“I’m sorry for just dropping by on you like this.” I sat down on the edge of the bed, wrapping my arms around myself. The last two weeks have been hard for me. I wanted to be around somebody who knew what I was going through. Reese took a seat, putting no space between us.
“Nah, I’m glad you did. How you been?”
“I haven’t slept,” I admitted. Since I got to my dad’s house, all he’s done is ask me questions, so I had to leave. I was tired of it.
“Yeah, I’ve been up too.”
Thinking about Sincere, I started choking up. “H-how could that happen? He was just right there.”
I didn’t know Sin’s intentions when his eyes went toward that gun. I thought he was gonna have a shootout with the police, or he was gone kill all of us. The last thing crossing my mind was Sin accidentally shooting himself.
“I know. That shit was crazy.” Reese put his hand on my thigh, rubbing his thumb in a circular motion.
“I keep seeing the look on his face when I realized what he did. I can’t close my eyes without thinking about it.” I blinked rapidly to get rid of the tears.
Reese turned his head to me.“You talk to somebody?”
“I’m talking to you,” I stated obviously.
“Nah, baby. A professional person,” he answered, licking his lips.
“No. My family keeps asking me what happened, but I’m not ready to talk about it. Who did you tell?”
“Raine thinks I shot him,” he confessed, and my eyebrows shot up.
“For real?”
“Yeah. Since I got home that night, she ain’t say shit to me.” Reese definitely didn’t shoot Sin and I’d hate for her to think he did.
“Want me to talk to her? I can probably help.”
His eyes roamed over my face. “I’d appreciate that.”
I touched the top of my bob. “I know I look tore up. I didn’t bother to put on makeup, because I’ve been crying nonstop. It would’ve been a waste of time.” Reese had an amused look on his face as I tried to explain.
“No need. You look better this way,” he stated, lying to me.
“Really?”
“Yeah. I like natural.” I blushed, and before the conversation could get too heated, I changed the subject.
“What were you doing before I came over?” Looking around, I noticed a lot of studio equipment. It’s just like him to bring his work to bed.
“Smoking.” He glanced down and my eyes followed.
A blunt was hanging off the side of a tray.
“Can I try it?” This was the best time as any to experiment. I never tried this before, not even in college, when all my friends were doing it. The only thing I ever really focused on was my education.
“You did it before?” I shook my head.
“No, but it ain’t like I got a job to get tested for it. Fire it up.” I watched Reese grab a lighter from the nightstand with a grin on my face.
I got put on leave from BCE pending an investigation into my relationship with Sincere, but if I’m being honest, I can’t go back there. When I told him this morning, my dad had a fit. I wasn’t too upset and figured maybe opening up my own law firm and work my own hours is a good thing.
“This the good shit. You don’t know about this,” he bragged, lighting it up.
I rolled my eyes with a smile. “Well, I’m tryna know.”
Reese laughed, holding it out for me to grab. “Okay, so put it to your lips, but take yo’ time with it.”
Eagerly, I did as he told me. I put it between two fingers like I see everybody else doing, put it into my mouth, and took a long pull. As soon as I felt the smoke go down my throat, I started coughing hard. Reese put his hand on my back to pat it.
“Damn, Ms. Lady. I said take yo’ time. You damn near swallowed the whole thing.”
“I was tryna do it like the pros do,” I replied with a pout.
Reese threw his head back in laughter. “You ain’t no damn pro, though. You gone mess around and lose a lung baby.”
I crossed my arms in a fit before he had me try again. We shared two blunts back-to-back. By the time we got the second one down, we were both high as hell. I never felt this damn good before, and I’m mad I didn’t try this sooner.
“So, he really just walked up and grabbed her?’ Reese was telling me how Sincere found his first girlfriend. From the way he spoke, you could tell he missed him.
“Yeah. Even back then, you couldn’t tell Sin nothing.”
“I can see that.” I crossed my legs on the bed, trying to keep my composure. Reese looked so sexy in his sweatpants and tank top. His dreads were hanging down as he laid on one elbow.
“I know you had all the girls back then too, huh?”
“Who, me?” He pointed to himself.
“Nah. That was always Sin’s thang, not mine.”
“Well, what’s your thang then?” I mimicked his voice.
“One woman is all I need.” Reese licked his lips, staring down at mine. I looked down at my hands in my lap to avoid his intense gaze.
Out of the corner of my eye, I watched him sit up. Reese’s arms stretched as he caressed the side of my face. My eyes fluttered closed, and, in an instant, he grabbed the back of my neck to bring his lips down on mine.
