Chapter 39

LILY

Mason pulls back.

Not slowly. Not gently. He steps away from me like I've burned him, his jaw clenched so tight I can see the muscle working. His breathing is ragged. His eyes are dark and dangerous and hungry.

“I need to go,” he says.

The words don't make sense. “What?”

“This isn't over.” He runs a hand through his hair, and I watch his entire body vibrate with the effort of restraint. “But if I don't leave right now, I'm not going to be able to stop.”

I blink at him as he moves toward the door. “Did you... Didn’t you like it?”

He pauses, his hand on the doorknob. A sound comes out of him—something between a laugh and a growl. “Pretty girl, I liked it too much.”

He's gone before I can respond. The door closes behind him with a soft click that feels impossibly loud.

I stand in my living room, my lips still tingling, my body still burning, completely bewildered.

My phone buzzes.

Unknown Number

Lock your door.

I stare at the message. Really it’s a command.

How does he have my number?

For that matter, how long has he been lurking around my house “protecting me”?

My hands shake as I lock the deadbolt.

My phone buzzes again.

Unknown Number

That’s my pretty girl.

Good night, Lily.

I press the phone to my chest and try to remember how to breathe.
