26. Epilogue
Epilogue
Three years later
The garden is alive with the chatter of tiny birds and the scent of freshly bloomed lilacs.
I watch as Lev runs after our two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Mila, her laughter ringing through the cool Moscow morning.
She is a bundle of energy, darting barefoot across the grass, her dark curls bouncing with each step.
Lev's playful growl follows her, his strong arms swooping in to lift her high, and her giggles fill the air.
"Again, Papa!" she squeals, her voice a melody of pure joy.
I stand by the kitchen window, the sunlight warming my face, and marvel at how life has become something I wouldn't have dreamed about just a few years ago. The world outside rolls on, but within these walls—and these hearts—we have carved a sanctuary.
"How's breakfast?" Lev calls over, settling Mila into his lap at the small wooden table on the patio.
"It's almost ready," I reply, wiping my hands on a towel. "Does Mila want berries today or just toast?"
"Berries!" Mila shouts, her decision clear and unmistakable as ever.
I scatter fresh berries onto her plate and bring it to her, setting it down beside Lev. "There's tea, too," I note, pouring two mugs, the steam curling into the crisp air.
As Lev reaches for his mug, he meets my eyes, a silent conversation passing between us, filled with love and the shared understanding of our journey. A journey from shadows to light.
"Will Uncle Alexei and Aunt Irina come soon?" Mila asks, her curious eyes—so much like Lev's—looking up at us.
"In a few more days," Lev assures her, ruffling her hair, "And I hear they have something special planned."
Lev and I have made a point of staying close to those who have been constants in our lives, the family we built from loyalty and shared history. It isn't always perfect, and shadows from the past sometimes linger, but we face them together.
"Mama," Mila's berry-stained fingers reach out for me, pulling me down beside her, "Papa says we're going to see animals tomorrow!"
"That's right," I smile, settling on the bench, "We're going to the zoo!"
Her eyes widen with delight, as if the world is a vast, magical place waiting to unfold before her. I watch Lev, his smile mirroring mine, as we both revel in the simple magic of this moment—of family, of shared mornings, of a future we can shape together.
"Do you think she'll remember this when she's older?" I ask him quietly, nodding toward Mila as she focuses intently on squashing berries.
Lev's hand reaches for mine, his touch grounding and certain. "Maybe not all the little things," he says, his gaze steady and warm, "but the love? She'll carry that with her always."
I lean into him, feeling the weight of our past dissolve in the certainty of now.
In this light, with Mila's laughter wrapping around us like a soft duvet, the world is as it should be.
We have chosen each other—and this life—knowing full well the challenges that come with it.
But we also know it is worth every risk, and every moment is a testament to our resilience.
As the sun climbs higher, I feel a profound peace settle within me. Life moves forward, and with every step, we find more of ourselves, side by side. Always moving forward. Always together.
"Ready for an adventure, Mila?" Lev asks, lifting her once more, her giggles echoing into the morning.
"Always, Papa!" she replies, and in her voice, I hear everything I need to know about this life we've built.
