Lines Blurred

The silence between them was suffocating, thick with everything left unspoken.

Celeste folded her arms, turning her gaze to the window, but the passing city lights barely registered. The only thing she was aware of was him—the weight of his presence pressing down on her, solid and inescapable.

Why now? Why was he doing this when I was finally ready to walk away?

Adrian exhaled sharply, gripping the wheel so tightly his knuckles went white. His entire body was wound tight, like he was fighting a battle within himself—one she wasn't sure she wanted to understand.

Minutes stretched on in thick, heavy quiet before the car turned into the long, familiar driveway.

Home.

Except it hadn't felt like home in a long time.

Adrian shifted the gear into park but made no move to get out. His hands remained locked around the wheel, his chest rising and falling in uneven breaths, like he was bracing himself for something.

Celeste didn't wait. She reached for the door handle, needing to put space between them, needing to breathe.

"Celeste."

Her name was barely more than a whisper, rough and unsteady.

She froze.

She shouldn't turn around. Shouldn't care.

But she did.

Slowly, hesitantly, she turned to face him.

And the look in his eyes nearly stole the air from her lungs.

The anger was gone. The frustration had burned out.

All that was left was exhaustion.

Not the kind that came from lack of sleep—but the kind that came from carrying something for too long.

Like there were words clawing at his throat that he didn't know how to say.

Like he was afraid to say them.

Celeste's fingers curled tighter around the handle.

No.

She couldn't do this.

Not now. Not when she had spent months convincing herself she was done.

Before he could say anything, she pushed the door open and stepped out, the cold night air biting at her skin.

She didn't look back.

But she didn't have to.

She could feel his gaze on her.

Like he wasn't ready to let go.

Like he never was.
