Chapter 13
Things with Onyx and me progressed faster than I would have imagined.
I wasn’t complaining about it, though, because I enjoyed spending time with him.
Ever since we went to that concert, my feelings had gotten stronger for him.
He made me feel safe whenever he was around, and that was all I ever wanted in a partner.
My friends liked him, and his family seemed to like me. When we left his father’s house, I only shared part of what his father told me. What I didn’t tell him was that his father thanked me for bringing the light back into his son’s life.
My heart hurt for him losing his daughter’s mother and having to raise her on his own.
I commended him for that because some men would have left their baby for someone else to raise.
Onyx stepping up like that made me like him even more.
Some days I wondered when the bad side would come out, and so far, it hadn’t happened.
I was used to men being great for the first few weeks, then switching up, but I truly didn’t see that happening with Onyx.
“Good morning.”
“Woof! Woof!”
I looked up when Spencer started barking at the same time I heard a stranger’s voice speak to me.
“Good morning,” I responded as I tried to pull Spencer back.
The man smiled at me, even though Spencer looked like he wanted to bite his head off.
“I’m sorry.” I pulled on Spencer’s leash, but he wasn’t letting up.
That wasn’t the first time he’d done that whenever a man got too close to me. The only men that were allowed to get close to me was Onyx and my dad. Anyone else, he would be ready to take their heads off.
“I see he’s very protective over you.” The guy smiled.
It was a nice smile, but that’s all it was, . . . nice. He didn’t make my heart flutter or butterflies swarm in my belly the way Onyx did. He was just a handsome man, but I wasn’t interested.
“Yeah, he is.” I had a tight hold on Spencer’s leash, but he continued to growl at the man.
“I was hoping to get your phone number. Maybe we could talk sometimes.”
“I’m sorry. I have a boyfriend.”
Onyx and I hadn’t established our relationship, but I liked the direction we were headed in and didn’t want to risk that for a stranger.
“Oh, okay. My bad.” He held his hands up in surrender. “Maybe I’ll see you around sometime.” He winked, then walked away.
It wasn’t until he was halfway down the street that Spencer stopped growling.
“He wasn’t a good guy, was he? Or do you just like Onyx so much?”
Spencer’s head turned when I said Onyx’s name. I rubbed his head and laughed.
“That’s your boy, ain’t it?”
He turned his head to the other side like he understood me. Smiling down at him, I pulled a treat from my pocket and gave it to him, before we continued our walk.
Later that night
I stood on Onyx’s porch in jeans and a hoodie for our date night since he said we would be staying in. I also had my overnight bag slung over my shoulder. I was excited about spending time with him because I couldn’t seem to get him out of my mind.
“Hey, Miss Maverick.”
My face flushed when Onyx opened his door, wearing black sweatpants and a black T-shirt. His locs were pulled into a messy ball on the top of his head, and he wore black Nike slides with black socks. His silver necklace rested against his chest.
“Hi, Onyx.”
“Let me get that for you.”
I handed him my bag, then entered the house. The fragrant smell of food made my stomach growl. Onyx looked down at me and smirked, then closed and locked the front door.
“Did you not eat today?” he asked as he put my bag down near the staircase.
“I did earlier, but I’m hungry again.” I giggled.
I followed him into the living room, looking at all the pictures he had up of Turquoise in different stages of her life.
There were some of him with his father and stepmom.
I looked to see if there were any of Turquoise’s mom, but I didn’t see any.
There was one picture of Onyx as a kid with his father and who I assumed was his mother.
“These are for you,” Onyx said as he picked up flowers from the table.
I put them to my nose and sniffed.
“Thank you.”
“I wasn’t sure what your favorite flower was, so I told the florist to give me something to impress this pretty girl I liked.” He smirked.
I sniffed the flowers again and put them back on the table.
“Well, they did a good job. You don’t have to try and impress me though.”
“I will always do things to keep you impressed with me for as long as we are together. And if my feelings are right, we’ll be forever.”
The intensity in his eyes made heat course through my entire body. There wasn’t a hint of it being a lie or even a joke. So far, he’d shown me things that would make me want to stay with him forever.
“You said together like we are now,” I teased.
“Don’t worry. That time will come sooner than you expect.” He winked. “Are you ready to eat? I have an activity for us to do afterward.”
My pearl jumped, and I had to shift a little in my seat.
“If I didn’t know any better, I would think you over there being fresh.”
“What? No.” My hand flew to my chest as I feigned innocence.
Onyx stood from the couch and stuck his hand out for me to grab.
When I was on my feet, he pulled me into his chest and ran his hand down my back. After a few seconds, he slowly lifted my chin with his thumb.
“Don’t act like that now. It was written all over your face.” He pecked my lips. “As far as our activities, we can do whatever you want to do and how you want.” He kissed me again. “If you want to play a round of UNO while you sit on my dick, we can do that.”
My breathing hitched in my chest, but Onyx wasn’t done.
“You know what? I think I like the idea of you sitting on my dick while we play some games.” His voice was low as his finger ran down the middle of my chest.
Even with my hoodie and shirt underneath, I could still feel the warmth from his finger.
I could have been hallucinating because Onyx definitely held me in a trance.
“First, we eat though. I didn’t cook for nothing.
” The corner of his mouth lifted into a sexy smirk.
“Where’s Spencer?” Onyx asked as he led me to the dining room.
It was a good thing we separated when we did because I was close to saying the food and whatever else he had planned could wait. I felt like a horny damn dog every time I was around Onyx, especially once we crossed the line.
I cleared my throat from the lust-filled thoughts I had. “Spencer is with Kayla. I didn’t want to impose.”
Onyx pulled the chair out, then pushed it forward once I was seated.
“He’s your baby. Why would it be imposing on me? That’s like you telling me Turquoise could never come to your house.”
“I would never tell you that, and kids are different from pets.”
He just shrugged and sat in the chair in front of me. The table was a simple four-piece dining room set in dark brown. It was nice and the perfect size for his small family.
“I’m just saying. The next time, you can bring him with you if you want.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. Oh, let me tell you what he did earlier.”
I told Onyx the story about the guy that tried to get my phone number as he scooped pasta onto my plate. It was creamy Cajun chicken Alfredo, and it smelled and looked good. A basket of dinner rolls sat in the middle of the table. One long candle was next to it.
“That’s my boy,” Onyx said once I finished the story.
Initially, I thought about asking if it was okay to bring Spencer, but I changed my mind. I wanted a night of no interruptions, and since Kayla volunteered to watch him, I dropped his ass off on the way to Onyx’s. I giggled to myself because Spencer was very much my son.
“Anyway. How was your day?”
He talked about the few calls he went on. He worked the overnight shift, so he got off earlier that morning. I would have told him to cancel the date if he worked later. Or at least offered to fix the food, but I had a feeling he would have told me no.
We talked about basic stuff while we ate. Once we finished eating, we moved back to the living room. Onyx moved the coffee table back so we could sit on the floor. The flowers were moved to a different table in the room. The black carpet was plush and comfortable.
A bottle of wine sat on the coffee table, and I noticed a LEGO box. I couldn’t see which one it was, because Onyx had something covering it.
“Are we building a LEGO set?”
“We are, and it’s not just any set.” He moved to the box in front of my face, and my eyes lit up when I noticed it was a Nintendo Gameboy set.
“Eek.” I clapped my hands.
Onyx chuckled as he took the pieces out of the box.
“I’m glad you are excited about it. It shouldn’t take us long to put it together since it has under five hundred pieces.”
Onyx spread the pieces around the table, then we got to work.
We were quiet for the most part, except to help each other put the pieces together.
Occasionally, our eyes would meet across the table since he sat on the opposite side—each time, my middle clenched.
Onyx shouldn’t have been as fine as he was.
“Can I ask a question?”
Onyx looked up from putting the two pieces he held together. “Shoot.”
“You talk about your stepmom, but never about your birth mother.”
His eyes darted down to the floor, then back at me.
I reached across the table and grabbed his hand. “We don’t have to discuss it if you don’t want.”
I wasn’t sure if his mother just wasn’t around or what.
“Nah, it’s cool. My mom died.”
“I’m sorry.”
He shook his head, then went on to tell me he lost his mother due to a glioblastoma.
I was familiar with it from when I’d done my residency in neurosurgery.
That had to be hard for him to lose her at such a young age.
I couldn’t imagine losing my parents at any age.
He told me about how he had given his dad and stepmom a hard time during his late teenage years.
Some of it was typical teenage stuff; others were things he should have gotten his ass beaten for.
“I think we are done,” Onyx said as he connected the last piece.
My face lit up when I saw the end result. The simplest things made me happy. Onyx wanted to do something that he was interested in but still kept me in mind by building something I loved.
“That was cool. I might have to check out some other sets.” I pulled my phone out of my pocket and took a picture of it.
“You can take it home with you.” He pushed the table to the side of us, giving him nothing but space. He got on his knees and came closer to me. His eyes were on me, sending a chill up my spine.
“Why you shivering?” he asked as he hovered over my face. “I hope you aren’t cold, because I’m about to get you naked.”
I lowered my eyes and licked my lips as I watched his tongue swipe his bottom lip.
“Is that right?” I asked breathlessly.
The seat of my panties was drenched, and my nipples pushed against my shirt.
I was so turned on, a shift of my shirt across my nipples would send me over the edge.
The man hadn’t even done anything to me, but it was how he looked at me.
It was also the wine that we drank. The conversations we had.
The sound of his voice. Everything about his chocolate ass had my hormones in a frenzy.
“Yes.” He unzipped my hoodie. “Remember I said I wanted to play a game with my dick inside of you?” He pushed my hoodie off my arms, then pushed my T-shirt up.
“Yes.” I bit my bottom lip as he ran his tongue over my breast. I still had my bra on, but it still felt good.
“I thought of a game we could play.” Onyx pushed my bra over my breast and licked my nipple before he sucked it into his mouth.
“Oh yeah? What game is that?” My back arched off the couch as he moved over to my other breast. My stomach clenched as I moaned.
“The game where we see how many times I can make you cum.”
I felt his hand rubbing circles on my stomach as he continued sucking and biting my nipples.
“Let’s play then.”
