Volume 2 Chapter 23 - Ashes and Whispers

Morning came to Aerith Vale, but the scent of smoke still lingered.

The sun rose weakly through a haze of ash, painting the valley in dull amber tones. The wind carried faint embers that refused to die — stubborn remnants of the night before.

Cindy stood by the western wall, her staff pressed into the scorched ground. Around her were the charred remains of the corrupted monsters, their twisted shapes now reduced to ash and black crystal shards.

Puff floated near her shoulder, arms crossed and expression wary.

"I don't like this," he muttered. "Even after they're gone, their mana feels... wrong."

Cindy nodded. "It's unstable. There's something binding their essence together — something not of this plane."

She knelt, touching one of the black fragments. The air rippled.

"Appraisal."

[Appraisal Result]

Item: Charred Mana Core (Corrupted)

Origin: Fire Spirit Essence

State: Incomplete Fragment

Note: Contains traces of divinity. This is not the flame of nature — it's the flame of destruction.

Cindy's breath caught. "Divinity...?"

Puff tilted his head. "So, these monsters weren't just magic experiments. They were made using a god's essence?"

Cindy nodded slowly. "Or a Primordial Spirit's. Ignis..."

?

The Burnt Grove

They followed the trail of destruction into the forest. Trees stood half-melted, their trunks black and brittle. Even the ground pulsed faintly with leftover heat.

Cindy's wings glowed faintly as she cast Purify Air. The oppressive energy lightened, though only slightly.

"Whatever spell they used, it was meant to taint the land," she murmured. "Look— even the soil's mana flow has changed direction. It's being pulled westward."

Puff crouched, sniffing the air. "Like something's feeding on it."

"Exactly." Cindy raised her staff and closed her eyes, feeling the mana streams through the ground. Her perception spread like a ripple — and deep beneath the surface, she sensed it: a burning pulse, rhythmic and alive.

"...There's a ley line under Aerith Vale," she whispered, "and something's corrupting it."

?

The Hidden Sigil

A faint glimmer caught her attention among the ashes — a mark scorched into the soil, nearly invisible.

She brushed the dirt aside and froze.

It was a flame-shaped sigil, written in ancient runic script.

"Puff," she said quietly, "this isn't ordinary magic."

He hovered closer. "What is it?"

"A Summoning Seal... but it's incomplete. Someone was trying to anchor a connection to the Fire Spirit's domain — right here."

Puff's eyes widened. "You mean they were trying to bring Ignis into this world?"

Cindy shook her head. "Not yet. But they're building toward it. These corrupted creatures were probably test subjects — to see if mortal mana could hold divine flame without burning out."

?

The Shard of Crimson Flame

As she examined the sigil further, a faint glow pulsed from its center. Cindy carefully reached out — and lifted a shard of glowing red crystal from the ashes.

It pulsed like a heartbeat.

For a brief moment, a whisper echoed in her mind:

"The wind cannot snuff out eternal flame."

She gasped, nearly dropping it. The shard's warmth seeped into her palm, neither burning nor comforting — simply alive.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered.

Puff shook his head. "Hear what?"

She looked down at the shard again, her eyes narrowing. "It spoke to me... like a memory left behind."

Her Appraisal flickered.

[Appraisal Result]

Item: Crimson Flame Shard

Origin: Fragment of Ignis' Spirit Flame

Warning: Unstable divine residue. Exposure may cause fire affinity corruption.

She quickly sealed it inside a mana container. "We'll take this back to the guild's alchemist for analysis."

Puff nodded, ears twitching. "Do you think the guildmaster already knows something?"

Cindy looked to the west, where faint red light shimmered along the mountain range.

"I think he knows something is awakening. But even he doesn't realize how close it is."

?

Return to Aerith Vale

As they returned to the fiefdom, the villagers bowed deeply to them — gratitude in their eyes, but fear too. The people whispered of "monsters made of fire" and "shadows that burned."

Cindy smiled gently to calm them. "The walls are strong, and the spirits watch over us. Aerith Vale will not fall."

But inside, she felt the growing heat beneath the earth — a silent heartbeat waiting to erupt.

That night, while the Vale slept, Cindy stood at her window again, holding the sealed shard in her hand. The faint red glow pulsed through the container, flickering like a heartbeat.

"Terranox awakened through the earth's pulse..." she murmured. "If Ignis stirs through fire, then the world is beginning to balance — or break."

The shard pulsed once more, and this time she heard a faint echo in her mind — a whisper of flame.

"Soon... the wind shall meet the fire."

The night air grew warmer. Cindy closed her hand tightly around the shard.

"...Then I'll be ready."
