Chapter Nine #2
“You understand why I needed to hear that,” I said, not knowing if it was actually a question.
“I do. I’ve watched enough mafia marriages get twisted into something closer to ownership than partnership. I’m not interested in repeating that pattern with you. I mean, none of my brothers repeated that pattern. I wouldn’t dare hope to have what they do, but I can make you feel safe.”
“What about the parts I don’t understand yet? The politics, the way your brothers look at me, the entire structure of this world I apparently married into without a manual.”
“You’ll learn it as you need to. I’m not going to bury you in all of it at once just because the wedding happened. My sisters-in-law will help when you want it. The rest of it, the deeper politics, the parts that took me decades to understand fully, none of that needs to land on you overnight.”
“That’s oddly considerate.”
“I contain multitudes,” he said, and the dry delivery of it startled a laugh out of me despite everything.
It didn’t erase the fear in my chest, but it softened it enough that I let myself lean into the moment instead of bracing against it.
We stayed there talking until past sunset, the private suite slowly dimming around us until the city lights outside took over the job of lighting the room entirely.
By the time we finally made our way back to the penthouse, something between us had shifted.
Something less about distraction and more about the closeness that had been building steadily since the balcony the night before.
The tension resurfaced naturally once we were back inside.
Dmitri stayed careful with me the way he had every day since I’d told him about my inexperience, aware of my boundaries in a manner that felt increasingly deliberate rather than simply cautious, like he’d been paying closer attention than I realized to exactly what I needed and when.
When we finally found ourselves alone together in the quiet of the living room, the intimacy between us built slowly instead of exploding all at once.
This time there was no panic underneath it, no adrenaline left over from danger to confuse everything else I was feeling.
It was just familiarity and the trust that had grown steadily over two impossible weeks.
He kissed me slowly like we had all the time in the world.
I let myself lean into it completely this time, my hands finding the front of his shirt the way they always seemed to, and when he lifted me gently and carried me toward the bedroom, I didn’t hesitate the way I might have a week earlier.
My legs went around his waist almost automatically.
What followed was nothing like what I’d imagined, in the vague, anxious way I’d occasionally allowed myself to imagine it over the years.
It wasn’t about anything except the two of us learning each other slowly, carefully, Dmitri watching my face throughout with the same patient attention he’d given me across a poker table, adjusting to every small reaction.
“You okay?” he asked, his voice almost a groan as he slid his hard length into me.
Seeing how much this affected him sprinkled a bit of pride and hunger over the desire and ecstasy that was beginning to overwhelm my senses. All the embarrassment I felt from him seeing me fully naked disappeared in that second.
I nodded frantically, screwing my eyes shut as a sliver of pain flashed through me.
He stayed like that, not moving as he held himself up with his hands on either side of me. His lips grazed my neck, his tongue tantalizing me in a way I didn’t know I needed. Then he brought his mouth to my right ear and said, “Tell me when it’s okay to start moving.”
I moved my head to the side, kissing him as I placed my hand on his lower back, urging him closer. Getting the unspoken permission, he pulled out and plunged all the way in, making me let out a sound that was somewhere between a sigh and a moan.
Then he started moving in and out, his hands kneading my breasts then cradling my face as he dropped random kisses on my lips.
“Yes… yes…” I moaned as he moved faster.
Still, I could see the restraint. There was a vulnerability in it that overwhelmed me. I hadn’t known, until that night, how much difference there could be between wanting someone and being wanted back with that same careful attention.
I hadn’t expected gentleness like that from a man who’d built his entire life around danger. I hadn’t expected how safe gentleness like that could actually feel, coming from someone capable of the opposite.
“Dmitri,” I called breathlessly as I felt my body begin to shudder.
“Come all over me,” he all but commanded my body.
I came, panting, my toes curling as my hips lifted off the bed. He kept moving into me and the first orgasm crashing into another one. Then he stiffened, his growl a sound I knew I’d replay privately for a long time.
Afterward, we lay tangled together in the quiet. His fingers traced my back while my head rested against his chest. I felt myself drifting, and I fell asleep in his arms without the panic that thought would have caused me only days earlier.
He didn’t move for a long time after that. I woke briefly sometime in the night and found him still there, like he was afraid that shifting even slightly might break whatever fragile peace had settled over the two of us.
“You’re awake,” I murmured, my voice thick with sleep.
“Couldn’t sleep.”
“Why not?”
“Didn’t want to miss it. Watching you actually rest, for once, without flinching at every sound the building makes.”
“That’s a strange thing to stay awake for.”
“Maybe. I’ve spent most of my life not particularly caring whether I slept or not. It just felt like something worth staying present for.”
I didn’t have a response, so I simply pressed closer against him and felt him exhale slowly.
Lying there in the dark, listening to his steady breathing, I understood something I hadn’t fully until that moment.
Safety inside Dmitri’s world didn’t mean the absence of danger. It never would, as long as I stayed married to a man whose entire life was built on it.
It meant being chosen. Deliberately. In a way nobody else in my life had ever chosen me before, without conditions attached, without needing me to be anything other than exactly what I was.
