Chapter 12 #3
“It’s called plausible deniability, Walker!” Liam shouts back. “Finn, go help distract our FBI agent brother-in-law, will you?” Finn nods and gives us a thumbs up as he passes through the kitchen. Liam gives me an assessing look. “Ryan, you can head out too if you don’t want to hear this.”
I square my shoulders and give him a look. “Nope, I’m good. What’s the plan?”
“Alright. So, if this asshole has some sort of tracking device on her, that should be easy enough to identify, and I have the necessary equipment to do a sweep of her home and car to find it.”
I run a hand along my jaw. “That doesn’t seem sketchy. There has to be more.”
Liam growls. “Of course, there is more.”
“No one should be following her, and if anyone should be tracking her, it should be me,” Theo blurts out, and he looks apologetically to my brother and me, but he won’t find any judgement there.
Not when it comes to the safety of our loved ones.
I nod once. “Hm.”
“Hm, indeed.” Liam leans back and checks to make sure none of the others had walked back into the house. “I’m not worried about Jack, but I don’t want to put Walker in an uncomfortable position with his job. But I think we are all on the same page here.”
“And Finn is … well, Finn. He’s a good guy,” I explain.
He’s probably the best man out of the brothers and is just inherently good.
He would hate being described like that, but his perspective is a little different—and maybe it’s in part because he’s the youngest brother, and we all do our best to take care of each other.
I failed Finn once, and I’ve made sure to never do that again. I was just a child, but it changed how I saw things and the importance of keeping your loved ones safe.
“So, tomorrow, I’m going to come over and explain most of this to Savannah,” Liam says.
I tilt my head at the interesting word choice from my elusive brother.
“But not all of it?” Theo asks.
Liam slowly shakes his head. “No, not all of it. I want her to continue to act as natural as possible, and if she’s aware of what I want to do, she could subconsciously make it obvious to anyone observing her.
The reason I’m waiting until tomorrow is because I have a piece of equipment getting overnighted to me.
There are actually two pieces coming. They are tiny, smaller than a fleck of salt, really, but they’re high-tech trackers. ”
“You want to track your sister?” Theo raises an eyebrow at him.
“I want to be able to have the option to track her if we need to. It’s not a scenario I like to think about, but with the way this person is escalating, I can’t trust that they won’t directly put her in danger.
And if she’s in danger? We need to be able to get to her as soon as possible, and we can’t do that if we don’t know where she is. ”
“Are you, like, sticking something in her skin?” Theo’s jaw is almost on the damn floor, but I think it’s starting to sink in that we have no limits when it comes to protecting our loved ones.
“I thought about it, but there’s no way to do that without her knowing, or without putting her under, and I don’t want to go that far, not yet, at least,” Liam nonchalantly explains, but internal tracking administration would be a new level even for us.
Or at least, I think it would be.
“So, where do the trackers go?” I ask before I think too much about if my brother has ever injected me with a tracker.
“One is going to go on Mama’s ring that she wears every day, and one is going on the necklace with the girls’ birthstones,” Liam explains to us.
Theo nods. “She also wears that necklace daily.”
“Yep, and without her knowing about it, she won’t fiddle with it or look at it if someone is watching her.”
“And how long do we utilize these trackers?” Theo asks.
“As long as necessary, but really, I don’t see a need not to have them in place. It’s more of an insurance policy than anything else, and ideally, I’ll never have to activate the tracking protocol.”
“But if you do…” I trail off.
Liam nods. “But if I do need to, I can. I would rather have something in place and not need it than have someone I love in danger and I have no way of getting to them.” He shakes his head. “That’s unacceptable.”
I need more information, though, to know if I can trust that this is enough to keep her safe.
I trust Liam implicitly, but that doesn’t mean I just let things go, not when it comes to protecting our family.
I don’t view this as controlling our sister, but it’s about protecting her.
“Who would have access to tracking her?”
“I’m thinking just Theo and me for now, but we can reassess, if necessary,” Liam answers me before looking back to Theo.
“And for now, let’s keep this between the three of us.
We don’t need to broadcast our crazy.” Theo and I nod in agreement.
“Does this all sound like a plan you’re comfortable with? ”
Theo reaches over and claps Liam on the back. “Yeah, man. Let’s just hope this plan is overkill.”
And if it’s not, I’ll find another way for us to make sure we don’t overlook a single option in protecting our sister and nieces.
