Dominic

I didn’t expect to see Teagan at the country club. My thought was I’d come in, play a few sets, no harm, no foul. But as I walked down to the courts, my eyes caught sight of a backside I’m very familiar with. I told myself it couldn’t be. As far as I know, she’d never picked up a racket since her career ended. So imagine my surprise when I discovered I was right. She is on the court. My first inclination is to turn and leave, but I’ve never been one to avoid a fight and I’m not about to start now.

As I suspected, Teagan isn’t happy to see me, but she also can’t resist bantering with me. We always had a friendly competition between us and now is no different. Actually, I would say it’s heightened because she sees me as an enemy not a lover.

“Let’s get it started,” she says, and directs the ball my way.

Her serve is solid, but I easily send the ball in her direction. We continue a steady pace of back and forth until I win and it’s the start of a new game. When it’s finally my serve, she’s unable to run it down.

“Damn!” I hear her mutter. “Again.”

I like it when she orders me around, but only on the court. When we were in bed, she wanted me to take charge because she was new to lovemaking. I enjoyed learning ways to please her, and she had no guile or shame in allowing my discovery. The way her mouth fell open on gasps as she reached her peak, or the way her muscles gripped me, quivering as I pounded into her… And the way she moaned, sighed and screamed my name when I feasted on her… Her responses were heady.

“Earth to Dominic!” I hear Teagan say, and blink to remember we’re still on the court and not back in a hotel room after one of our competitive matches.

“Sorry.” I lift my racket and slam the ball across the net.

This time, Teagan reacts quickly and manages to clip the ball, volleying it back to my side, but I’m right there waiting because I’m faster on my feet. I swing my racket and hit it square on. Teagan rallies, running toward the ball, but she’s too late and it hits the court.

“Dammit!” she yells in frustration.

“Easy, Tee.”

“Don’t call me that!”

“You used to like it.”

Her eyes narrow into thin slits. “That was before you ripped my heart out and left it for the vultures to eat.”

Shit. I don’t like being on the receiving end of her well-targeted barb. I was enjoying the game and for a moment forgot the past.

“That’s not fair, Teagan,” I respond, using her given name. “You act as if what happened between us is all my fault. You played a role in our demise too.”

“You’re blaming me? I was bedridden, watching the career I loved bleed out like a loose tourniquet while you stood by and let it happen. You didn’t fight for me.”

Fury roils through me, and I reach for my Nike bag, tossing my racket inside. “We’re not getting anywhere. I’m leaving.” I turn on my heel, but Teagan races in front of me, blocking my path.

She might be five foot nine, but I tower several inches over her. She folds her arms across her bosom and I watch her breathe heavily. “Of course you would run. That’s what you do best. Leave when the going gets tough. You know what that makes you—”

I don’t let her get another word and lower myself until we’re eye to eye. “You’d do well not to poke the tiger, Tee.” I purposely use her nickname to vex her. “I bite, and if I recall, you couldn’t get enough of my love nips.”

Her eyes grow wide, and I see the moment she remembers being in my bed, unabashedly naked. It was the first time we’d stayed in bed all day because neither one of us had matches. I nipped at her dark brown nipples and took love bites out of her deliciously round ass. There was no place I didn’t explore and she let me have my way.

She steps aside and I chuckle. “Chicken,” I whisper in her ear, and then walk away.

I don’t bother looking behind me because I want her to remember how completely obsessed we were with each other, about each other . She was a fire in my blood.

Has she always been there just waiting to be reignited?
