Chapter Four The Crossing #3
“The mark on that paper belongs to the Ninth Circle.”
Anthony frowned.
“That sounds dramatically evil.”
Rose didn’t smile.
“It should.”
Lucas looked toward her.
“What is it?”
“The part of the Covenant Elias created after Joseph forced him out.”
Naomi’s stomach tightened.
“How many parts of this organization exist?”
“Too many.”
“What does the Ninth Circle want?”
Rose’s voice lowered.
“They believe blood determines ownership.”
Lucas looked at Naomi.
“Ownership of what?”
Rose answered.
“The Covenant.”
“The monastery.”
“The archives.”
“The hidden routes.”
“Everything Joseph tried to dismantle.”
Naomi touched her pendant.
“And because Elias is my grandfather…”
“You are his direct heir.”
Naomi’s jaw tightened.
“I’ve already said I don’t want it.”
Rose looked sad.
“They don’t care.”
Anthony folded his arms.
“Let me guess. Their charter doesn’t include consent.”
Rose shook her head.
“The Ninth Circle believes a leader is chosen by blood and confirmed by trial.”
Naomi frowned.
“What trial?”
Rose looked directly at her.
“The heir must enter the House of the Bluebird and survive until the fifth bell rings.”
Silence.
Lucas’s face changed.
“No.”
Naomi looked toward Rose.
“What happens if the heir refuses?”
Her answer came quietly.
“Someone else in the bloodline may challenge.”
“Serrano.”
“Yes.”
Naomi slowly understood.
“If Mateo is my biological father, then he has a claim through Elias.”
Rose nodded.
“But you are the next generation.”
“And that makes my claim stronger.”
“Yes.”
Naomi laughed bitterly.
“I don’t want a claim.”
“The Ninth Circle does not require desire.”
Lucas stepped toward the screen.
“Then they can find another tradition.”
Rose’s face tightened.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“The trial has already begun.”
Naomi stopped.
“How?”
Rose looked toward the tracker.
“Someone reached her coat.”
Then the luggage.
Then the ship.
“They could have killed Naomi in London.”
Lucas went still.
“But they didn’t.”
Rose nodded.
“They’re testing whether she notices.”
Naomi looked at the note.
Pattern recognition.
Surveillance.
Adaptation.
They weren’t simply following her.
They were measuring her.
Anthony looked disturbed.
“So everything since the balcony…”
“May have been part of it.”
Naomi thought of Amara’s studio.
The plane tickets.
The false route.
The tracker.
Each decision.
Each response.
Someone had been watching.
Judging.
She looked toward the sea.
“What happens at the fifth bell?”
Rose hesitated.
Then answered.
“The person still standing becomes the Keeper.”
Lucas turned toward Naomi.
“No.”
This time she understood he wasn’t ordering her.
He was afraid.
She took his hand.
“I’m not trying to become Keeper.”
“That doesn’t mean they won’t force you into the trial.”
Commander Ross looked toward the route.
“Then we do not go to the monastery.”
Naomi remained silent.
Everyone looked toward her.
Lucas knew that expression.
“Naomi.”
She turned.
“If we don’t go, the Ninth Circle remains.”
“Yes.”
“If Serrano reaches the House first?”
Rose answered.
“He can invoke blood claim.”
“And if he becomes Keeper?”
Rose’s face hardened.
“He gains access to every hidden identity Elias preserved.”
Commander Ross understood immediately.
“Witnesses.”
“Rescued children.”
“Protected families.”
“Government informants.”
Rose nodded.
“Thousands.”
Naomi looked toward Lucas.
His expression already told her he understood what she was about to say.
“Then we can’t walk away.”
His eyes closed briefly.
“No.”
Naomi squeezed his hand.
“We’re not going because I want the inheritance.”
“I know.”
“We’re going because nobody should own those people’s lives.”
“I know.”
“I need you beside me.”
Lucas opened his eyes.
Fear remained.
So did love.
“Always.”
Hours later, Naomi stood alone on the deck.
Spain was still beyond the horizon.
But it no longer felt far away.
Lucas eventually joined her.
He didn’t speak.
He simply stood beside her.
Naomi looked toward him.
“You’re angry.”
“Terrified.”
“That too.”
He stared at the water.
“I’m trying very hard not to become my father.”
“What would Hudson do?”
“Lock you in a secure room and go to Spain himself.”
Naomi smiled.
“You considered it.”
“Extensively.”
“Thank you for not doing it.”
“You’re welcome.”
She leaned against him.
Lucas wrapped an arm around her.
“What if I become Keeper accidentally?” Naomi asked.
He looked down.
“Is that a serious question?”
“Yes.”
“I suppose we’ll add it to the wedding planning.”
Naomi laughed.
“Venue.”
“Flowers.”
“Guest list.”
“Ancient international covenant.”
“Very traditional.”
She rested her head against his chest.
“Lucas.”
“Yes?”
“If something happens in Spain…”
“No.”
“Listen.”
He hated the seriousness in her voice.
She turned toward him.
“If I have to choose between the Covenant and someone’s life, I choose the person.”
“Every time.”
“Even if it means Serrano wins.”
Lucas nodded.
“Every time.”
“That’s what Dad wrote.”
“I remember.”
“Protect people before possessions.”
“Yes.”
Naomi looked toward the horizon.
“Then maybe that’s the only trial I need to understand.”
Lucas kissed her forehead.
The Blue Heron continued south.
Behind them, someone had found their route.
Ahead, the Ninth Circle waited.
And beneath the mountains of Spain stood a monastery where Naomi’s bloodline had been gathering secrets for generations.
But for the first time, the House of the Bluebird was not waiting for an heir who wanted power.
It was waiting for a woman prepared to destroy the inheritance rather than let it own another human life.
Naomi watched the horizon.
Somewhere beyond it, Amara was waiting.
Elias was hiding.
Serrano was coming.
And the fifth bell had already begun counting down.
