CHAPTER 8 - WAR BENEATH THE MOON
The clearing still smells like blood and fear.
Mine.
Theirs.
Something older.
I stand at the center of it, barefoot in damp earth, my pulse still too fast, my skin too tight for the power humming beneath it. My wolf hasn’t fully receded. She lingers just under the surface, restless, watching.
Waiting.
Every eye in the pack is on me, but I don’t look at them.
I look at Daniel.
His expression hasn’t settled since I shifted back. Shock fractured it first. Then calculation. Now something darker has taken root behind his eyes, something that makes my stomach twist.
He doesn’t see me.
Not really.
He sees what I am.
And what I could become.
“You’ve been hiding this,” he says finally, voice low but carrying across the clearing.
It isn’t a question.
My throat feels raw. “I didn’t know.”
A lie. Or maybe not. I didn’t know like this. I didn’t know it would feel like fire and freedom at the same time.
Daniel steps closer, slow and deliberate, like approaching something dangerous he still intends to own.
“You expect me to believe that?” His gaze drags over me, assessing, hungry. “That kind of power doesn’t just… appear, Emma.”
Before I can answer, a growl cuts through the clearing.
Deep. Controlled. Lethal.
Ryan.
My head snaps toward him, and the world seems to tilt for a second. He stands at the edge of the circle, shoulders squared, eyes locked on Daniel like he’s already decided how this ends.
My pulse stutters.
The bond between us flares—hot, insistent, impossible to ignore.
“Step away from her,” Ryan says.
The words are quiet.
The command isn’t.
A ripple moves through the pack. I feel it in the shift of bodies, in the sharp inhale of breath, in the way people glance at each other like they’re suddenly unsure where they stand.
Daniel doesn’t move.
Instead, he smiles.
It’s slow. Cold.
“Careful, Ryan,” he says. “You’re starting to sound like you’ve forgotten your place.”
Ryan takes a step forward.
Then another.
Each movement is deliberate, like he’s measuring distance, calculating impact.
“My place,” he says, “is wherever I decide it is.”
A few wolves shift uneasily. Someone on the left—Marcus, I think—takes a half-step back. Others lean in, drawn by the tension.
Daniel’s gaze flicks briefly to the pack, registering the fracture, the hesitation.
He notices everything.
Of course he does.
“You think this is about you?” Daniel asks, his tone sharpening. “This is pack business.”
Ryan’s jaw tightens. “She is pack business.”
The words land harder than they should.
Something in my chest tightens, then steadies.
Daniel turns back to me, as if Ryan hasn’t spoken. “You belong to this pack,” he says. “To me.”
There it is.
Claim.
Ownership.
Something in me recoils.
“No,” I say, the word slipping out before I can stop it.
It isn’t loud.
But it’s enough.
Silence falls, heavy and immediate.
Daniel’s head tilts slightly. “No?”
My hands curl at my sides. I can feel my wolf pushing again, restless under my skin, reacting to the tension, to the challenge.
“I don’t belong to anyone,” I say.
The lie burns.
Because the bond between me and Ryan pulses in my veins, undeniable.
Daniel hears it too. Not the bond itself, but the shift in me, the defiance.
His eyes narrow.
“That’s where you’re wrong.”
Ryan moves before I can react. One second he’s a few steps away, the next he’s beside me, close enough that I can feel the heat of him, the steady, grounding presence.
His hand brushes mine—just barely.
Electric.
Intentional.
“I said step away from her,” he repeats, softer this time, but somehow more dangerous.
Daniel’s attention snaps fully to him now.
And something changes.
The air thickens, charged with something primal and violent.
Two Alphas.
Neither willing to yield.
“You’re overstepping,” Daniel says. “Again.”
Ryan doesn’t look at him right away. His gaze drops to me, quick but searching, like he’s checking for something only he can see.
“You okay?” he murmurs.
The question shouldn’t matter.
But it does.
“I don’t know,” I admit.
His mouth tightens, just slightly. Then he nods, once, like that’s enough.
When he looks back at Daniel, whatever restraint he had left is gone.
“I’m done stepping around you,” Ryan says.
A murmur runs through the pack.
Daniel laughs under his breath. “You’ve always been impatient.”
“And you’ve always been controlling,” Ryan shoots back. “Looks like we’re both staying true to form.”
Daniel’s smile disappears.
“Careful,” he says again, but this time it’s not a warning.
It’s a threat.
Ryan doesn’t flinch. “You’re losing them.”
He doesn’t gesture, doesn’t need to.
I can feel it too now. The shift in the pack. The uncertainty. The quiet questioning that wasn’t there before.
Daniel feels it.
His shoulders stiffen, his posture sharpening as he reasserts dominance, pushing his presence outward.
Power rolls off him, heavy and suffocating.
My wolf bristles.
Ryan’s lips curve, just slightly. “Yeah,” he says softly. “They feel it too.”
Daniel takes a step forward, closing the distance between them.
“Watch yourself.”
“No,” Ryan says. “You watch me.”
The words hang there.
A challenge.
Clear. Undeniable.
My heart starts to pound again, faster now, louder.
This isn’t just tension.
This is about to turn into something else.
Something worse.
Daniel’s gaze flicks to me, then back to Ryan.
Understanding settles in, sharp and sudden.
“You think this is about protecting her?” he asks.
Ryan doesn’t answer.
Doesn’t need to.
Daniel exhales slowly, then nods, like he’s come to a decision.
“Of course,” he says. “That’s what this is.”
His eyes darken.
“She’s your weakness.”
The words hit harder than they should.
Ryan goes very still beside me.
“Careful,” Ryan says quietly.
Daniel smiles again, but there’s no humor in it.
“Or what?” he asks. “You’ll challenge me?”
Silence stretches.
The entire clearing seems to hold its breath.
I can feel my pulse in my throat, in my wrists, everywhere.
Ryan takes one step forward, putting himself fully between me and Daniel.
Claim.
Protection.
Choice.
“Yes,” he says.
The word is simple.
Final.
The reaction is immediate. Voices rise, then fall again as Daniel lifts a hand, silencing them without looking.
His attention is locked on Ryan.
“You really want to do this?” Daniel asks.
Ryan’s voice is steady. “You already know the answer.”
Daniel studies him for a long moment.
Then he laughs.
It’s sharp. Cutting.
“Over her?”
My chest tightens.
Ryan doesn’t hesitate. “Don’t make this about her like she’s something to win.”
Daniel’s gaze snaps to me again, slow and deliberate.
“Everything is something to win,” he says.
My skin crawls.
The bond between me and Ryan flares again, stronger this time, almost painful.
Daniel notices.
Of course he does.
His expression shifts.
Understanding.
Then something darker.
Possession.
“Well,” he says slowly, “this just got interesting.”
He steps back, giving them space, but his presence doesn’t lessen. If anything, it expands, filling the clearing with pressure.
“With witnesses,” he adds, glancing around at the pack.
My stomach drops.
No.
He wouldn’t.
But he would.
He absolutely would.
Ryan tenses beside me. “Daniel—”
Daniel raises a hand, cutting him off.
“If you want her,” he says, his voice carrying, cold and commanding, “fight me for her.”
The words slam into me like a physical blow.
The pack erupts—voices, protests, anticipation—but I don’t hear any of it clearly.
All I hear is the echo of that sentence.
Fight me for her.
I look at Ryan.
He doesn’t look at me.
His eyes are locked on Daniel, something wild and unrestrained rising in them.
Something that answers the challenge.
My chest tightens, fear and something dangerously close to hope twisting together.
“Ryan,” I say, my voice barely steady.
He finally glances at me.
And in that brief moment, I see it.
Not just anger.
Not just dominance.
But choice.
And something deeper.
Something that terrifies me more than anything else in this clearing.
He isn’t backing down.
Not for Daniel.
Not for the pack.
Not even for me.
When he looks back at Daniel, his voice is low.
“Fine.”
The word settles like a death sentence.
Or a beginning.
I don’t know which.
But I know one thing as the tension snaps tight enough to break.
This isn’t just a fight for dominance.
It’s a war.
And I’m the center of it.
