Chapter 19
We didn't speak as we crossed from the cold of the terrace into the dimmed interior. The door swung closed behind us on a muffled pneumatic and left us standing at the juncture between the living room, a geometry of velvet chairs and mirror, and the corridor that led, always, to the bed.
My hand was still in his, my wrist bracketed by the careful pressure of his thumb, and as we walked the six steps into the next room, I cataloged the pressure points: where his palm lay over the fine bones of my wrist, where the tip of his thumb rested just at the radius, how his body moved in tandem with mine, never ahead, never lagging.
He released me at the foot of the bed.
There was no light in the room but the city's verticals, slicing pale blue through the double curtain and laying bars across the white sheets.
The linens were turned down, the navy blanket folded crisp at the foot, and the air held the faint mineral of the harbor from the open window and the scent of lemon soap from the evening's shower.
He said nothing. He stepped behind me, and with both hands, very gently, undid the single hair tie I'd knotted at the base of my neck.
My hair fell loose, its weight a thermal across my shoulders, and he ran his hand through it once, then gathered it in both hands and let it slide through his fingers.
I stood perfectly still, and let him catalog the weight of me.
Slow, I thought. He's going to take this slow.
He started with the sweater, both hands at the hem, lifting it a centimeter, then two.
He didn't rush. Each movement was measured as if it might be audited.
I raised my arms. The fabric came up, slow, the friction a warm drag against my skin.
He paused at the collar, then, with a small deliberate twist, freed it from the crown of my head and set it aside.
I wore nothing beneath but my own skin, bare from collarbone to waist, and the air off the harbor made my nipples harden before his hands even made contact.
He touched the left one, palm flat, then the right, tracing the areola with the pad of his thumb, as if to memorize the dimension. He didn't squeeze. He mapped.
He traced my ribs, the tips of his fingers in the shallow between each bone, down the ladder of my sternum and out to the perimeter, hands resting at the shelf of my hips.
He unbuttoned my jeans with a single motion, thumb and forefinger at the tab, then the slow diagonal unzipping that bared the line of my lower abdomen, a line I'd always wished were more curved, less stark, but that he seemed to appreciate for the fact of its existence.
He dropped to his knees.
Oh.
I wasn't expecting it, not with the deliberation he brought, but he knelt, and for a second all I could see was the top of his head, the wet line of his hair dividing the skull perfectly. He pressed his face to my stomach, mouth open, and inhaled, then let it out warm over my skin.
He drew the jeans down, not with both hands but one, the other bracing me by the right knee. The denim caught at the thigh, then the calf. I lifted each foot, as if for a fitting, and the jeans came away.
I wore nothing under.
He traced his fingers up the inside of my left shin, the arch of my foot to the ankle, then up to the hollow at the back of my knee. He pressed his mouth there, once, then worked his way up.
I felt the heat of his breath before his tongue. He parted my legs with his hands at the knees, spread me open, then used the side of his face, his cheek, the sharpness of his jaw, to nudge my right knee sideways, so that I straddled him, his mouth a single point of contact.
He licked, once, just at the outer edge.
Then again.
Then settled in.
I had never liked being gone down on, not in the usual way—too clinical, too brief, or, worst, too performative—but he didn't approach it as a favor or a script to be followed.
He did it like it was the only thing worth doing, the only job he'd ever wanted.
He licked up and down, slow, the tip of his tongue circling, not at the clit but around it, in tighter and tighter radii, until the sensation was so sharp it hurt.
He didn't speed up.
He set a pace and held it.
Christ.
He mapped me with his mouth the way he'd mapped me with his hands.
Attentive. Incremental. Each new motion designed to elicit a measurable reaction.
When I started to shake, he braced my hips, pinning me, and when I tried to step away, to delay, he looked up at me, and for the first time since Thursday I saw the full predatory intent of him.
He pressed his tongue flat against my clit, sucked hard, and I lost the world.
The orgasm wasn't chemical, not even electrical. It was as if the bandwidth of my body had been doubled, then tripled, with nowhere for the surplus to go but out. I arched, braced my hands on his shoulders, and let it burn through me.
I don't know what sound I made, if any.
He didn't stop. He kept sucking, kept circling, and when I tried to move, his hands at my hips held me so firm I thought I might bruise.
When it crested, and I sagged, he let go, stood, and caught me as I fell forward.
He guided me to the bed. The covers were cool, the air cold, but his body was so hot, so thoroughly alive, that I wanted nothing but to wrap every inch of myself around him. He lifted me onto the bed, one knee braced, the other supporting the weight of us both, and laid me flat against the linen.
I felt the wetness between my thighs, the residual tremor in my quadriceps, the exact print of his hands in every place they had held me.
He undressed with care. The sweater first, then the T-shirt, pulled overhead in a single movement, the hair underneath rumpled but not disordered.
The body was everything I'd predicted: arms cut but not theatrical, torso hard and long, the neck muscled from years of resisting the Gs.
The chest was flat, the nipples small and brown, the skin a collection of old bruises and newer scars, the most prominent a pale line that started at the collarbone and stopped at the sternum.
He removed the pants with less ceremony, but even then took the time to set them aside, not thrown, not careless. The underwear was navy, a small Portuguese maker, the label visible.
For a second, I was delighted by the ordinariness of it.
He stepped out of them, and his cock, long, straight, slightly curved at the tip, was already hard. The head pink, the shaft dark, a vein visible down the left side, and I wanted to taste it but didn't ask.
He crawled onto the bed, hands on either side of my head, body hovering above mine, and just looked at me for a full minute.
Look back.
I did.
He kissed me, and I tasted the echo of myself on his mouth.
He kissed down my neck, over the breast, tongue flicking at the left nipple, then the right, and when he bit—gentle, but decisive—it sent a shock straight to my core.
He kissed the undershelf of my breast, the line of my ribs, then up again, and at each interval made a point of looking at my face, reading the effect.
“You are perfect.”
I believed him, because he said it without any trace of uncertainty.
He spread my legs again, and this time entered me with one finger, slow. The pressure wasn't enough to hurt, but more than I'd expected, and when he curled it, he found the spot instantly. He worked it, slow, then faster, and I felt the next wave building before I was ready.
He stopped. He removed his hand, slick with me, and wiped it on the inside of my thigh.
He reached for the nightstand, the same brief practiced motion as at the penthouse, tore the foil with his teeth, rolled the condom on while my eyes followed the work of his hands.
Fuck.
He guided the head of his cock to the opening, pressed it against the entrance, then in, a centimeter, then out, then in again.
I was wet enough, more than enough, but the way he did it—incremental, data-driven, always calibrating—made me want to break the cycle, to demand more.
I tried to reach for him, to pull him in, but he held my wrist above my head, pinning it to the pillow.
“Let me.”
I did.
He pushed in, slow, letting the first two inches stretch me, then stopped. Waited. Kissed my mouth, my cheek, the side of my jaw.
“Please.”
He didn't smile, but pressed forward, filled me the rest of the way.
We stayed like that, not moving, just holding the position, the weight of him perfect, the stillness more erotic than any motion could have been.
Then he moved.
He fucked me with control, with a rhythm that seemed both unsustainable and inevitable.
He never broke eye contact. His hand, still at my wrist, held me in place, and the other braced against the bed.
His face above mine, close enough to see the dark in his eyes, the length of the lashes, the sweat starting at his temple.
He adjusted the angle, rocking his hips just so, and the friction was a slow burn, the head of his cock hitting exactly the spot the finger had mapped. It built, not like a wave but like an algorithm reaching the point of singularity: faster and faster, impossible to reverse.
“Look at me.”
I did.
He increased the pace, and the sound of our bodies was the only sound in the room. The slap of skin. The wet. The breathing. I felt the orgasm build, and I tried to hold it off, to delay, but he said, “Don't. Stay with me.”
I came again, this time so hard I felt the echo of it in my teeth. I tried to look away, to hide, but he forced my chin up, made me keep eye contact as I fell apart under him.
He didn't stop. He slowed, then resumed, and this time the friction was less and the sensation more.
I wrapped my legs around his waist, locked my ankles, and pulled him in as deep as he'd go.
He released my wrist, and I clung to his back, nails digging in.
He pressed his face to my neck, kissing, then biting, and I felt the tension in him, the climax approaching.
“I'm close.”
“I want you to.”
He groaned, a sound so animal I'd never have believed it of him.
He thrust, three times, then came, the pulse of him hot through the latex, the sensation perfect, and stayed inside, unmoving, for a full minute.
When he finally collapsed to my side, he pulled me with him, so we lay together, chest to chest, his hand at the small of my back, my face buried in his collarbone.
I heard his heart, the pace of it, slowing now, then stabilizing.
We didn't talk. I traced the line of his shoulder with my hand, felt the salt of sweat at his back, the mess between my legs.
I don't care.
The city outside had gone from blue to gold, then back to blue. The time was unmeasured. The only clock was the sound of his breath, the way it synced to mine.
After a while, he dealt with the condom, quiet and practiced, then came back to me.
At some point I said, “Can we go again?”
He laughed, a real laugh, and rolled me onto my back.
This time he was less careful, less deliberate, more greedy.
He bit, sucked, marked me with his mouth and hands, and when he put his tongue on me again, I came in under thirty seconds, the sensitivity so intense it bordered on pain.
He didn't stop until I was shaking, and when I tried to beg off, he said, “No. I want to see you lose it.”
He reached for the nightstand again, the foil louder this time in the quiet, the latex going on while I watched him from the pillow.
He entered me from behind, bracing my hips, harder and fuller than before, and fucked me until I screamed. He pulled me up, my back to his chest, and wrapped his arms around my torso, holding me there, fucking up into me until I shattered.
“I love you,” I said, the words raw.
He said it back, twice, once against my shoulder, once against my neck.
The third time, after he came again, he rolled me to face him, pressed his forehead to mine, and said, “Amo-te, querida,” so low I felt it in my bones.
Oh.
Oh.
There's only his weight. The heat of him. The wet of my own skin. The breath. His breath. Mine. Somewhere, breath. The pulse in my throat that is mine and the one against my temple that is his. Not a room. Not a city. Not a clock. Just this.
The light. There's a light somewhere. I don't look at it.
I'm crying. I don't know when I started.
He kisses the wet at my cheekbone and doesn't name it.
His hand was at the small of my back. My hair, damp and tangled, spread over his chest.
“Do you want to sleep?”
“Not yet.”
He stroked my back, up and down, the touch slow and constant. We watched the ceiling, the light from the city making a shifting pattern that moved with the wind.
“What happens now?”
He thought for a while, then: “The next race is in Baku. Two weeks.”
“Will I see you before then?”
He smiled, then kissed my hair. “If you want.”
“I do.”
“What about the story? Will you have to hide?”
I considered, then: “No. I don't want to hide anymore.”
He nodded, then: “Your father will be angry.”
“He'll be angry either way. I'd rather it be for something I wanted.”
He liked this answer. He didn't say it, but I felt the smile where his chin touched the crown of my head.
“Adrien?”
I shook my head. “Gone.”
He was quiet for a while, then: “I'm glad.”
I closed my eyes, listened to the sound of the city, the occasional echo from the Casino Square below.
“You know I'm in love with you, right?”
“Say it again.”
He rolled me so I was face to face with him, the dark of his eyes almost black.
“I love you.” Clear and precise, in English.
“Good.”
I put my head on his chest and let the air leave my body, all at once.
At one in the morning, I woke to the light of the city still on the ceiling, his hand still at my back, and the certainty, for the first time in my life, that everything I wanted was right here, in the aftermath of the possible.
I closed my eyes, and let myself sleep.
