It doesn’t take her long to go through the books. It takes my other guy days.
Now she is padding down the hall in an oversized wool cardigan and bare feet with my books under her arm and a pen behind her ear.
The woman who mapped Pietty's reception in ten minutes looks, for one disarming second, like she belongs to this house.
I keep my eyes on the screen and my face on neutral.
I've spent twenty years not showing rooms what I'm thinking. I can manage one woman in a doorway.
"You found something," I say. She wouldn't have left the kitchen otherwise.
"I found two things." She comes into the ops room without waiting for the invitation, which I notice and approve of, and sets the folder down on the only clear corner of my table. "One of them you'll be annoyed about. The other one you'll be annoyed you didn't see."
"Those sound like the same thing."
"They're adjacent." She flips the folder open to a page she's marked, not with a flag but with a fold, a small precise crease.
"Here. Your Gdansk routing. You're running empty backhaul on the Baltic leg three weeks out of four, and your rate card prices it like it's full.
You're eating the deadhead and calling it overhead. "
I look. She's right. It's not a large number, the kind of erosion that hides inside a healthy quarter, the kind three analysts signed off on because the line above it was green.
"That's a forty-thousand-a-month rounding error," I say.
"It's a forty-thousand-a-month rounding error that's been rounding for fourteen months, so it's a little over half a million dollars you've decided not to think about.
" She says it without triumph, which is somehow worse.
"I'm not telling you it'll sink you. I'm telling you it's there, and a man who keeps his own books by hand shouldn't have a leak this tidy sitting in his blind spot. It offended me. So I flagged it."
I lean back. The chair takes my weight. The harbor sits in the window behind her and I look at Juliette Koraleva holding my own numbers up to me like a mirror I didn't ask for, and the thing I feel isn’t annoyance, though I'd let her believe it is.
It's the other thing. The thing I have a strict policy about feeling.
"And the second."
She turns the page. "This one's not a leak.
This one's a person." Her finger lands on a counterparty line, a freight forwarder routed through three of my smaller contracts.
"Whoever this is, they're invoicing you on a fee schedule that doesn't match the other two forwarders doing identical work.
Eight percent higher, consistently, structured to stay just under the threshold that would trigger a review.
That's not inefficiency. That's somebody skimming, and they're good at it, because they know exactly where your audit floor is. "
I don’t move.
"You got all that from one morning with the books?"
"I got that from being raised by a man who skims," she says simply. "You learn it at the dinner table. It has a smell. That invoice smells like my father." She straightens. "You have a thief, Serik. A small, patient, well-informed one. I'd want to know who told them where your floor was."
And there it is. Not the half million. The half million is money.
This is the thing my analysts didn't catch and she found before lunch, the loose thread that means someone inside has been talking, and she pulled it in one tug because she grew up in a house where everyone was always stealing from everyone and she learned to read it before she learned to drive.
I've spent my whole life being the person in the room who sees what others miss. I’m not accustomed to the view from the other side of that. I expected to dislike it.
I don't dislike it at all. That's the problem currently standing in my ops room in a cardigan that makes me want to see her naked.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" she asks.
"Like what?"
"Like a manifest that finally reconciled.
You did it last night too, in the hall." She tilts her head, and there's a challenge in it, and underneath the challenge there's something less composed that she's working to keep down.
"I've spent my life being looked at. I know all the different kinds, but I don't know that one. "
"It's recalculation," I tell her, because she's earned an honest answer and because I'm curious what the truth does to her face.
"I built a model of you from a four-page file and one night.
Decorative. Useful. Sharp. Worth overpaying for.
" I stand, because the conversation has reached the point where sitting is a kind of lie.
"You keep coming in over the estimate. Every hour I revise you upward. I don't enjoy being wrong, Juliette."
The room gets quiet.
"That's a very long way to say I was right about the Baltic leg," she says, but her voice has lost a little of its floor.
"You were right about the Baltic leg." I come around the table.
"You were also right about the forwarder, and the skimmer, and the smell of your father, and I'd hire you in a heartbeat if I weren't already marrying you, which raises an awkward question about which of those two things I actually want more. "
"And which is it?" she asks with an upward tilt at the corners of her mouth which could almost pass as a grin if it were for the challenge in her eyes.
"That's the recalculation in progress." I stop in front of her.
"Last night I told you I had no interest in owning a woman.
That's still true. What I didn't account for is wanting one.
The file didn't mention it. I've had to derive it from scratch, this morning, watching you offend yourself over my rounding errors. "
"Serik." It's barely anything. My name, and a warning, and an invitation, all three folded into two syllables the way she folds everything, precise, economical, giving the room nothing and giving me, I'm beginning to understand, more than she's ever given anyone.
"You can tell me to stop," I say. "I'll go back to the screens and we'll never discuss it, and you'll run my Baltic leg and I'll pretend the only thing I find remarkable about you is your intelligence. Say the word and I'll file this and never reopen it."
She looks up at me. The pen's still behind her ear. There's a smudge of toner on the side of her hand from fourteen months of my mistakes. She is, in this moment, the least decorative she has been since I met her, and it's the most I've ever wanted anything.
I close the distance and kiss her, and she rises into it instead of yielding to it, one hand fisting in the front of my shirt with the same decisive grip she used on my bleeding palm last night.
Like she's claiming a discrepancy, like I'm something she found in the books and intends to keep.
There's nothing tentative in her. She decided in the hall last night and she's just been waiting for the arithmetic to catch up.
Now it has, she kisses me like a woman closing a deal she negotiated herself, on her terms.
The pen falls out from behind her ear and hits the floor but neither of us reaches for it.
When she pulls back, it's only far enough to look at me, and her composure is gone, finally, properly gone, and what's under it isn’t soft.
It's certain. That's the thing about Juliette I keep failing to model.
Underneath the armor there isn't fear. There's a woman who knows exactly what she wants and has simply never, in her entire life, been allowed to want it out loud.
"For the record," she says, slightly breathless, entirely herself, "I'm still billing you for finding the skimmer."
"I'd be insulted if you didn't."
"And I want a real office. Not the kitchen island.
" She steps back, smooths the cardigan, retrieves her pen from my floor with that unhurried economy, and by the time she straightens she's rebuilt about forty percent of the armor, which I find I want to dismantle all over again immediately.
"If I'm running your numbers, I'm not doing it standing up. "
"You can work in here." I gesture to the room. "It's yours, if you can stand to share with me."
She looks around the room, the screens and the pins and the chaos that matches the inside of my head.
"Da," she says.
