Chapter 49
Chapter 49
T he force of the helicopter blades sent the snow piling into a curtain across the opening in the front of the cave.
Gertie scrambled up and back into her clothes, hopping about in a fury of being freezing, and slightly pink from other reasons.
The helicopter had a dazzling light at the front of it and she couldn’t see a thing. It only just managed to fit on the ledge. She shielded her eyes and walked forward.
“What?”
The figure that came out from behind the light, once the blades had more or less stopped moving, had its arms stretched wide.
“Gertie!”
Gertie blinked.
“I am here! To rescue the heroes!”
And Calum Frost gracefully bowed. To Gertie’s utter astonishment, he was wearing her scarf.
S TRUAN WAS ANNOYED because Jim and Gavin made him get in a stretcher, which was embarrassing. Gertie was annoyed because Calum had let a TV journalist come along and try to ask annoying questions about how she felt rescuing all those children. And Calum was annoyed because Gertie was very shy with the journalist, forgot to name-check Calum’s airline live on air for picking her up, and was happier sitting at the back of the helo talking quietly to Struan to keep him conscious, even though it was clear the danger was mostly over.
“You okay?” Calum said to Gertie, who nodded.
Then she screwed up her face and asked, “Did they let YOU land the helicopter?” and he had to say no in front of the woman filming.
“Oh!” said the journalist, as they came in to land. “Also the fashion department wants a word about taking some photos—apparently the children were wearing incredibly designed high fashion knitwear?”
