CHAPTER 1 – THE ALPHA’S MARK

The night air tastes like fear.

It settles on my tongue the moment I step into the clearing, sharp and metallic, like blood waiting to be spilled. The pack house rises behind me, all stone and shadow, but out here under the open sky is where power is decided. Where it is displayed.

Where it is enforced.

Torches circle the gathering, flames bending in the restless wind. Wolves in human form stand in quiet clusters, their voices low, their eyes never still. Every movement is measured. Every breath carries meaning.

And every single one of them knows I don’t belong here the way they think I do.

Whispers follow me as I walk forward.

“That’s her.”

“The Alpha’s girl.”

“Not his mate, though.”

I keep my head up, even as my chest tightens. I’ve learned how to walk through this. How to pretend their words don’t scrape against my skin.

But my wolf hears them.

She shifts beneath the surface, uneasy, pacing. Not afraid. Not weak.

Just… wrong.

Something about tonight presses against my instincts in a way I can’t ignore.

I slow near the center of the clearing, the heat from the torches brushing my arms. The scent of pine, smoke, and wolves wraps around me, thick and familiar.

And then it changes.

His scent cuts through everything else.

Dark. Commanding. Unavoidable.

“Emma.”

My body reacts before my mind does. My shoulders stiffen. My pulse stumbles.

Daniel Reed steps into view like he owns the night itself.

Because he does.

He’s taller than everyone around him, broad shoulders filling the space as if the world made room just for him. His gray eyes lock onto mine, sharp and controlled, but there’s something deeper there tonight. Something heavier.

Possession.

The crowd parts without a word as he walks toward me. No one blocks an Alpha. No one even risks standing too close.

I don’t move.

I can’t.

He stops in front of me, close enough that I feel the heat of him, the weight of his presence pressing down like a hand at my throat.

“You came,” he says, his voice low, steady.

“I always do,” I reply, keeping my tone even.

A flicker of something passes through his eyes. Approval. Or expectation. With Daniel, it’s hard to tell the difference.

His hand lifts.

For a second, I think he might hesitate.

He doesn’t.

His fingers close around the back of my neck, firm, guiding, not asking. He pulls me closer until there’s no space left between us.

A quiet ripple moves through the pack. I feel it more than hear it.

This is not subtle.

This is a message.

My breath catches as his thumb brushes just under my jaw, tilting my head up. His touch isn’t rough, but it isn’t gentle either. It’s deliberate. Controlled.

Claiming.

“You should stand beside me,” he says. “Not out there, letting them talk.”

“They’ll talk anyway,” I answer softly.

His grip tightens, just enough to remind me who I’m speaking to.

“Let them,” he says. “It doesn’t change what you are.”

The words settle heavily between us.

What I am.

Not who.

My wolf shifts again, sharper this time, pushing against my ribs as if she wants out. Her reaction is immediate, instinctive.

Rejection.

I swallow it down, forcing a calm I don’t feel.

“I didn’t come to be displayed,” I say.

Daniel leans in slightly, his breath warm against my ear. “Everything in this pack exists to be seen, Emma. Strength. Loyalty.” His voice drops lower. “And what belongs to me.”

The words send a chill through me.

Around us, the pack watches openly now. No one pretends not to see. No one looks away.

This is a claiming.

Not the sacred kind whispered about in old stories. Not the kind sealed by a true mate bond.

This is power.

My stomach turns, and not just from nerves.

The life growing inside me shifts faintly, a quiet, undeniable presence. His heir.

The truth I can’t escape.

I press my lips together, fighting the wave of emotion rising in my chest. Gratitude, fear, confusion. They tangle together until I can’t separate them anymore.

He took me in when I had no one.

He gave me a place in this pack.

So why does standing here feel like suffocating?

“Daniel,” I start, keeping my voice low, “this isn’t necessary.”

“It is,” he says without hesitation. He pulls back just enough to look at me fully, his gaze sweeping over my face like he’s searching for something. “They need to understand where you stand.”

“And where is that?”

Something dark flickers in his expression.

“At my side,” he says. “Where you’ve always been.”

My wolf snarls softly inside me.

No.

The reaction is so strong it nearly makes me flinch. I force myself to stay still, to keep my expression neutral.

“You’re not my—” I stop myself before the word slips out.

Mate.

The silence that follows is dangerous.

Daniel’s eyes narrow slightly. “Finish that.”

I shake my head. “It doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

Of course it does.

Everything does when it threatens his control.

Before I can respond, the wind shifts.

And something changes.

It’s subtle at first. A thread in the air. A scent that doesn’t belong.

Clean.

Sharp.

Electric.

It cuts through the smoke and pine and wolf like lightning through a storm.

My breath catches.

My wolf goes still.

Then surges forward.

The reaction is violent, immediate, nothing like what I feel with Daniel. It’s not pressure. Not control.

It’s recognition.

My heart starts racing, faster than it should, faster than I can explain. I turn my head instinctively, searching.

“What is it?” Daniel asks, his tone tightening.

I barely hear him.

The scent is stronger now, pulling me, guiding me.

Through the crowd.

Past the edges of the firelight.

To the tree line.

A figure stands there, half-shadowed, barely visible between the trunks.

Tall.

Still.

Watching.

I can’t make out his face, not clearly, but I feel him.

The way you feel a storm before it breaks.

My pulse pounds in my ears.

“Emma.”

Daniel’s voice is sharper now, edged with warning, but I don’t look away.

The stranger doesn’t move.

Doesn’t speak.

But something passes between us in that silence.

Something deep. Ancient. Unwanted.

Unavoidable.

My wolf presses forward again, restless, drawn.

Mine.

The word isn’t mine.

It isn’t his.

But it echoes inside me anyway.

The man’s head tilts slightly, as if he’s caught the same pull. As if he feels it too.

Then—

He’s gone.

Just like that.

No sound. No movement I can track. One second he’s there, the next the shadows swallow him whole.

I blink, my breath coming faster now.

“What did you see?” Daniel demands.

I turn back to him slowly, my mind still caught in that moment, in that scent that hasn’t faded.

“I… I don’t know,” I say, and for the first time, it isn’t a lie I’m choosing.

It’s one I’m living.

But something inside me does know.

Something that won’t stay quiet much longer.

And as Daniel’s hand tightens possessively at the back of my neck again, pulling me closer, the truth settles deep in my bones—

Whatever just found me in the dark…

is going to tear my life apart.
