Chapter 4 #2
Callum stayed there, forehead to forehead, as if confirming the answer in his face and not just in the word. Lawson could feel the scrape of evening stubble at his temple where their skin brushed.
It was rough enough to matter. Real enough to narrow the world. He turned into it on instinct, pressing his face into the side of Callum’s neck as another blast rattled the windows.
The sound outside rose and crashed, but now there was a second rhythm under it. Callum breathing. Callum’s chest expanding. Callum’s pulse under skin.
Lawson closed his eyes.
This, he thought with the desperation of revelation, was what he had been asking for every time he snapped and spiraled and reached for the blanket and pretended it was enough. Not less noise. Not perfect silence. A body around his body. Someone solid enough to absorb impact with him.
A flash from outside cut through the room, bright and violent even through the darkened glass. For a second the whole space came into view in stark negative. The tossed duvet. The abandoned blanket bunched near Lawson’s legs. Callum’s open collar. His mouth set hard with restraint.
Lawson drew back just enough to see his face.
What he found there stole the rest of his breath.
There was hunger in Callum’s eyes, yes, but not the casual kind Lawson had seen in clubs and penthouses and private bathrooms where everyone treated desire like a transaction with better tailoring.
This looked costly. This looked chosen against reason. It carried anger, need, protectiveness, and something more dangerous than either of them had spoken aloud.
Lawson did not think after that.
He put his hand on the side of Callum’s neck and kissed him.
It was clumsy because he was shaking. It was hard because he had wanted it for too long to manage soft.
Their mouths met with a kind of urgent bad judgment that made the rest of the world fall away through sheer force of focus.
Salt touched his tongue. Adrenaline. The rough catch of Callum’s breath when surprise gave out and desire took over.
Callum made a low sound and came back at him with enough force to push Lawson deeper into the mattress.
That should have frightened him.
Instead it settled something raw in him.
Callum’s hand stayed behind his head, not trapping, not forcing, simply making sure Lawson did not lose the line of him. His other hand spread wide over Lawson’s back.
Every place they met felt charged by choice. This was not part of the job. This was not caretaking bought by Andrew Monroe’s money. This was Callum stepping out of contract and into treason.
Lawson kissed him again, fiercer.
Callum answered with the same contained intensity he brought to everything, except now the control was bent toward Lawson’s mouth, Lawson’s breath, Lawson’s need.
He kissed like a man who had denied himself for too long and hated that fact even while giving in to it. The clash of that restraint with the need under it made Lawson dizzy.
When they finally broke apart, it was only far enough to breathe.
Callum looked at him as if the world had changed shape and Lawson was somehow at the center of the damage.
Good, Lawson thought, still panting.
Let it break.
After that first kiss, whatever barrier had stood between them stopped mattering more than the fact of skin, breath, and the need to stay inside each other’s reach.
Lawson reached for Callum with both hands, and Callum let him, then met him with a force that never tipped into carelessness. That difference mattered. It mattered more than Lawson could have explained.
Callum kissed him again, slower for one breath, harder the next, learning him at speed while still paying attention.
Every time Lawson started to drift under the crush of sound outside or under the sheer intensity of wanting, Callum drew him back with a hand at his jaw, a palm spread between his shoulder blades, a low command near his mouth.
“Look at me.”
Lawson did.
The red emergency glow from the hallway cut across Callum’s face and neck, turning his features severe. He should have looked frightening. Instead he looked like the only version of force Lawson had ever wanted near him.
His shirt had come looser at the throat. Lawson pushed it farther open just to get his hands on warm skin. Callum watched him do it with dark, focused attention that made Lawson’s stomach turn tight in the best way.
“Still with me?” Callum asked.
“Yes.”
“Tell me if it’s too much.”
The irony of that nearly made Lawson laugh, except nothing about this felt funny. Too much had been his whole life. Too loud. Too sensitive. Too difficult. Too clever in the wrong direction.
But in Callum’s mouth the phrase changed shape. It did not mean stop being yourself. It meant I’m watching. It meant your body is not an inconvenience to me.
Lawson caught Callum by the collar and pulled him down into another kiss in place of an answer.
They shed clothing with the blunt impatience of men who had no spare room left for restraint. Buttons tugged free. Fabric dragged over skin. Lawson’s T-shirt bunched under his arms before Callum stripped it away.
Cool air struck his chest for half a second, then Callum was over him again, broad and hot and close enough to cover him from clavicle to thigh.
The pressure of that contact made Lawson gasp. Not because it pinned him in a way that trapped him. Because it pinned him in a way that told his body where it ended.
The sounds from outside kept coming. Water against concrete. Wind driving itself at the house. The occasional violent crack overhead. But each one receded whenever Callum touched him with purpose.
A hand spread at his hip. Mouth at his throat. Fingers working down his spine in slow, firm passes that seemed to smooth some internal snag loose each time.
Lawson’s hands were less disciplined. He wanted everything at once. The hard line of Callum’s shoulder. The roughened jaw scraping over his neck.
The dense muscle across his back. He touched like a starving man and Callum took it, let himself be pulled, let Lawson map him in broken handfuls.
“Cal,” Lawson said, and the private name slipped out as naturally as breath.
Callum went still for a split second.
Then his eyes changed.
The look he gave Lawson after that was almost too much to survive.
“Say it again.”
“Cal.”
Callum kissed him like the name had gone under his skin.
Lawson’s body answered with helpless honesty. His breathing turned ragged. His nerves, so frantic before, began to gather around the places Callum touched.
The palm braced at his nape. The arm under his back, drawing him close. The firm pressure of Callum’s thigh between his. The steadying hand that returned to his chest whenever his breaths went too shallow.
That was the miracle of it. Callum wanted him, visibly, fiercely. Lawson could feel that in every taut muscle and rough exhale. But he never stopped tending the line between intensity and overload. He never stopped reading Lawson’s face, adjusting, coaxing, containing.
Lawson had spent years being treated as a malfunction that needed correction. Under Callum’s mouth, under Callum’s hands, he felt something he had not known to ask for.
Not repaired.
Not managed.
Wanted exactly as he was.
The understanding tore through him with enough force to make his eyes sting. Callum noticed immediately.
“Hey.” His thumb brushed the corner of Lawson’s eye. “Stay here.”
“I’m here,” Lawson said, though the words shook.
Callum bent and pressed his mouth to Lawson’s, gentler this time, and Lawson opened to him without defense. The kiss deepened. Their bodies moved together with mounting urgency, mattress giving under them, breath breaking, skin slick and hot where they met.
Callum shifted lower. He took Lawson into his mouth, the wet heat wrapping tight and working him in a rhythm that left no room for thought. Lawson’s hips jerked once before he caught himself.
Callum held him down with one broad hand and kept going, unrelenting in his focus. Pleasure coiled sharp and embarrassingly fast through Lawson’s gut.
He came hard, pulsing against Callum’s tongue while his fingers twisted in short dark hair and his mind blanked out in pure relief. Callum swallowed every bit of it, then eased back up with a look that said he had only started.
Lawson’s limbs felt heavy and loose in the aftermath, his chest still rising fast. Callum gave him a few breaths to settle before he slicked his fingers and worked one inside him.
The stretch pulled a low sound from Lawson’s throat. Callum added another finger soon after, moving with patience that bordered on reverence while he watched Lawson’s face for every reaction. When Lawson began to push back into the touch, chasing more, Callum withdrew his hand and lined himself up.
He pressed in slow enough for Lawson to feel every inch of the breach. The burn gave way to fullness that stole his breath and made his thoughts scatter.
Callum stayed deep once he bottomed out, one arm braced beside Lawson’s head while the other cradled the back of his neck. Their eyes held. Lawson felt exposed in the best way possible, seen straight through and still wanted.
