29. Mia #2

With Lucie down the hall and we hear a door close, Jensen nudges me with her elbows. “So, tell me, are you good?”

My eyebrows pull together. “Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”

Is she seeing something I’m not? Has Adam told Beck something’s off? My stomach turns in knots.

“No, you can be. I thought you were. Lucie is one of my favorite people ever, but you know me better than her, so I just wanted to double-check. That’s all. Wanted to make sure the cat thing wasn’t a cry for help.”

The knot undoes a little but not entirely. “No, I honestly think pregnancy is making me a little softer. And with everything that happened in the beginning… I don’t know. I feel really good, and somehow like I should be waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

“I hear you. Unfortunately, I think life has a lot of shoes in its closet. But you and Adam seem more than equipped to handle them together.”

I let the knot fully go with that one, and Jensen adds on.

“But the girls are here for you, too. I’ve already helped Lucie shave her legs. I’ll come help you too, just call.”

I let out a very freeing laugh. I might not have a lifelong best friend, but having these girls now—I don’t care that much about it anymore.

After a few minutes, Lucie makes her way back to the living room and eases back on the couch with a huff. “Okay, done.”

“Miles all good?” I ask.

“Yeah, Dex’s parents actually just moved into an apartment in our building because we’re going to need so much help this season with Miles and the twins. They’re always down to babysit, and if I do happen to go into labor while Dex is gone, at least they’re just a few floors down to help.”

Oh yeah, that’s another win for my list. With my due date being after the postseason, we really shouldn’t have much scheduling conflict to work around. That is unless the baby decides to come early and the guys are still in the postseason.

Wouldn’t that be something? Adam leaving the World Series to have a baby. With how everything has unfolded since we’ve gotten together, I can’t say it would surprise me.

“I’m sure my mother will be beating down our front door, but I couldn’t move her in—she’d drive me nuts.”

Lucie laughs. “Yeah, I personally love having them close. Like tonight, they jumped on watching Miles so quick that I didn’t even feel guilty for asking. They drive Dex a little crazy sometimes, but if it were my mom or dad in the building I’d feel the same way.”

“If Beck and I decide to adopt, we’d definitely call his dad during the season. Beck would also lose his mind, but his dad is the best, so there’s no real argument.”

“I could make plenty of arguments for my mother, but she wouldn’t listen to them.” I take another sip of my drink. “Sort of thinking I might lock me, Adam, and the baby in the house for as long as possible.”

“Ooo, ooo, have you thought of baby names yet?” Lucie beams. “Sorry, random, but with you listing the family out, I had to ask.”

I let out a heavy sigh. “When I tell you I’ve had the most self-control I’ve ever had in my life, trust me, it’s this—”

Jensen cuts me off. “Well, you did get pregnant and married in a month, so I think the bar was a little low on the self-control front already, Mia.”

I give her a glare. “Maybe so, but…I mean—need I point it out again—it’s with Adam.”

Jensen puts a hand on my knee. “I know, I know, I was teasing. I’m sorry I interrupted.”

“Anyway, to cut the story short, we haven’t really looked at baby names.

Adam asked if I wanted to talk about them one morning, but I think I need to wait until I know what we’re having first. I don’t want to get attached to two names or I really might start talking about having another… and that might truly freak Adam out.”

Lucie nods along with a chuckle. “Again, I don’t think he’d freak about anything, but I get that. It took us a while to land on names, but that part is really fun. I’m excited for you guys.”

“Thank you.” My shoulders fall. “I’m excited, too. We should find out next week. I don’t think either of us is leaning any sort of way as far as guessing. We looked up some of those old wives’ tales, but it was pretty evenly split.”

Jensen leans to the side and digs out her phone. “Oh, don’t you worry, the rest of us have a pool going.”

“You what?”

“A betting pool, duh. So, me, Lucie, Will, Emma, and Beck think it’s a girl. Callie, Dex, Tripp, and Olsson are thinking boy.”

“Olsson? Like, Coach Olsson?” I can’t believe they’re betting on the gender of our baby. “Does Adam know about this?”

Jensen smiles. “He knows. He didn’t bet, but this is like the third time they’ve had a pool going. After this one, I think we’re going in on Tripp and Emma.”

I huff a laugh. “I doubt Olsson will participate in that one.”

Lucie hums as she weighs her head back and forth. “I think he’s Team Tripp. I’ve never seen him even remotely uncomfortable with their dynamic. I mean, he hired her knowing she’d be around even more with Tripp on the team.”

“Wouldn’t it be crazy if he was the one who finally got them together?”

“Someone’s gotta do it.” Jensen drops her phone on her lap. “Okay, we’ve got to focus, we’re missing asses in baseball pants.”
