Chapter Nine Keeper Who Would Not Let Go #3
Lucas smiled.
“No one.”
Adrian exhaled.
“And the criminal evidence?”
“Copied simultaneously to twelve law-enforcement and restitution bodies.”
Mercer's face went pale.
“The cultural archives?”
“Preserved.”
“Artwork records?”
“Preserved.”
“The witness routes?”
“Destroyed.”
Serrano whispered,
“Joseph thought of everything.”
Naomi shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked toward her.
She stared at the bell.
“He finally learned.”
Three minutes.
Adrian moved to one side of the rope.
Naomi stood beside him.
The bell was enormous above them.
Elias stepped forward.
For the first time since Naomi met him, there was no command in his posture.
Only an old man facing the ruins of his certainty.
“If you do this, the Covenant as we knew it ends.”
Naomi looked at him.
“It ended a long time ago.”
“You could rebuild it better.”
“No.”
“Naomi—”
“No.”
She glanced toward Adrian.
“We already had a childhood stolen because adults kept trying to build better versions of broken systems.”
Adrian nodded.
“We're not giving it another generation.”
Elias’s eyes filled.
“You are both so much like Joseph.”
Naomi shook her head.
“We're not doing it because we're like him.”
She looked at her brother.
“We're doing it because he finally trusted us to be ourselves.”
Two minutes.
Serrano struggled to stand.
Amara tried to stop him.
“I have to.”
“You’ve lost too much blood.”
“I have to stand.”
Adrian moved toward him.
For one second he hesitated.
Then offered his hand.
Serrano stared at it.
His son.
The child he had never known.
Slowly, Serrano took it.
Adrian helped him upright.
Naomi’s throat tightened.
No forgiveness passed between them.
But neither did hatred.
Not in that moment.
They positioned Serrano beside Elias.
Four living claimants.
One minute.
Beatrice stepped back.
Ross lowered her weapon but kept Mercer in sight.
Amara stood between the two men who had shaped and damaged her life.
Lucas came to Naomi.
He kissed her forehead.
“Ready?”
Naomi looked at Adrian.
Her twin wrapped one hand around the rope.
She placed hers beneath his.
“No.”
Adrian smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Naomi laughed.
“Let's do it anyway.”
Ten seconds.
Nine.
Eight.
Mercer suddenly moved.
Ross shouted.
“Stop!”
But Mercer wasn't reaching for a weapon.
He ran toward the bell.
“Daniel!” Adrian shouted.
Mercer grabbed the rope above their hands.
Naomi stared.
“What are you doing?”
His eyes were wild.
“You don't understand what you're destroying.”
Adrian’s face broke.
“Then let go.”
“I can't.”
“Daniel.”
“I can't.”
The countdown reached five.
Four.
Mercer tightened his grip.
Naomi understood.
If he pulled with them—
three heirs would not be ringing.
The release could fail.
Two.
Adrian stared into the face of the man who had raised him.
“Dad.”
Mercer froze.
It was the first time Adrian had called him that.
One.
Adrian's voice cracked.
“If you ever loved me, let me go.”
Mercer stared at him.
The chamber became silent.
Then his hand opened.
He stepped back.
Naomi and Adrian pulled together.
The fifth bell rang.
The sound was enormous.
It moved through the mountain.
Through stone.
Through bone.
Through thirty years of lies.
Blue light raced across the chamber walls.
Every screen activated.
Lines of text appeared.
VISIBLE HEIR CONFIRMED.
HIDDEN HEIR CONFIRMED.
DUAL RELEASE ACCEPTED.
Elias closed his eyes.
Serrano bowed his head.
Mercer began to cry.
Then one final message appeared.
KEEPER AUTHORITY TERMINATED.
Naomi stared.
She had expected victory to feel louder.
Instead, all she felt was relief.
Until another line appeared.
Red.
Flashing.
UNAUTHORIZED EXTERNAL ACCESS DETECTED.
Lucas's expression changed.
“No.”
Ross moved toward the screen.
“What?”
Lucas stared at the incoming connection.
Someone outside the monastery had accessed the system seconds before the release.
A file-transfer bar appeared.
Twenty percent.
Thirty.
Forty.
Naomi’s stomach dropped.
“I thought the identities were encrypted.”
“They are.”
“Then what are they taking?”
Lucas looked toward the file directory.
His face went pale.
“Not the registry.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“What?”
Lucas looked at Naomi.
“They're downloading the criminal archive.”
The evidence.
The names of corrupt officials.
Traffickers.
Collectors.
Judges.
Politicians.
Corporations.
People with fortunes and armies of lawyers.
People who would kill to stop those files from becoming public.
The transfer hit seventy percent.
Ross grabbed her radio.
“Who has external access?”
Beatrice whispered,
“Only one Covenant station was designed to receive an emergency mirror.”
Naomi looked at her.
“Where?”
Beatrice stared at the screen.
“London.”
The transfer reached eighty-nine percent.
Naomi’s pulse thundered.
“Whose station?”
Beatrice looked slowly toward Lucas.
Then Naomi.
And gave them the name.
“Arthur Taylor’s.”
The download reached one hundred percent.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Somewhere in London, every criminal secret buried beneath the House of the Bluebird had just been copied into the heart of the Taylor empire.
And someone had been waiting for the fifth bell to ring.
