Chapter 48
"Is that all you've got," I said spitting the blood from my mouth.
"Detective aren't you something. You don't bend or break easily do you?" Vance Marchetti questioned.
How many times had he hit me. I lost count when my head started spinning. He kept at it and I questioned if he really planned on killing me. Of course he did. I was an obstacle in his path for attaining Ivan.
"Detective Williams don't go easy on me. Are you falling unconscious. Look what happens when you touch what does not belong to you. I warned you did I not?" He asked rhetorically.
I hadn't bothered in answering him anytime he asked about Ivan.
What was I supposed to say to him. That I was in love with him and I knew this was a trap which I walked straight into.
How foolish was I. It had been days still no sign of Ivan.
I had placed my trust in him too much. I should have known.
People like him will do everything for their men but who was I to him.
I tricked him and stole his car. All for what, to close the case and finally get the truth on Mariya's kidnapping.
"Let me let you in to a little secret Williams. He came to me. About three days ago telling me he was wrong that a man like him can never be involved with someone like you. You tricked him and took advantage of him to rise into your career.
For him he wouldn't care if you died or lived it all meant the same thing," he said spiteful.
My eyes although swollen squinted to see him. The words might have been malicious to put me against Ivan but they hurt. I didn't give him the satisfaction of seeing the damage they did. Instead I laughed. Loud, unfiltered and wild.
"Who cares what he thinks of me, he is just a criminal and I am an officer of the law. We are so different. He brings terror into people's lives. I bring justice to liberate them. So forgive me if I don't give two shits what you two criminals think of me. You are best suited for each other.
A perfect match made in heaven," I retorted.
His smile widened and he sized me again and again.
"Very well Williams. If that is how you feel then I guess you won't mind if I show you this.
His phone dropped on my lap a CCTV footage playing.
There were two men who were talking. Adjusting my eyes to the sudden light in the dark room I saw him.
It was Ivan and Vance. Ivan grabbed Vance pulling him for a kiss his actions aggressive and passionate.
I shook in the chair I had been tied to trying to drop the phone. Vance grabbed it before it got the chance to hit the floor. Making sure my voice was steady before I spoke I lifted my head to the direction Vance stood.
"What gives you the impression that I'm interested in watching adult content that involves two criminals. That is not my type of kink. I'd rather watch two dogs go at it than this," I spat.
I should have been careful with my words but the feeling in my chest made me want to break something. Anger I have never felt ate at me clawing for a release. This is what Vance wanted to break me to see me more miserable.
I reigned myself to calm down taking deep breaths at a time. So what if Ivan didn't harbor any feelings for me. What right did I have to question who he slept with or not. Whether the footage was real or fake it should not have bothered me.
"Too bad you didn't get to see the most interesting part detective. He has quit the appetite. It took me a couple of days to walk to be able to come here and welcome you especially," he taunted.
The image of Ivan and Vance tangled up in sheets made the ache over my body feel numb compared to the one in my heart.
I couldn't breath my eyes started stinging.
I felt them before I even realized they had left my eyes.
He had betrayed me. Did what happened between us in his cabin in the woods not matter to him.
"There is something else you must know detective. Since I'm a man of honor and I wouldn't want anyone lying to you. I'll save you the misery of investigation. I know you are good at it but still you couldn't figure out his relationship with the raven haired girl."
At the mention of Mariya my heart skipped. She was just a child. He couldn't. He surely wouldn't.
"The girl is his sister!" He paused dramatically as if to let me digest all the possibilities I had come up with but none sufficed. His sister, it couldn't be there was not even a single bit of resemblance in the two.
"It gets better. You see the boy who is always around him. That's his brother too. You see the two, Ramon and Mariya they look alike but not with Ivan. They resemble their mother. Ivan took all his looks from his father," he explained.
"Did I give you the impression I was interested in learning Ivan's family tree?"
He chuckled pulling a chair that screeched across the room.
"You wound me detective!"
His phone rang interrupting what he had to say.
"Who let him escape? Find him and don't let him get anywhere in this room!" He shouted.
A warm feeling entered my heart and it flattered. It must be him. No one was capable of making Vance Marchetti lose his composure like Ivan did. He came for me. My deceitful heart wanted to believe it was indeed me he came for.
"He is here, isn't he?" I laughed. "I don't think I've seen you so alarmed before. Why are you scared?"
"Do you have any idea who you have been dealing with detective? That man is a monster. He'll make sure you regret ever meeting him," he replied angrily.
"Wasn't it you who was boasting about him being your lover. If he is then why would he hurt you? I should be the one cowering in fear. Not you," I replied.
He pulled out his gun and I felt it connect with my temple.
Before my eyes closed I saw him and probably even heard him.
"Kayde!"
