Chapter Eight The Choice Joseph Left Behind #3
Adrian looked toward Mercer.
Mercer nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Naomi's anger exploded.
"He knew?"
"Elias found Arthur's original correspondence."
"When?"
"Before Gabriel became Serrano."
Naomi understood.
Elias had radicalized Gabriel using a lie.
Not merely exploiting hurt.
Manufacturing it.
Adrian's face darkened.
"He told Gabriel Edmund chose Hudson."
"Yes."
Mercer's voice was heavy.
"He told him he had been rejected."
Naomi folded the letter carefully.
Her hands trembled.
"Elias created Serrano."
Mercer shook his head.
"No one creates another person's cruelty."
The exact words Amara had used.
"But he built the wound Gabriel organized his life around."
Naomi looked toward the passage.
Elias wasn't simply a controlling old man.
He had weaponized a young man's identity.
He had lied to Gabriel about his father.
Helped turn pain into revenge.
And hundreds had paid for it.
A loud alarm sounded.
Mercer turned.
"What is that?"
His face drained.
"No."
Adrian looked toward him.
"What?"
Mercer ran toward the control panel.
A red symbol appeared.
Flame.
Serrano.
Below it:
CLAIMANT HAS ENTERED THE BELL CHAMBER.
Naomi's stomach dropped.
"He found it."
Mercer grabbed the trigger device.
Lucas stepped closer.
"What happens if he rings the fifth bell alone?"
Mercer looked at them.
"He becomes Keeper."
Adrian swore.
Naomi gripped Joseph's letter.
"How long do we have?"
The monastery trembled.
From somewhere deep beneath them came the sound of a mechanism engaging.
Mercer looked toward the ceiling.
"Minutes."
Naomi turned to Adrian.
No hesitation remained between them.
"Ready?"
He nodded.
"Sister?"
"Yes?"
"If we survive this—"
"When."
He almost smiled.
"When we survive this, I'd like to know you."
Emotion hit her unexpectedly.
Naomi reached for his hand.
"You will."
Lucas came beside her.
"So will I."
Adrian looked at him.
"I'm still deciding whether I like you."
Lucas nodded.
"Understandable."
Naomi almost laughed.
Then another alarm sounded.
The flame symbol flashed.
Serrano had reached the final door.
Naomi looked at Mercer.
"Take us to the bell."
Mercer hesitated.
Naomi's expression hardened.
"You spent my entire life deciding when I was ready."
She stepped closer.
"You're done."
Mercer stared at her.
Then something changed.
Perhaps he finally saw what Joseph had seen.
Not an heir.
Not a student.
A woman who did not need his permission.
He nodded.
"This way."
They ran.
The passage descended steeply.
Naomi held Joseph's letter inside her jacket.
Lucas stayed close enough that their shoulders nearly touched.
Adrian ran ahead with Mercer.
Alarms echoed through the tunnels.
Somewhere above them, Commander Ross, Amara, Beatrice, and Elias were trapped in other chambers.
Somewhere ahead, Serrano was preparing to take control of an institution that had manipulated their family for generations.
Naomi's mind raced.
The fifth bell was not a throne.
It was a choice.
One person could claim power.
Two heirs could surrender it.
Joseph had known.
He had built his final hope around Naomi and Adrian finding one another.
Not because they shared blood.
Because he believed they might choose differently.
They turned a corner.
A massive chamber opened ahead.
At the far end hung the fifth bell.
Not the small brass bell from the memorial room.
A colossal iron bell suspended beneath the mountain itself.
Bluebird wings were carved around its base.
Serrano stood beneath it.
One hand held the rope.
Elias stood several feet away.
Naomi stopped.
"Elias?"
He looked toward her.
His face was gray.
Weak.
But he had somehow reached the chamber.
Amara stood behind him.
Ross beside her.
Beatrice near the wall.
Everyone had been brought together.
Four claimants.
Exactly as Joseph's letter required.
Serrano looked at Naomi.
"You came."
Naomi stepped forward.
"So did my brother."
Adrian emerged beside her.
Serrano stared at the twins.
For one moment, his face softened.
"My children."
Naomi held up Joseph's letter.
"No."
His expression changed.
She walked closer.
"We're going to tell you the truth."
Serrano tightened his hand around the rope.
"I've heard enough Taylor truth for one lifetime."
"This isn't Taylor truth."
Naomi glanced toward Elias.
"This is about the lie that made you."
Elias's eyes closed.
Serrano noticed.
His gaze sharpened.
"What lie?"
Naomi stopped ten feet away.
Lucas stood behind her.
Adrian beside her.
Amara watched from across the room.
Naomi looked into the face of her biological father.
Then she gave him the truth Joseph had died protecting.
"Edmund Taylor never knew you existed."
The rope slipped slightly through Serrano's hand.
Silence.
Naomi continued.
"He didn't choose Hudson over you."
Serrano's expression emptied.
"He didn't erase you."
"Stop."
"Arthur did."
"I said stop."
"Elias knew."
Serrano looked toward him.
The chamber went silent.
Elias did not deny it.
Something changed in Serrano's face.
Not anger at first.
Devastation.
Pure.
Childlike.
Thirty years of identity cracking at once.
"You told me..."
Elias whispered,
"Gabriel—"
"You told me he rejected us."
Elias said nothing.
Serrano stepped away from the bell.
"You said my father knew."
"I needed you to understand what the Taylors were capable of."
"You lied."
"Yes."
The word echoed.
Serrano stared at him.
Then laughed.
Once.
A terrible sound.
"You built me out of a lie."
Elias looked older than the mountain.
"I thought anger would make you strong."
Serrano's eyes filled.
"It made me a monster."
No one spoke.
Naomi felt Amara begin crying.
Serrano looked toward her.
Then Adrian.
Then Naomi.
The rope hung beside him.
Power within reach.
But for the first time, Mateo Serrano did not look powerful.
He looked like Gabriel Vega.
A boy who had spent his life trying to punish a father who never knew he had a son.
Naomi's voice softened.
"What you do with the truth now is yours."
Serrano looked at her.
She did not forgive him.
She did not excuse him.
She simply refused to let Elias's lie be the only truth he carried.
Serrano looked toward the bell.
Then back at Naomi.
"What happens if you ring it?"
Naomi glanced at Adrian.
"We end the Keeper."
Serrano stared.
"We end the Ninth Circle."
Adrian stepped forward.
"The archives go beyond individual control."
"Protected identities go to independent guardianship."
"Criminal evidence goes to authorities."
Naomi continued.
"No one inherits this again."
Serrano laughed bitterly.
"You would destroy your inheritance."
Naomi looked around the chamber.
"No."
She reached for Adrian's hand.
"I'm choosing it."
The fifth bell waited.
So did every lie that had brought them there.
Naomi looked at Serrano.
"Step away from the rope."
His eyes moved toward Elias.
Then Amara.
Then his children.
Slowly, his hand opened.
The rope fell free.
Naomi exhaled.
But before anyone could move, a gunshot exploded through the chamber.
Amara screamed.
Lucas grabbed Naomi.
Adrian spun.
Serrano staggered.
Blood appeared across the front of his shirt.
Naomi stared in horror.
Behind him stood Daniel Mercer.
Gun raised.
His expression unreadable.
Naomi whispered,
"Professor?"
Mercer aimed again.
And this time, the barrel pointed directly at Elias.
