Chapter 7 The Man Who Comes Home #2
Adrian looked at him.
"You don't know."
Riley didn't defend himself.
"You're right."
Adrian looked away again.
The honesty helped.
He didn't need Riley to pretend he understood the details.
He needed him to stay.
So Riley stayed.
Minutes passed.
Adrian's breathing slowly changed.
The tension in his shoulders eased slightly.
Then, without consciously deciding to, Adrian leaned sideways.
His shoulder touched Riley's.
Riley remained still.
Adrian leaned a little more.
His head eventually rested against Riley's shoulder.
The position felt strangely natural.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Riley's warmth surrounded him.
For the first time since leaving the hospital, Adrian didn't feel like he needed to hold himself together.
He simply breathed.
Riley's hand rested on the sofa beside Adrian.
Not touching him.
Giving him the choice.
Adrian noticed.
He moved his hand closer.
Their fingers brushed.
Neither pulled away.
Riley slowly turned his hand so their palms touched.
Adrian looked down.
Their fingers intertwined.
The gesture was simple.
Yet it felt more intimate than anything they had shared.
Adrian looked at Riley.
Riley was already watching him.
Their faces were closer than Adrian realized.
Neither spoke.
Adrian could see the small details of Riley's expression.
The softness in his eyes.
The slight curve of his mouth.
The warmth that always seemed to follow him.
Adrian's heart began beating faster.
He didn't move away.
Neither did Riley.
Adrian leaned closer.
Only slightly.
Riley's breath caught.
Adrian could feel it.
He looked at Riley's mouth.
Then back into his eyes.
He wanted to kiss him.
The realization was immediate.
Terrifying.
Clear.
Adrian moved closer.
Their faces were only inches apart.
Then he stopped.
He pulled back.
Riley didn't move.
The silence between them became heavy.
Adrian released his hand.
"I'm sorry."
Riley's expression softened.
"For what?"
"I shouldn't have."
"Why?"
Adrian looked away.
"Because I don't know what happens after that."
Riley waited.
"If I kiss you," Adrian continued, "then this isn't friendship anymore."
Riley's voice was gentle.
"Maybe it hasn't been for a while."
Adrian looked at him.
Riley didn't smile.
He wasn't teasing.
He was simply telling the truth.
Adrian stood.
He walked toward the window.
Outside, the city lights blurred against the glass.
"I've spent my entire life knowing where the lines are."
Riley remained on the sofa.
"And now?"
"I don't know where they are with you."
Riley stood.
He walked toward Adrian but stopped several feet away.
"You don't have to know everything tonight."
Adrian looked at him.
"I don't want to hurt you."
"You haven't."
"I could."
"You could."
Riley's honesty surprised him.
"Then why are you still here?"
Riley's expression softened.
"Because I want to be."
Adrian looked down.
He didn't know what to do with that.
He had spent years believing that relationships required certainty.
But Riley wasn't asking for certainty.
He was asking for honesty.
Adrian took a slow breath.
"I wanted to kiss you."
Riley's eyes softened.
"I know."
Adrian looked at him.
"I was going to."
"I know."
"I stopped."
"I know."
Adrian gave a small, frustrated laugh.
"You keep saying that."
Riley smiled.
"Because I was there."
Adrian looked at him for several seconds.
Then he said the thing that frightened him most.
"I still want to."
Riley stepped closer.
"You don't have to be afraid of that."
Adrian searched his face.
"How long?"
Riley's expression became vulnerable.
"How long what?"
"How long have you wanted this?"
Riley looked down.
Then back at him.
"Longer than you know."
Adrian's chest tightened.
"Riley."
"I didn't expect you to feel the same."
"You didn't?"
Riley smiled sadly.
"I hoped."
Adrian moved closer.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't want to lose you."
Adrian's eyes softened.
"You wouldn't have."
"I couldn't know that."
Adrian reached for his hand.
This time, he didn't hesitate.
Riley's fingers curled around his.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For making you wait."
Riley's eyes glistened.
"You didn't know."
"I should have."
"You were busy surviving."
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
The words hurt because they were true.
When he opened them again, Riley was still there.
Still waiting.
Still giving him the choice.
Adrian stepped closer.
Their hands remained joined.
He could hear his own heartbeat.
He leaned toward Riley again.
This time, he didn't stop.
Their foreheads touched.
Neither kissed the other.
Not yet.
They simply stood there, close enough to feel each other's breathing.
Adrian smiled faintly.
"I think I'm still scared."
Riley smiled back.
"That's okay."
"You're not?"
"I've been scared for years."
Adrian's expression softened.
"Then maybe we can be scared together."
Riley's eyes filled with warmth.
"Maybe we can."
Adrian squeezed his hand.
He still didn't know what tomorrow would bring.
He didn't know how this would change their friendship, their home, or the careful boundaries he had built around his life.
But for the first time, he wasn't trying to solve the future.
He was simply standing beside the person he wanted.
And Riley, who had spent years waiting for Adrian to notice what his heart had already known, finally understood that the waiting might be over.
Adrian looked at him.
"I wanted to kiss you."
Riley smiled softly.
"I've been waiting for you to realize it."
Adrian laughed under his breath.
Then he leaned closer again, no longer running from the feeling that had been quietly growing between them.
This time, there was no need to pretend it was only friendship.
