and you can tell your Don that I will walk down that aisle when I am fucking ready. "

Enzo does not react to the swearing, nor does he flinch at the venom dripping from my words. He merely adjusts the silver cufflink on his left wrist, closing the distance between us until he stands mere inches from the cascading edge of my train.

"Your father orchestrated a suicide strike on Niccolò's home, aiming a weapon at a pregnant woman, and he paid the ultimate price for his catastrophic miscalculation," Enzo states rationally, presenting the facts with a maddening calmness.

"You are alive right now because Alessio volunteered to take you as his bride, binding your fragmented legacy to our crown.

You would do well to remember that your survival is a courtesy, Caterina, not a right. "

"A courtesy," I scoff, a bitter, breathless laugh escaping my throat. "Handing me over to a feral, bloodthirsty attack dog is not a courtesy, it is a life sentence."

"Alessio is waiting at the altar," Enzo finishes, gesturing toward the open doorway with an extended hand. "Do not keep the Underboss waiting."

I brush past the Consigliere, the sweeping train of my gown dragging across the ancient stone floor.

I step out of the bridal suite and into the cavernous narthex of the cathedral, where a squad of armed Severato soldiers stand guard, their tailored jackets bulging slightly to conceal the weaponry they carry into a sacred house of worship.

The massive, intricately carved wooden doors leading into the main sanctuary loom ahead of me, functioning as the threshold to my new, inescapable prison.

The suffocating aroma of burning frankincense and thousands of imported white lilies attacks my senses, a cloying, overwhelmingly sweet perfume designed to mask the stench of the extortion and murder orchestrating this event.

As the guards push the dense wooden doors open, the majestic, resonant chords of the pipe organ swell through the cathedral, vibrating through the soles of my satin shoes and echoing off the stained-glass windows.

I step into the blinding light of the sanctuary, my chin tilted at a defiant angle, refusing to offer the assembled crowd a single ounce of the terror churning violently in my stomach.

The pews are packed with the most dangerous individuals on the eastern seaboard, a sprawling sea of mob bosses, corrupt politicians, and rival faction leaders who came to witness the final, humiliating subjugation of the Falco bloodline.

I feel their predatory eyes tracking my every movement, searching for a tremor in my hands or a tear streaking my makeup, eager to see the fallen mafia princess break under the immense pressure of her defeat.

I do not give them the satisfaction. I lock my knees, forcing my legs to move with a measured, regal grace, treating the extravagant, floral-draped aisle like a funeral march for my own independence.

I scan the sea of faces lining the pews, searching for the men who used to dine at my father's table.

I spot older men, veterans of the Falco syndicate, men who taught me how to shoot my first pistol and promised to protect our borders against invaders.

Now, they sit with their heads slightly bowed, avoiding my gaze completely, their tailored suits unable to hide the pungent stench of their cowardice.

They traded their loyalty for a peace treaty, accepting the Severato monopoly to avoid a war they knew they would lose.

They sold me to the enemy to secure their own comfortable lives, turning a blind eye to my forced sacrifice.

I am wholly alone in this cathedral, a solitary soldier marching into enemy territory without a single ally.

As I pass the first row, my eyes lock onto the orchestrator of my misery.

Niccolò Severato sits in the seat of honor, projecting an aura of terrifying, unshakeable authority.

He wears a bespoke suit, his posture relaxed but ever-vigilant, analyzing the room with the precise, calculating gaze of a predator surveying its domain.

Beside him sits Livia, the newly crowned Queen of the syndicate.

I observe her with a bitter, complicated resentment.

A few months ago, she was nothing more than a civilian, a maid scrubbing floors, and now she commands the loyalty of the most lethal men in the city, her pregnant belly a prominent testament to her secured position.

She watches me walk down the aisle, her brown eyes devoid of the mocking cruelty the other Capos display, offering instead an assessing gaze that makes me profoundly uncomfortable.

I refuse to acknowledge any potential sympathy from the woman married to my father’s murderer, snapping my attention back to the altar, burying the confusing interaction beneath a fresh wave of blinding fury.

My gaze shifts from the crowd to the front of the altar, locking onto the towering, imposing figure waiting for me beneath the ornate gold crucifix.

Alessio Severato wears a custom-tailored black tuxedo that stretches across his broad, muscular shoulders, presenting the polished facade of a gentleman while failing completely to camouflage the ruthless predator lurking underneath.

He stands with his feet planted firmly apart, his hands clasped casually behind his back, watching my approach with a dangerous, calculating intensity that makes the oxygen evaporate from my lungs.

Unlike his older brother Niccolò, who operates with a chilling, disciplined calculation, Alessio is a creature of chaotic, unfiltered violence, a man notorious for gutting his enemies with a smile on his face.

As I reach the end of the aisle, the priest gestures for me to step up onto the marble platform, speaking in a soft, reverent tone that feels ridiculously out of place in a room filled with murderers.

Alessio does not wait for a formal introduction or a polite handoff.

He closes the final few feet between us, reaching out to grasp my hand with a bruising, unforgiving grip that crushes my knuckles together.

"You look like a vision, Caterina," Alessio murmurs, his thumb stroking aggressively over the delicate skin of my wrist. "A beautiful, furious little viper wrapped up in expensive lace."

"Touch me again, and I will find a way to sever your fingers while you sleep," I whisper back, maintaining a serene, plastic smile for the audience while delivering the threat through gritted teeth.

Alessio chuckles, he is unbothered by my hostility. "I love it when you show your fangs, sweetheart. It is going to make taming you so much more entertaining."

The priest initiates the ceremony, reciting the traditional Latin prayers and speaking eloquently about the sanctity of marriage, duty, and eternal devotion, the sacred words ringing hollow and absurd.

I stare blankly at the priest's vestments, ignoring the holy scripture, focusing all of my energy on ignoring the searing heat radiating from the man standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me. Alessio stands too close, his massive frame purposefully crowding my personal space, forcing me to inhale his intoxicating scent of bergamot, expensive scotch, and gunpowder. Every time the priest pauses, Alessio’s grip tightens on my hand, a silent, persistent communication of the immense power he now holds over my existence.

He is a conqueror surveying his newly acquired territory, soaking in the victory, while I am the grand prize bound and delivered to his feet.

The ceremony drags on, an excruciating performance of political theater, until the priest finally asks for the rings.

Enzo steps forward, producing a small velvet box from his jacket pocket and handing it to the Underboss.

Alessio flips the lid open with a flick of his thumb, retrieving a band of solid platinum encrusted with a circle of flawless diamonds.

The jewelry is blinding, a lavish, obscene display of the vast Severato wealth, designed to chain me to his family name with an unbreakable metal shackle.

He releases my bruised knuckles, shifting his grip to slide his large hand around the nape of my neck, his fingers tangling roughly in the intricate pins securing my hair.

The sudden, possessive touch sends a violent jolt of electricity shooting down my spine, freezing my muscles in place.

He pulls me forward, forcing me to tilt my head up, his midnight eyes completely swallowing my vision.

Alessio slides the cold platinum ring onto my finger, pushing the metal flush against my skin with a final, definitive thrust, sealing the hostile takeover in front of the entire Boston underworld. The congregation remains completely silent, watching the Enforcer claim his spoils.

Instead of offering a traditional kiss to conclude the ceremony, Alessio dips his head, his mouth brushing agonizingly close to the sensitive skin just beneath my ear.

The rough stubble lining his jaw grazes my cheek, sending an involuntary shiver wrecking through my carefully constructed composure.

"You can glare at my men and play the defiant martyr all you want, wife," Alessio whispers, his breath hot against my neck, his tone dropping into a filthy, degrading promise that makes my stomach completely drop out.

"But when we get behind closed doors tonight, I am going to strip this expensive dress off your body, bend you over the mattress, and fuck that ridiculous attitude right out of your system.

I will break your stubborn pride before the week is over, Caterina, and by the time I am done with you, you will be begging me on your knees for permission to speak. "

The sheer vulgarity of his promise, delivered inside a sacred cathedral, strips the air from my lungs, leaving me breathless and burning with a chaotic mixture of homicidal rage and treacherous, unwanted heat.

I force myself to swallow the bile rising in my throat, refusing to let him see the impact of his filthy words.

My father’s empire may be reduced to ash, and my physical freedom may be restricted to whatever cage this arrogant bastard decides to put me in, but my mind remains my own.

I am a Falco, bred from a bloodline that survived decades of ruthless turf wars and FBI indictments, and I will not be broken by a man who uses intimidation as foreplay.

As the priest pronounces us husband and wife, offering his useless blessing to a union forged in extortion, I turn my head just enough to meet Alessio’s pitch-black gaze.

I offer him a chilling, razor-sharp smile that contradicts the submissive role he expects me to play, mentally preparing myself for the violent, psychological battlefield awaiting us tonight.
