Chapter 24

YASMINE

A Few Days Later

Having been stuck in meetings all day, I excitedly open the Wildcard app and message Flyguy, whom I’ve spoken to every day. Sometimes for hours.

There’s no sleazy dick pics or show-me-your-tits texts.

For the first time, I look forward to the conversations we have.

And that’s rare for a dating app. I knew creating it was right.

I can feel it in my bones that I am onto something.

Flyguy and I are building a connection that goes way beyond appearance.

It’s the closest I’ve ever felt to someone without ever meeting them.

I was concerned that my unconventional idea might not work, but it does, and the app is becoming more popular every day.

The conversations we have are often deep, about the world, injustices we notice, and politics, too.

But there’s a lightness and carefree ease to them, and we share our days in roundabout ways because, until today, we haven’t been able to share our occupations.

It doesn’t matter that I own the app; I’m a stickler for following the rules to ensure it works exactly as I planned.

I’m desperate to find out what Flyguy does for a living.

He’s given me so many clues, and still I can’t figure it out, even though I’m usually really good at cryptic clues.

CodeBreaker

We won the contract today. Go me!

I don’t have to wait long for him to message me back.

Flyguy

Knew you would. Clever girl.

CodeBreaker

We’ve been given the green light to share what jobs we have, so tell me, what does that smart brain of yours do all day?

Flyguy

I’m a lawyer.

CodeBreaker

No way… I never would have worked that out in a million years.

Flyguy

I sort wills, estates, trust funds… I help people navigate life after life; do you get it now?

CodeBreaker

That was so obvious. I can’t believe I didn’t figure that out.

Flyguy

Okay, your turn.

CodeBreaker

I’m a project manager for a tech company.

Flyguy

Really?

CodeBreaker

Yup… and a freaking great one. I manage a team of forty.

Flyguy

What does the company you work for do?

CodeBreaker

Cloud migration, custom software development, computer games plus loads of other cool stuff.

Flyguy

Wow. That sounds so much more exciting than what I do.

CodeBreaker

We all need wills in our lives and someone to manage our estates. Never underestimate how important what you do is.

Flyguy

That’s true. Do you code and design the games?

CodeBreaker

Yes.

Flyguy

That’s really cool. I’ve only ever met one other woman who designs software.

CodeBreaker

There are more women writing code and designing computer games in the industry now than when I first started. But I want to change that.

Flyguy

That’s amazing. I hate to cut our conversation short but I gotta go. I’m due in court tomorrow and I have hours of preparation to do.

Shit, I shouldn’t have said that. Don’t go looking up the court records.

CodeBreaker

Never. That would be cheating.

Flyguy

Breaking the code?

CodeBreaker

Exactly. Good luck tomorrow.

Flyguy

I’m busy the day after that, too. Big work thing. Boring. *yawning emoji* So if you don’t hear from me, I haven’t ghosted you, I promise. I’ve never ghosted anyone.

CodeBreaker

Okay. Miss you already.

Flyguy

Don’t forget me.

CodeBreaker

How could I? I’m already addicted to whatever is happening between us.

Flyguy

You might just get that dinner date sooner than you think if you keep saying things like that! *winking emoji*
