Volume 1 Chapter 19 - The Spirit Hunt
The forest of Lunareth stretched wide beneath a silver dawn.
Tall trees whispered in the wind, their leaves catching faint glimmers of mana.
For the past few days, Cindy and Puff had made their home in a hollow between two glowing roots — peaceful, quiet, hidden.
Cindy sat on a flower petal, braiding strands of grass together. Her small, humanoid form shimmered faintly in the morning light, and her wings reflected every color of the sunrise.
"Puff," she said softly, "do you think that traveler reached safety?"
Puff, who was chewing on a twig nearby, flicked his ear. "He probably did. I bet he's telling everyone he met a 'mysterious wind spirit' or something."
Cindy smiled faintly. "He might... But that's fine. It's better than the truth."
Puff tilted his head. "You mean, that a nurse from another world turned into a butterfly?"
Cindy giggled. "Exactly."
But the light in her smile faded a little as she stared into the trees.
Unseen, the wind carried voices — faint, distant, human.
"...You hear that?" Puff asked, his tone suddenly alert.
Cindy's wings stiffened. "Voices...?"

Rumors Become a Hunt
Far off, between the trees, several figures in leather armor crept through the undergrowth.
Each bore an insignia — a silver hawk, just like the one on the man Cindy had healed.
"Spread out," ordered the leader, a tall man with a scar across his cheek. "The report said a glowing figure healed Sir Alden near the southern ridge."
A younger scout whispered, "A spirit, maybe? Or a fae creature?"
The leader frowned. "Whatever it is, the Guild wants proof. And if it can heal... the nobles will pay handsomely."
The group moved silently, their boots brushing through leaves.
Unaware to them, a soft gust of wind followed their every move — carrying their whispers straight to Cindy's ears.
?
A Growing Fear
"They're... looking for me," Cindy murmured, her small hands trembling slightly.
Puff's fur bristled. "Tch. I knew this would happen. Humans can't just leave a good thing alone."
Cindy looked down, conflicted. "They're not all bad, Puff. The man we saved — he wasn't cruel."
"That's one out of a hundred," Puff muttered. "And you're not ready to face that kind of attention."
Cindy sighed softly, watching the breeze sway the leaves.
"I just wanted to help..."
She stood, determination flickering in her eyes. "Alright. We'll hide — for now."
Puff nodded. "Right behind you, tiny wings."
?
Hide and Seek
They darted through the forest — Cindy fluttering low, blending with the light, and Puff moving silently in the shadows.
The wind carried the hunters' voices closer.
"Tracks here! Small footprints — too light for an animal."
"Spread out. She's near."
Cindy held her breath, hiding inside a hollow log. Her glowing wings dimmed as she whispered, "Sylph's Veil."
The air shimmered faintly, and her body vanished into the surrounding breeze.
Outside, one of the adventurers paused. "The wind just changed direction..."
The leader narrowed his eyes. "She's here."
He raised his hand. "Wind mages, suppress the area."
A sharp pulse of mana cut through the forest, scattering leaves. Cindy winced — the magical disturbance breaking through her veil.
Her body flickered into view for a heartbeat — a tiny glowing silhouette hovering in the air.
"There!" one shouted. "By the roots!"
?
The Chase
Cindy shot upward, darting between the branches like a streak of light.
"Puff, go!" she cried.
The silver hare burst from the shadows, roots and vines rising in his wake to block the path. "Hold on!"
Cindy landed on his back, clutching his fur. "Run!"
They dashed through the forest, leaves exploding in a trail of wind and dust.
Bolts of light and nets of magic flew past them, missing by inches.
"She's fast!" one of the adventurers yelled. "Don't let her escape!"
Cindy's wings glowed brighter. "Gentle Breeze!"
A burst of air blasted behind them, sending dirt and leaves flying — enough to throw off pursuit.
But the leader of the group didn't stop.
He raised a crystal orb, chanting under his breath. "Wind Beacon — Reveal!"
A faint light locked onto Cindy, glowing like a thread in the air.
Cindy gasped. "They can still track me?!"
"Not for long," Puff said, leaping across a fallen tree. "Hang tight!"
?
The Edge of the Forest
At last, they reached a cliff overlooking a vast lake. The moon shimmered on the surface below, calm and endless.
Cindy turned, chest heaving. The adventurers were still far behind but closing fast.
"I can't keep running like this," she said between breaths. "If I go into the open sky, they'll see me."
Puff's eyes darted around. "Then we hide in the lake."
Cindy blinked. "In the lake?"
He nodded. "You can use your wind to make an air bubble. We go underwater until they pass."
Cindy hesitated, then smiled faintly. "You're getting good at this."
"Just following your example, partner."
They leapt into the water — Cindy forming a shimmering wind dome around them as they sank beneath the surface.
Above, the adventurers reached the cliff moments later.
"Tracks end here," said the leader. "She flew... or vanished."
The others exchanged uneasy glances.
"Could it really be a spirit?" one whispered.
The leader looked out over the lake, wind ruffling his cloak. "If she is... then she doesn't want to be found."
With that, he turned away.
?
Under the Silver Water
Beneath the lake's calm surface, Cindy and Puff floated safely inside their small air bubble.
The moonlight filtered through, illuminating Cindy's tiny face. She let out a long breath, tension fading.
Puff's voice was calm again. "We lost them."
Cindy looked down at her reflection — a small, glowing figure surrounded by water and light.
"Why... does helping someone always lead to this?"
Puff's tone softened. "Because kindness is rare. And rare things get chased."
Cindy smiled weakly. "That's... unfair."
"Yeah," Puff replied. "But that's why the world needs you."
Cindy reached out, letting a droplet touch her fingertip. "Then I'll just have to be careful... and still help when I can."
Puff nodded. "That's the Cindy I know."

As dawn broke, the two emerged quietly from the lake, droplets glimmering on Cindy's wings.
She looked back toward the forest — the wind carrying only silence now.
"Let's keep moving north," she said softly. "Somewhere... the wind won't tell them where I am."
Puff smiled. "Lead the way, tiny spirit."
And with that, they took flight once more — the little butterfly girl and her silver companion, rising into the morning sky where no hunter could follow.
