Chapter 47 February – Winter Olympics

Wengen, Switzerland (Downhill & Combined)

Thomas: “The Lauberhorn — the longest race on tour. Over two minutes in a squat position. You′re welcome to try.

Katharina: “The train to the start gate takes longer than some races.”

Kitzbühel, Austria (Downhill, Super-G, Slalom)

Thomas: “The Streif. The scariest downhill in the world. Win here, you’re a legend.”

Katharina: “Also, the wildest afterparty. Imagine tuxedos, champagne, and sore knees.”

Schladming, Austria (Night Slalom and Giant Slalom)

Katharina: “Floodlights, fireworks, and 40,000 fans screaming into the night.”

Thomas: “One word: chaos. In the best way.”

February – Winter Olympics (Italy)

Katharina: “Every four years, the circus gets even louder. Flags, anthems, and no way to hide from the cameras.”

Thomas: “Races on the legendary Saslong in Val Gardena and the Gran Risa in Alta Badia. Same tracks as the World Cup, but with five times the pressure.”

Katharina: “And medals that change lives.”

Thomas: “Or break them.”

March – Season Finale Stretch

Hinterstoder, Austria (Downhill)

Katharina: “Technically, the snow here would be mush or non-existent by March— they usually race in February. But it’s one of our author′s favorite venues, so it stayed in our story.”

Thomas: “Good call. Hinterstoder’s got character — rolling terrain, big rhythm changes, and crowds that treat it like a festival.”

Kranjska Gora, Slovenia (GS & Slalom)

Katharina: “Pretty little village, deceptively tough hill.”

Thomas: “By then, everyone’s tired, sore, and counting points.”

Saalbach, Austria (World Cup Finals)

Thomas: “The whole circus ends here. Every discipline in one week, and only the best qualify.”

Katharina: “Which means small fields, men and women on the same hill, side by side. Titles, globes, heartbreaks. All of it packed into the final week.”
