Chapter Thirty The Whole Truth
They left the dinner early, Dante's hand a rigid, silent presence at the small of her back, and he said nothing at all until they were behind the locked doors of his study, the rest of the house dark and sleeping around them.
"Tell me about Isabel," Elena said quietly, before he could find some way to deflect it again. "The real story. Not the version you gave me before. I think Salvatore just told me it's connected to whatever this has become, and I refuse to keep fighting a threat you won't let me fully see."
Dante was silent for a long moment, staring into the cold fireplace, his jaw working. When he finally spoke, his voice had none of its usual command in it at all.
"Isabel wasn't only my cousin Nico's fiancée," he said. "She was Salvatore's daughter."
Elena's breath caught. "What?"
"Salvatore Calvetti's only child. He never publicly claimed her — she was born to a mistress, kept quiet for years to protect his marriage — but he loved her, in whatever twisted way a man like him is capable of loving anyone.
When the Calvettis took her to force Nico's hand, six years ago, it wasn't purely business.
Salvatore let it happen. He let his own men take his own daughter to make a point, because the alternative was admitting to the rest of his family that he had a daughter at all, born outside his marriage, who mattered enough to protect.
" Dante's hands had curled into fists at his sides.
"She was never the same after that week.
And Salvatore has spent six years telling himself it was my family's fault, my father's fault, my fault — anything except admitting that he sacrificed her himself, to protect his own reputation. "
"He blames you."
"He blames all of us. And I think," Dante said slowly, "that watching me marry you — watching me actually fall for a woman I was supposed to simply use as collateral — has reopened something in him that never properly healed.
I think he sees an opportunity to make me understand exactly what it costs to love someone in this world.
The way he never let himself protect Isabel, out of cowardice.
He wants to prove I'll fail you too, when it matters. "
"That's insane."
"That's grief, wearing the mask of revenge.
" Dante finally turned to look at her, and the fear in his eyes was no longer hidden at all.
"I should have told you the whole truth the day of the gala.
I let my own guilt about my family's part in Isabel's story keep me from giving you what you needed to actually protect yourself.
That was a failure, Elena, and I am sorry for it. "
Elena crossed the room and took his face in her hands, feeling him tremble, just slightly, beneath her palms. "Then don't do it again," she said, gentle but unyielding. "Whatever comes next — I need the whole truth. Every time. I can't fight what I can't see."
"I know." He pressed his forehead to hers, breathing unsteady. "I know, and I promise you, from this moment forward — no more half-truths. Even the ones that frighten me to say out loud."
