Volume 1 Chapter 23 - The Hunter in the Storm

The forest had grown quiet.

Too quiet.

Even the wind — her oldest friend — felt uneasy.

Cindy fluttered above the treetops, her wings shimmering faintly with the power she had received from the ruins. Every beat carried traces of mana that made the air sparkle.

Puff trotted beside her on the forest floor, ears twitching. "Something's off. The forest isn't breathing right."

Cindy nodded. "It's heavy... like the air's holding its breath."

The sky darkened slowly, clouds swirling unnaturally over the mountains ahead. Lightning flashed within them, silent but sharp.

Her wings trembled. "That's not a normal storm."

?

The Disturbance

They reached a ridge overlooking a valley.

What should have been clear air shimmered with distortions — ripples of magic twisting through the wind.

Suddenly, a blast of force shot from the clouds and struck the ground nearby, scattering trees like blades of grass.

Cindy and Puff dove for cover, her wings flaring instinctively.

"Wind Barrier!" she shouted.

A sphere of transparent air enveloped them, deflecting debris.

When the dust settled, a silhouette floated in the distance — tall, cloaked in black, with glowing crimson eyes beneath a hood.

Puff growled. "Well... that's not friendly."

Cindy's heart raced. "Someone's here."

?

The Hunter's Approach

The figure stepped forward slowly, staff in hand.

The air around him pulsed with corrupted wind — sharp, cold, unnatural.

A voice echoed, calm and calculating.

"So the rumor was true... a spirit walking the mortal lands."

Cindy's wings folded slightly. "I'm not a spirit," she said, her voice trembling but steady. "I just want to be left alone."

"A spirit who speaks with emotion. Fascinating. Your mana signature matches that of the Wind's Heart ruins. Tell me, little one..."

"How did a lesser creature steal the blessing of the spirits?"

Puff stepped in front of her, fur bristling. "Watch your mouth, creep."

The mage raised a hand. "A talking beast. How quaint."

Cindy clenched her fists. "I didn't steal anything! The ruins... they chose me."

The mage tilted his head, intrigued.

"Then I shall take you instead. The Guild will pay handsomely for a spirit core that powerful."

?

Battle of Wind and Storm

He thrust his staff forward.

A spiral of dark air formed — slicing the ground as it flew toward them.

"Move!" Puff shouted, leaping aside.

Cindy's instincts took over. Her wings glowed bright as she countered, "Wind's Blessing — Gale Surge!"

The two forces collided midair — light against darkness — and exploded in a shockwave that rippled through the valley.

Puff landed beside her, breathing hard. "He's strong!"

Cindy's eyes narrowed. "Then so am I."

She raised her hands, and a swirl of gentle wind gathered around her — glowing white-blue.

The breeze that once comforted now sharpened into blades of air.

"Dancing Feathers!"

Hundreds of translucent petals flew forward, cutting through the corrupted wind and striking the mage's cloak. He shielded himself, growling.

"Impressive... for something so small."

Lightning began to crackle in his palm. "Let's see how long your kindness lasts."

?

The Mage's Power

He slammed his staff into the ground.

Dark clouds descended, and a vortex of lightning spiraled toward her.

Cindy flinched but stood firm, her wings spreading wide.

"Puff!"

"On it!" Puff leapt into the storm, his telepathy echoing in her mind.

Distract him. I'll go for his staff.

Cindy nodded, channeling mana into her wings.

"Wind Barrier – Phase Shift!"

The air shimmered, bending the lightning around her like water. She dashed through the gaps, moving faster than sight.

For a moment, even the mage looked startled.

"So you are one of them..."

Then Puff struck — biting the staff's base and pulling with all his strength. The mage staggered, and Cindy took the chance.

She raised her hand, summoning a small sphere of glowing air — calm yet fierce.

"Spirit's Pulse!"

The orb shot forward and burst against the mage's chest, sending him flying back into a tree with a violent crash.

?

Aftermath

The storm scattered. The air grew still once more.

Cindy hovered, panting softly, wings trembling.

Puff bounded back to her side, his fur singed but eyes bright. "Nice shot."

She exhaled. "Thanks... I didn't mean to hurt him that badly."

From the fallen mage's cloak, faint dark mana seeped into the ground — disappearing as if swallowed by the earth.

Puff frowned. "He vanished..."

Cindy looked around uneasily. "No... something took him."

The wind whispered through the valley, carrying faint words that made her heart tighten.

"You cannot run forever, Healer of Winds..."

Cindy shivered.

Whatever that man was, he wasn't working alone.

The sky began to clear, sunlight breaking through the storm clouds.

Cindy looked down at her hands, the faint glow still lingering.

"I thought the wind's blessing would make me safer," she whispered. "But now it's just made me easier to find."

Puff nudged her gently. "Maybe. But it also made you stronger — and you're not alone."

Cindy smiled weakly. "Yeah... not alone."

She looked up, wings catching the sunlight once more.

Somewhere beyond the horizon, danger waited — but so did answers.

And she wasn't about to stop now.
