Chapter 3 #2

There’s no possible way I can fight in this state. My mind is telling me the one in the middle is the real vampire, but every time I turn my head, it’s like the one in the middle changes. What the hell did he do to me?

Multiple werewolves charge me and I try to move toward the one in the middle, but my hand goes through air an instant before I feel the werewolf slam into my back.

Teeth tear into the back of my neck, and I flip my sword around and thrust it up into the werewolf’s body.

It yelps and leaps away just as another one that I don’t see hits me.

It nearly knocks me to the ground as I try to drive the sword into it, but it’s realized that though I might not be able to see them, I can still hurt them if I can feel them, so it dashes back out of my reach.

I glance back at the car, but I can’t even tell where it is.

There’s no way I’m pulling Gustov out of this situation and running.

Truly, my only choice is to draw them away from him and run.

Hell, they might not even know the dog is in there, and even if they do, they have no reason to go for him when they obviously want me.

I bolt for the trees, knowing that if I go far enough that way, I’ll hit civilization where they’ll have to pull back. I just have to reach it before they destroy me.

“Where are you going?” the vampire asks with a laugh.

I hear movement, but the poison coursing through my body is making the noises bounce around me, so I can’t pinpoint where they are.

I jerk back, but they must have been waiting for me to do so because two more werewolves tear into me.

Each one grabs an arm and rips me back before I feel a blade against my neck.

Pain shoots through me as I feel blood pour from the wound across my throat.

I throw one of the wolves off and stab the other before it can retreat, but it doesn’t feel like a deep enough strike to keep it down for long. If there’s still poison left on this sword, it might affect them, though. Or does it only affect vampires?

With no other options, I run, knowing it’s all I can do in this state. My throat is healing, but it’s healing so slowly that I start to question if it’ll close up before I bleed out.

I move into the trees, but I soon discover that with my vision like this, I can’t even tell how to make it through them.

I know that if I can just get to the other side of this wooded area, someone will help me, but is that even possible?

Hell, the casino that Casimir owns isn’t far from here and is heavily frequented by vampires.

If I can make it there, they’ll have to back off.

My shoulder slams into a tree I didn’t even see, and I’m sent staggering around it while I try to hold my hand against the wound on my neck.

Someone is coming, so I spin to face them head-on and swing the sword through nothing but air.

A werewolf latches on to my hand, shaking its head so fast that I hear the bones in my hand break as the sword falls from my grip.

I kick the wolf hard but as it jerks back, it rips into my flesh.

“What the fuck do you want?” I ask, my throat healed enough I can talk, but I’m feeling weak from lack of blood. It seems to be worsening the effect of the poison.

The vampire scoffs. “I have no interest in talking to you. You are nothing more than bait. Your life has absolutely no significance to me. If you die here today, I’ll simply find someone else.”

“You think I’d die that easily?” I ask, backing up until I feel a tree behind me. Hastily, I slip around it and use my good hand to feel my way, but isn’t this just a joke? They’re toying with me at this point. How could they not be? I can’t even run. I can’t do anything.

It’s been a long time since I felt this weak.

Hell, I’m pretty sure only he makes me feel weak like this.

How funny to die like this. Not that anyone will exactly care that I’m dead, but hopefully at least one person notices. Maybe Julian will. But… will Atticus?

I can feel the brush of a werewolf just as it reaches me, and I snatch its leg and snap it.

I really am much too pretty to die. It’ll be such a disservice to the world for my life to end like this… mauled to death by werewolves… my hair a mess.

A moment of reprieve is all I’m given before three of the weres are on me at once. One rips into my leg while another goes for the back of my neck, driving me to the ground. I need to kill them… I need to…

I reach out, only able to drag myself a little as pain tears through me.

“Come on, now. We don’t want to kill him. I know he’s angered you, but you are trying to kill him,” the vampire says, and the werewolves scatter.

Desperately, I try to get to my feet, but I can’t even put my knees under me since everything hurts. My arms feel like they’ve been shredded open. My hand is plainly still broken, and I can feel every spot their teeth sank into me.

Suddenly, I hear barking right before I feel Gustov’s fluff as he stands over me and barks at the vampire.

“Please don’t hurt him,” I beg. “If you do, his owner will slaughter all of you. He’s not weak like I am.”

“Oh? Is Atticus his owner?” the vampire asks.

I don’t know what the man wants, but I don’t know how to answer him.

I feel him grab my foot and I want to shake him off, but I have no strength left in me as he drags me across the ground.

My head is spinning, the world crashing around me while I wander closer to death.

I feel like I can brush fingers with it at this point.

What a miserable way to end.
