24. Sparrow
It’s been a week since King and Ace brought puppies home, and I hate to admit it, but King made the right decision. Both of the kids are excited to care for the puppy they named Benny. Benny is a character name on Supernatural, one of my favorite shows. I made the mistake of letting them watch Supernatural , which caused Loch nightmares, and Telle wanting to name the puppy some questionable names. I’m glad they landed on Benny, because some of the options made me cringe.
Telle has surprised me by waking up early every day to let Benny out and feed him, and when Loch wakes up, she takes him back outside to play. Benny and Ace’s puppy, Lilith, have their cages in the mudroom, but Ace has been letting Lilith in his room, and the kids have been swapping nights with Benny.
If it weren’t for the fact that I’m terrified to step foot out of the house, things are going great. King and I have our routine with the kids, we have family dinner, then we alternate between game or movie nights before the kids go to bed. From the very first day King has been a natural father. I used to dream about how he would be with the kids, somehow the reality is even better.
“You ready, Bird?” Looking over my shoulder, I find King leaning on the doorframe of the bathroom, where I’m finishing getting ready. The whole lean against the doorframe move should be illegal for men. With the smirk King is sending my way, he knows what he is doing to me.
Skye begged us to go out to dinner with her and Cam tonight, but I’m not super ecstatic that the restaurant is over an hour away. But when I saw the excitement on my friend’s face, I knew I couldn’t tell her no. She is starting to get excited about her pregnancy now that she has hit her second trimester, and she is able to keep food down.
With one last curl, I stand up from the vanity King bought me and turn to face him. Since I didn’t want to go out to any stores, I crossed my fingers when I was online shopping. Gauging the heat in King’s eyes, he approves of the new outfit. I’ve finally put on some weight, even though I’m still stressed out, and I’m loving the new curves that have come with it.
“Bird…damn. Ya think we can just stay home?” King slowly licks his lips as he takes me in, making me wish that we didn’t have plans tonight.
“I’m tempted, but I think Skye might kill us.” Walking up to King, I waste no time sticking my hands under his shirt and running them up his abs. This man is pure temptation wrapped up in a layer of sin.
Hearing our names being called, I pull my hands from under his shirt and smooth it out. Taking his hand, I kiss along the tattoo of my name, and lead King out of the bathroom, and down the hall.
Meeting Cam and Skye in the living room, I take in the scene. Loch somehow convinced Ace to play dress up with her, and she is currently putting eyeshadow on him, while Telle and River play video games, the dogs at their feet. I quickly snap a picture, this one is most definitely going on the wall to display.
“Telle, please pause the game. Loch give Uncle Ace a break.” The kids do as I ask and run over to King and I. “Uncle Ace and Uncle River are in charge. Don’t fight when they tell you it’s time for bed.”
“We’ll be good, Mom,” Loch and Telle say at the same time before giving King and I hugs, and running off.
Ace wraps an arm around me. “Don’t worry, sis. The kids will be safe. You know Riv and I won’t let anything happen to them.” I know that, but it’s really hard to take him seriously with bright blue eyeshadow on.
While I grab my purse from the island, King talks quietly with his brothers before meeting me at the back door. Cam offered to drive so once King and I are in the back seat of the truck, we're off.
God, I don’t think I’ve ever been this full. The restaurant was an hour east of Chapel Falls, hidden deep in the woods, in a massive wood cabin lodge. The inside was what I imagine a log cabin mansion out west would be like: a large stone fireplace, wood planked walls, and floor-to-ceiling windows along the back wall.
I’ve never been somewhere so nice.
“So, we wanted to talk to you guys about something,” Skye says from across the table. King’s hand immediately finds mine from under the table. The little touches he has been giving me since we got into the truck has me feeling strung tight. One more touch and I fear I might push him into a stockroom.
“Is everything okay?” I nervously ask. My thoughts are going a mile a minute, immediately going to the worst-case scenario.
“We wanted to ask you guys if you would be this little one’s godparents,” Cam informs King and me.
Tears immediately sting my eyes, as I look at my best friend. Skye came into my life, and I immediately didn’t feel so alone anymore. All it took was one conversation and we were like long lost best friends. I had given up, thinking that it was just going to be the kids and I. Skye quickly stepped in as an aunt to the kids, and as a sister that I always wanted but never had. Skye is one of the best people I have ever met; she didn’t have the best life growing up, but you would never be able to tell.
She radiates goodness.
“Bird?” I jump when King says my name, realizing that I’ve just been staring across the table, not saying anything.
“I’m sorry! I would be honored, thank you.” I rush out.
“Me too. I’m really happy for you, guys,” King tells Cam and Skye before reaching into his pocket and pulling out his cellphone.
“Sorry, it’s Ace.” King quickly answers the phone, getting up from the table. I watch him walk outside and am tempted to follow him. Ace wouldn’t be calling if it wasn’t an emergency. The server comes back with the checks, Cam quickly gives his card for both tabs.
“You didn’t have to do that, Cam,” I say quietly, while still watching over my shoulder for King to come back inside.
King comes walking back inside, quickly making it back to the table. I can’t gauge his facial expression for any insight into what’s wrong.
“What is it?” I ask as I stand up from the table.
“Nothing, Bird. Ace just wanted to let me know that he had to go up to the motel. Dad and Riv are with the kids.” I don’t think that’s the complete truth, but I’ll let it go for now. I don’t want to ruin our fun night out, but King is going to have to start being honest with me if we’re going to make this work.
“I’ll be right back; I need to run to the restroom.” I start walking towards the restrooms, when Skye catches up to me.
“You didn’t believe that, did you?” Skye whispers at my side.
“Of course not. I’m starting to think King is incapable of telling me the full truth without me pressuring him,” I snap.
Washing my hands, Skye comes out of the stall and starts washing her hands next to me. “Are you okay, PB?”
That is such a loaded question.
“I honestly don’t know. I’m so glad that King is back in my life, but I wish it wasn’t under these circumstances. I also don’t love that even though it’s about me, he leaves details out. We are not a team.”
“I’m not defending him; I’m team Sparrow every time. But…this is how these men are. Alpha, I’ll take care of everything, you’ll want for nothing, and if someone is fucking with you, they will take care of it.”
I know Skye is right, but it doesn’t do anything for the irritation I’m feeling. Walking out of the bathroom, we are met by Cam and King waiting for us in the hallway. Skye and Cam take the lead out of the restaurant, while King and I trail behind.
Once we are back in the truck, King throws his arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer to him. “You good, Bird?” he whispers into my ear.
“Yep.” Is the only response I can muster up. Once we’re home, I’ll say more, but I don’t want to get into it in front of Cam and Skye.
Skye talks about how she wants to decorate the nursery the entirety of the trip home. I’m trying to not let jealousy invade my senses, but it’s hard not to. I didn’t have any of the things for the twins that she is talking about buying. I didn’t have anyone, so I didn’t have a baby shower. I try to give feedback, but half the things she mentions, I have no idea what they are.
Once back home, I check on the sleeping kids and head to our bathroom. I’m ready to get out of this dress, put on my pajamas, take off my makeup, and climb into bed.
“Bird, we need to talk,” King cautiously tells me.
“Hmm,” I mumble out.
Yeah, we do.
Squeezing past King, I get into bed, grabbing my iPad off the bedside table. King surprises me when he climbs over me, takes the iPad out of my hands, and pulls my body down. “Bird, what was wrong in the truck? Then you are going to tell me what was wrong at the restaurant.”
Of course, he noticed that something was bugging me on the way home.
“I was jealous of my best friend,” I weakly admit. I feel like the worst friend known to man. You aren’t supposed to be jealous of your best friend.
King clearly didn’t expect that answer, his eyebrows hit his hairline. “Jealous? Of what?”
Shaking him off of me, I get out of bed and start pacing. I hate thinking about just how little I had for the twins. “Yes! I didn’t even know half the shit Skye was talking about. The other half is so expensive I would have never been able to get it for the twins.”
King sits up on the edge of the bed as I continue, “I had nothing. The twins had nothing . No playmat. No swing. Nothing. I was an awful mother.”
King springs up from the bed and reaches me in one step. “Don’t ever say that. You did everything you could to care for them. You are the best mother.” I let him lead me back to the bed, where I burrow back in my spot.
King’s hand slips under my tank top as he kisses the side of my head. “And at the restaurant?”
Looking up at his eyes that have the power to always pull me in, I let some of my defenses down.
That’s how easy it is for this man; we are in a barely lit room and all that he needs to do is look at me for me to soften towards him.
“You frequently don’t tell me the full truth, and it’s not sitting right with me. Like we aren’t a team,” I tell him as a snuggle further into his side. “We need to be a team, King. With you by my side, I won't break.”
King starts running his fingers through my hair, which is a sure way to relax me. “I know you aren’t, Bird. But I just got you back, and all I want to do is protect you. I know I need to be better at communicating.”
“I just want to know what’s going on. I’m not going to tell you a different way to handle the situation. I just want to know.” And that’s the truth. I’ll let him take lead as long as he includes me.
Letting out a sigh, King tells me, “Ace called me because someone had been sitting about twenty feet from the driveway. He ended up calling Cam’s friend who is a deputy. They came out, but it was a false alarm, some chick who was lost.”
I mean I guess that’s possible. There aren’t a lot of signs out here, and the cell service isn’t the best. "Thank you for telling me. That's all I needed, King."
"I'm sorry I wasn't open about it." King’s finger starts to circle my nipple, making me involuntarily rub my ass against his hardened dick.
Yeah, I didn’t miss that. That thing is hard to miss…or ignore.
“Bird…” King growls out.
“You started it,” I say before rolling over and pushing King onto his back. Quickly shedding my shorts, I straddle King.
“What are you doing, Bird?” King asks as he lifts my top over my head.
Without answering, I quickly kiss his lips before moving down his body, kissing as many tattoos as I can. Kissing down his stomach, I tap on his side until he lifts up. I quickly pull his underwear down and continue my trail of kisses.
Looking at King through my eyelashes, I take him to the back of my throat. Hearing his throaty moan, spurs me on. Swirling my tongue, I cup his balls, lightly pulling, until King’s hips jerk.
“Fuck…Bird,” King calls out.
Knowing that he is close, and that he prefers to come in me and not down my throat, I slowly release him, before sinking down on his cock.
“Jesus…” King shouts before I bend down further until he captures my lips. “Fuck, Sparrow. I love you.”
He flips us, where he sets an unrelenting pace. It doesn’t take long before I feel like I’m going to come.
“King!” I scream out. I wonder if we should discuss sound proofing this room because we can’t seem to keep our hands off each other.
“That’s it, Bird. Come for me,” King demands.
One more thrust and we are coming together. This man knows every inch of my body, there is no one better than him. King quickly climbs out of bed, coming back a moment later, a warm rag wiping between my legs. Before I know it, he slips back into bed and pulls me close to him.
My eyes begin to drift close when his lips graze mine. “Goodnight, Bird. I love you so fucking much.”
