Volume 1 Chapter 28 - Quiet Goodbyes

Morning sunlight spilled gently through the open window of Cindy's small attic room. Dust motes danced like tiny stars in the air, and the faint hum of life in the village below filtered in — merchants calling, children laughing, and the rhythmic sound of blacksmith hammers in the distance.

Cindy tied the ribbon around her small traveling pouch.

Inside were only a few things — dried fruit, a folded handkerchief, and the sealed letter from the Adventurer's Guild.

Puff hovered beside her shoulder, wings shimmering faintly.

"Are we really leaving today?" he asked, voice soft.

Cindy smiled faintly. "Mm. It's time."

The room fell quiet for a moment. They had stayed in Velna for several days since Seren's visit — resting, healing, and learning what peace could feel like.

But the world outside called, and the road to Aelbourne awaited.

?

At the Village Square

The marketplace was lively, as always. But this morning, familiar faces greeted her with unusual warmth.

The baker waved first. "Miss Cindy! Leaving already?"

Cindy nodded, smiling. "Yes. The Guild in Aelbourne requested to meet me."

The baker's wife came running out, holding a small paper-wrapped bundle. "Then take this. Honey bread — fresh this morning. For the road!"

Cindy's eyes softened. "Thank you. I'll treasure it."

As she accepted the bread, she felt a tug on her sleeve. A small boy — the one she had healed days ago — looked up with wide, bright eyes.

"You're really going?" he asked.

Cindy knelt, her small, butterfly-like form almost glowing in the sun. "Yes. But I'll come back when I can. And you'll be strong by then, right?"

He nodded eagerly. "I'll train! I'll be an adventurer like you!"

Puff puffed out his chest. "Then make sure you eat your vegetables first!"

The boy giggled. "Yes, Mister Puff!"

The laughter drew a few more villagers over — a circle of faces filled with gratitude and affection. None of them knew exactly who or what she was, but all of them felt the same: the gentle wind that once swept through Velna had changed their lives, even for a short while.

A Visit to the Hill

Before leaving, Cindy walked up the gentle slope beyond the village — the same hill where she first practiced her wind magic weeks ago.

The grass swayed in rhythmic waves, and wildflowers bloomed freely.

Puff fluttered beside her, silent for once.

She stood at the top and closed her eyes.

The wind brushed her cheeks like an old friend.

"So many places to go," she whispered. "But I'll miss this one."

Puff nodded. "It's been our first home."

A soft voice echoed within her — not a person, but the world itself.

"The wind remembers kindness."

Her heart tightened. It was as though the land itself was blessing her journey.

?

Farewell Gift

As they turned to leave, a voice called from behind.

"Wait!"

It was Seren, the Guild envoy. He approached carrying a small satchel.

"I thought you might leave quietly," he said, slightly out of breath. "I wanted to give you this before you disappear again."

Cindy tilted her head. "What is it?"

He handed her a pendant shaped like a silver feather.

"It's a Guild charm. It will identify you as an ally — and it can hold a single spell's worth of mana, to be used in emergencies. Think of it as protection."

Cindy accepted it carefully, the feather glinting softly in the sun. "Thank you, Seren. I'll keep it safe."

He smiled, looking genuinely moved. "The world could use more people like you, Cindy."

She chuckled lightly. "I'm just doing what feels right."

Puff added with a smirk, "And what feels right usually ends with monsters getting kicked."

Seren laughed. "Then may your kicks continue to serve justice."

Leaving Velna

By the time they reached the edge of town, the sun had dipped lower in the sky.

Cindy turned for one last look.

The village shimmered in golden light — peaceful, warm, alive.

"Goodbye, Velna," she whispered.

Puff flapped his wings. "Ready?"

She smiled, holding the honey bread close. "Ready."

And together, the butterfly and her companion took flight toward the horizon — wings glinting under the fading sun, carrying with them the quiet blessings of those they'd touched.
