Chapter 64 Blaze
I sat in the bench seat, my head buzzing with confusion.
Midwife and Daisy? Together? And having a baby?
That wasn’t possible. We were still married.
She wouldn’t step out on me. It was one thing for me to have some fun, but Matchstick would have had a fit if they’d had any idea that Daisy was screwing someone other than me.
A woman stays inside the marriage, and a brother doesn’t touch what’s not his.
“I’ll fucking teach him a lesson,” I growled again, standing up.
“Sit the fuck down,” Bear snapped, watching me slowly comply. It wasn’t the first time he’d told me, and it wasn’t the first time I’d obeyed tonight. I sank back into the hard seat.
Horse hobbled his way over, giggling like a lunatic. Kids were hanging off him like monkeys, giggling just as much as he was. I was glad Dylan was with Shaquilla tonight. At least he wasn’t part of this circus.
I groaned, finally remembering my words to Daisy. You think it’s funny bringing an illegitimate child into our marriage? Shit, that’s exactly what I’d done. Only difference is, I was willing to give him up if Daiz said no. I dropped my head into my hands.
“What the fuck am I going to do, Bear?” I finally asked. “I don’t want to raise Midwife’s kid.”
Bear sneered at me. “Midwife is raising his own kid.” He took a swig of his beer as Horse gingerly slid into a seat, instead of flopping down like he usually did.
He grunted as he settled in, and then spoke breathlessly, “Didn’t Daisy say something about a divorce? Sounds like she prefers Midwife to you. At least he keeps it in his pants when she’s not looking.”
Bear glared at him, then shook his head. “Stay out of it, Horse,” he growled. “This is no laughing matter.”
“I’m not laughing. I’m pointing out the obvious. Daisy deserves someone who is as faithful to her, as he is to the club. If you hadn’t noticed, that’s Midwife, and she’s chosen to be his ol’lady.” Horse reached for my beer and grabbed it, taking a swig before Bear managed to grab it away from him.
“You’re still on painkillers. Stop this shit,” he told the young man.
Horse glared at him, then shrugged and turned his head to me.
“What’s your problem anyway? She’s been gone for over four years without any contact.
If it wasn’t for Matchstick dying, we’d probably still not know if she’s alive.
She could have been shacked up with a guy years ago, and you wouldn’t have known. ”
“She’s mine,” I whined.
Horse was still uncharacteristically solemn. “No, she’s not, Blaze. She gave up on you,” he replied. This non-joker side of Horse was freaking me out, especially since his words sounded like what Shaquilla has been saying. I growled wordlessly. Horse held up a hand, then popped up one finger.
“One, she left for four fucking years. Her home, her family, her husband.” He nodded towards me.
“She didn’t even file for divorce so you couldn’t find her that way.
Two, obviously you had no contact. She fucking left her phone behind.
So she didn’t want you to contact her. She was done with you. She left you.”
“I thought she just needed space after Junior’s death,” I snapped.
“Did you ask? Did you look for her?” Horse pressed the point.
I didn’t realise how fierce his eyes could get until now.
There was a lot of anger held in them. “Fuck me. Blaze, if she was mine, I wouldn’t let her out of my sight.
I’d do everything in my power to make sure she’s happy and never wants space.
I want to be her safe space.” Horse paused, then shook his head.
“You’ve never given a shit about her feelings, have you?
As long as everything is fine in your fairytale world, then you’re fine.
Fuck me, you’re a loser.” Horse struggled to his feet and limped off in disgust.
“He’s wrong,” I told Bear, who shook his head.
“Nope, he’s right. You’re a delusional loser.” Bear threw back the glass of soda he was nursing.
“Why the fuck are you sitting here with a loser then?” I sneered.
He put down the glass and returned my sneer. “I’m babysitting. Making sure you don’t get extra stupid and ruin Daisy’s life again.”
I felt blood rush to my face in anger. Bear was a big bastard, but that comment needed retaliation. I stood, but Bear was faster. Somehow, I was face down on the table with my arms jacked up behind me.
“Don’t fucking try it, asshole. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to shove your head through a wall, just for the way you’ve treated that woman. One move and I’ll get to do it,” Bear hissed behind me.
A cold shiver flowed down my back, sobering me up. Bear joined the club long after Daisy left, and yet he was willing to throw down for her. What stories had he heard?
Then my nightmare continued. Midwife and Daisy came out from the rooms, and Bear yanked me up so I could see them clearly.
“He deserves her,” Bear snarled at me. “Don’t you dare fuck it up for them.”
It felt surreal. Daisy looked freshly fucked, and glowing. Her hand was firmly gripping Midwife’s, and he was glancing at her like Dad looked at Mom. My heart felt like lead.
“They’re going to have a baby together, and he is going to do what you never did. He’s going to treat her like an ol’lady with respect and appreciation, and she’s going to stay with him,” Bear continued his hissed tirade.
All I could do was watch as Midwife turned to Daisy and kissed her, then he spun her around like a dancer.
She was wearing a kutte. She was wearing his kutte. She was laughing, and smiling, and proudly wearing his kutte.
“Go home Blaze. You smell like shit. No one wants you here anyway.” Bear spun me and pushed me to the door, before shoving me outside.
I heard the lock snap shut behind me.
I was alone. Daisy had moved on. She’d left me.
She wasn’t allowed to do that!
* * *
I found myself banging on Shaquilla’s door, instead of going home. Her face was pure fury as she yanked open the door.
“What the fuck do you want? Dylan’s sleeping.”
“I need a lawyer,” I blurted out. “The divorce hearing is in two weeks, and I need to stop Daisy.”
“Are you fucking mad?” Shaquilla screwed her face up. Her hair was bright red, glowing against her skin.
“Didn’t you say your cousin was a lawyer or something? Come on, Shaq, I need some help. Daisy just accepted Midwife’s kutte. She’s having his baby.”
Shaquilla barked out a laugh. “Wow.” She blinked and then smiled. “Good on her. He’s decent.”
“No, it’s not good. I’ve got to get her back. She’s mine,” I pleaded.
Shaquilla folded her arms and leaned against the door frame. “Really? You sure about that? Because it sounds to me like she’s Midwife’s now.”
My breath caught in my throat. Shaquilla was my best friend. She always stood by me, even when I was wrong. I needed her help.
“Please Shaquilla, I need something to go my way. I need Daisy back. She’s the only good thing I’ve got left of Matchstick. Even Molly’s turned crazy.”
“Molly was always crazy, you just didn’t realise it,” Shaquilla snorted.
I sank down into a crouch on her doorstep. The agony that I was losing Daisy was dragging me down.
“Please Shaquilla, I can’t lose her. Will your cousin help me?” It was getting harder to breathe through my panic.
“Blaze.” Shaquilla’s voice sounded soft and remorseful. “My cousin is Darcy Emerson. He’s representing Daisy. You’ve got no hope.”
A sob erupted out of me. I fell forward onto my knees. It couldn’t be true. Daisy was divorcing me.
