6. Chapter 5 #2
A throat clears, and I look to see Dr. Thomas walking towards us, his eyes on Sammie, and he mentions, “His father was Dr. Aimes’s high school boyfriend but had an affair with her sister.
The whole town knows the story,” and I nod in understanding as Dr. Thomas addresses Sammie, “Does your aunt know you are here?”
Sammie wrinkles his nose in a cute way and denies, “No, she thinks I’m with Mama, but she forgot about me at the diner again. I walked here so I could tell Thunder not to hurt my auntie and that if he takes her home, to take me with him.”
Fuck me.
“Fucking Rachel is such a fucking bitch,” Axel mutters. “She used to hit on the brothers, but we knew she was married. I just had no idea the doctor you wanted was her sister, I didn’t recognize her in Doc’s office.”
“You know it doesn’t work that way, right?” Dr. Thomas says softly, and Sammie frowns.
“But brothers normally want their girls to follow them. I know my Auntie Scott, if she loves someone that much no matter what she promises, she will go with them. Granny and Mama are mean,” the boy says, then looks at me, “Tell me you don’t want my auntie?
Because I know she wants you or she felt something, like one of those spark thingies when she saw you.
I just want her to be happy for once and not work all the time. ”
Fuck this kid, he’s something special.
Axel nudges me, and I know he’s telling me to just tell the kid the truth, and I admit, “I want your aunt,” and he nods once, then demands, “Then you need to make sure you take me with you when you go home. She won’t leave without me, and I don’t want to stay with my mama and dad.
They don’t look after me like Auntie Scott does, they don’t love me like she does. ”
“Fuck, I don’t think I have ever wanted to wrap a kid up as much as I do right now, which is saying something considering I have my own kids,” Dagger grunts, and fuck, I’m right there with him.
A phone rings and Dr. Thomas curses before I hear him say, “Scottie,” just as sobs echo and Sammie and I both look at the phone sharply.
“Dr-Dr. Thomas, I-I, I need your help,” she sobs, and I take a step forward with concern. “I-I know you are a part of the club and I-I, my dad called, S-Sammie, my nephew is missing, my-my sister left him at-at the diner and returned to my-my parents without him, p-please, I-I, I need your help…”
Fuck, my stomach twists and tears at her sobs, and if that isn’t a sign that she’s mine, then I don’t know what is.
“She was meant to be his mama,” Axel mutters, hearing her distress, and I nod as Sammie whispers, “I think she may ground me this time…”
“He’s at the clubhouse, sweetheart,” Dr. Thomas says softly, and Scottie lets out a relieved sob, then confirms, “I’ll be there in ten minutes, p-please keep him with you…”
“Will do, sweetheart. Try and calm down before you drive, okay?” Dr. Thomas murmurs softly, and she chokes, “Okay,” before hanging up, and Sammie whispers, “Oh yeah, I’m so grounded…”
“That woman loves you like her own, mister” Dr. Thomas says, and Sammie replies, “And I love her, which is why I needed to see Thunder.”
“And I get that, but you should have had a waitress call her,” Dr. Thomas scolds gently, and Sammie flinches but nods.
“You know I can’t just take you with us, right?” I say, not denying I’d be taking his aunt. I will be even if I have to knock her out, and he nods once, then says, “But the club can help so you should be able to take me too.”
I blink, then blink again.
Did he just say?
“You’re like six, right?” I choke, and he nods once, then says, “I’m seven in four months, but the teachers talk about the brothers a lot. Auntie Scott says I have big ears.”
The brothers chuckle while I shake my head with a small smile, then nod to an empty table and say, “Come on, big ears, come take a seat until your aunt gets here.”
He sighs but does as he’s told, and I raise a brow at an amused-looking Axel before following the kid, calling, “Bring the kid a milkshake,” before taking a seat opposite him, and I say, “Alright, Sammie, tell me about your aunt,” and he grins as he leans forward and begins, “Well, she’s twenty-five and nothing like my mama, dad, granny or uncle. ”
***
“She’s been working at Prince’s convivence since she was like fourteen or something.
She never takes money from granny and grandpa like my mama and uncle do.
Her job is her everything,” Sammie explains and the more he explains about the woman I’m entranced with, the more of a pull I have towards her.
I need to make her mine and help her. This kid is pretty freaking cool too.
According to Doc, he was conceived through an affair and is shoved in his aunt’s face as much as possible.
But according to him, he is his aunt’s whole world and is never shocked when she walks in from a shift to find him at her house.
His mama is neglectful and today proves it.
“Dr. Thomas?” I hear a siren say in panic, and I turn in my seat to find the beauty herself, wearing her scrubs and a doctor's coat. She has a phone glued to her ear, looking around the room.
As soon as she spots Sammie, her whole body relaxes as her beautiful eyes tear up and she chokes, “I have him, Dad, he’s safe.”
“Here, sweetheart, pass me the phone,” Dr. Thomas says as he takes it from her, and he says, “Marshall, it’s Doc,” as Scottie rushes our way, not once looking at me, which, I must admit, I fucking hate.
“Sorry, Auntie Scottie,” Sammie whispers as he stands, and the sweet woman takes him into her arms and presses her nose against his head.
“It’s okay, it’s okay,” she chokes and fuck, everything in me softens as I watch her treat the boy like he was her own.
I know, even though I have barely said more than a few words to her, that I’ve just met her, that she is going to be mine.
He will be coming home with us, one way or another, after convincing his aunt to uproot her life for a complete stranger. Easy, right?
