Chapter Four #3
“Kill him?” The pitch of her voice shot up and she shook her head violently. “No, I can’t… I won’t do anything to…”
Her sentence trailed off and the air was filled with silence as we watched one another, calculating the others’ reaction. I was serious and the gulp in her throat told me she knew.
“And what exactly do you want from me?” I said coldly, determined to make her feel uncomfortable.
Taking a deep breath, she moved away and got to her feet, looking down at me. Oh no, I wasn’t going to let her try to intimidate me. I pushed myself up into a stand, smiling when her head slowly bent back to look up at me.
“Because know this…” I went on when she didn’t immediately reply.
“…I will kill him… and the elders… and even…” Stepping forward, I backed her up until she knocked into the bed and fell back, landing softly.
I moved to stand with my legs either side of hers as she looked up at me from where she lay on the bed. “…you.”
Her eyes widened and she held out a defensive hand. “Now wait.”
Something about her casual attitude, ever since she’d walked in, fired my belly and I dropped down, my hands holding my weight on either side of her arms. “No, I won’t wait. You kidnapped me at my most vulnerable and brought me back to hell. You’re a demon and you need to be killed.”
She whimpered as I licked the tip of her nose and smiled manically. A zip of revenge excitement zipped through me, tingling my skin. We had taken revenge on those who had been kicked out of the compound, slowly finding them and either ruining their lives, or taking them out altogether.
“Did you really think you could come and play nice by stitching me up?” I spat, my arms hot from the anger that seared my insides.
Brit placed her hands on my chest and tried to heave me off, but I stayed firm, pushing my weight down until she winced and dropped her arms again. Her brow was furrowed and her brown eyes creased at the corners.
“I… I wanted to… I had to find a way to get him to listen, to stop humiliating me…” Her voice was shaky. “He hates you guys so much, I thought he’d be grateful… I mean…”
My voice rumbled deep in my chest and I reached for her chin, gripping it tight. She tried to pull away and yelped, wrapping her hands around my wrist. I noticed the blue bruise right where I held her.
“I hurt you when I crashed the car...” My sentence trailed off and the heat that had burned me lessened.
She tried to shake her head. “No, not there, anyway.”
“Someone did this to you?” The heat returned, although for a completely different reason.
Her eyes closed and she swallowed without replying.
“Who did this to you?” My voice was gruff as I lifted her chin and inspected the finger marks, right where mine had just been.
Brit looked me in the eyes, her voice a monotone. “The very person I was trying to appease.”
Groaning in frustration, I shoved off her and stood, limping over to the window.
I wanted to hurt her badly but seeing how he still treated her had stopped me.
She didn’t deserve my pity, she deserved my vengeance.
And yet, I had no weapons or backup – and there was something about using my bare hands on her throat that gave me pause – just for now.
“I can set you free,” I said, looking over my shoulder. “You can escape with me.”
She was on her feet, backing towards the door.
My threat had been understood, which was a good thing.
I didn’t want her to think that I was soft, although I was starting to think it myself.
Ant would’ve happily disposed of her and allowed her friends to find her while he escaped. Why had I held back?
“I don’t want to escape.” Wringing her hands in front of her, she shrugged. “I just want to be the heir I’m destined to be. My father’s approval will stop him from using me to make himself look better. I aim to be the best Reason once he’s gone.”
The switch flipped and I was across the room, shoving her against the wall before she could blink. She cried out as my hand wrapped around her throat, the anger of her ignorance firing my muscles.
“Wait,” she squeaked through the tiny gap I’d left her, “I can offer you something. The thing you want most.”
My eyes narrowing on her, I tilted my head to the side, ignoring the throb of my leg as my fingers formed a necklace around her pretty throat. “I’m not interested.”
“Chad,” she whispered on the last breeze of her breath, “I’ll let you get close to him or hurt him or whatever.”
Her eyes fluttered closed and I dropped her, stepping back as she slumped to the floor.
So when her life was in danger, she was happy to give up daddio?
Could I trust the vixen? She was a fucking menace.
I’d imagined that she wanted to get away from the compound, using me to bargain with daddy to set her free, but no…
she wanted to be top dog and she was willing to give him up to do it.
Could I be her accomplice? Hell fucking yes, I was ready for a kill, even if it meant that our plan had to be amended. As long as Chad Murray was dead, I would be happy.
