Volume 1 Chapter 42 - Dream of the Four Spirits

The city slept beneath the silver glow of the moon. Clouds drifted lazily over the capital's rooftops, their shadows stretching across the cobbled streets like drifting veils of mist.

Cindy and Puff had just finished their patrol assignment from the guild. It was a quiet night, but somehow the silence felt... heavier than usual.

Puff yawned, rubbing his eyes. "Another night, another empty patrol. At least no more fire serpents."

Cindy smiled faintly, though her eyes remained distant. "It's too quiet, Puff. The air feels... strange. Like something's watching us."

The Encounter

They turned a corner near one of the old temples — a place once dedicated to the elemental spirits. There, beneath a flickering lantern, a figure stood waiting.

Cloaked in black, with a faint crimson glow under the hood, the stranger seemed almost part of the night itself.

Puff tensed immediately. "You again..."

Cindy's heart skipped. It was him — the cloaked man who had marked her wrist.

"You've been searching for answers," the man said softly, his voice calm but echoing faintly, as if layered over another tone. "Tonight, you shall receive them."

Cindy stepped forward cautiously. "What do you mean?"

The man raised a single gloved hand and pointed at her mark.

"Listen to the call. The seal has begun to awaken."

Before she could respond, a faint glow spread from her wrist, pulsing outward like ripples in water. Her surroundings blurred — the city dissolving into light.

"Cindy!" Puff shouted, but his voice faded into the distance.

Then everything went dark.

The Dream Realm

Cindy opened her eyes to find herself standing in a vast, endless field of silver mist. The air shimmered with power — timeless and alive.

In the distance, four colossal silhouettes rose against the horizon, each glowing with its own color: red, blue, green, and gold.

Her mark burned faintly.

The mist parted.

The Four Elemental Beings

First came the fire.

A crimson dragon coiled in the air, scales glowing like molten metal. Each beat of its wings sent sparks raining down across the void. Its eyes blazed with the fury of creation and destruction — the embodiment of passion and will.

"I am Ignis, Flame of Rebirth. The fire that destroys... and begins anew."

Next, the water.

From the depths rose a massive turtle, its shell a swirling ocean reflecting stars. Rivers and tides flowed from its limbs, its deep voice rumbling through the mist.

"I am Undara, the Endless Current. I flow where the world breathes, and I remember what time forgets."

Then, the earth.

The ground trembled as a titanic bull emerged, its hide formed of living stone, eyes glowing green with ancient wisdom. Grass and crystals grew where its hooves struck the ground.

"I am Terranox, the Enduring Root. I bear the weight of all things that live."

And finally... the wind.

A gentle light surrounded Cindy herself — her form shimmering, wings spreading in a cascade of silver-blue feathers. The air danced around her, soft yet infinite.

"I am..." she whispered.

The others turned their gaze upon her.

"Zephyria," the dragon rumbled, voice like thunder over flame. "The spirit of wind reborn. You are the youngest of us, the wandering breath of life."

Cindy's breath caught. "Zephyria..."

"You carry our balance within your wings," spoke the turtle. "The cycle of the four must remain unbroken, or this world shall fall to shadow once more."

The bull lowered its great head. "The Order of Embers seeks to shatter the cycle — to awaken the lost flame and burn the rest away. You must remember who you are, child of wind."

?

The Warning

The light around her flickered. The mist trembled — ripples of red seeping through it.

The dragon raised its head, roaring. "He comes."

Cindy turned — and from the darkness beyond the mist, a crimson portal opened, swallowing the edges of the vision. Within it stood the cloaked man, his presence twisting the air.

"The spirits reveal themselves at last," his voice echoed, warped and distant. "The wind awakens... soon the fire shall rise."

The world cracked like glass.

Cindy screamed as the light collapsed, the four beings fading into mist.

Return to Reality

She gasped awake, sitting upright. She was back in her small inn room in the capital — Puff standing beside her bed, worry etched across his face.

"Cindy! You were glowing again — I couldn't wake you!"

She pressed a trembling hand against her chest. "I... I saw them. The Four."

Puff blinked. "Four?"

"The spirits of flame, water, earth, and wind. The fire was a red dragon. The wind was me."

Her eyes widened slightly, realization dawning. "They called me Zephyria."

Puff's ears drooped. "That... sounds important. Also, kinda terrifying."

Cindy managed a weak smile. "It was. But they warned me — the Order of Embers wants to break the balance of the four."

Puff crossed his arms. "Then we can't let that happen."

She looked out the window, where the first light of dawn painted the rooftops in gold.

"No," she whispered softly. "We can't. Because if they do... everything will burn."
