Chapter 26

EDDIE

From the start, my actions had been diabolical, but nothing was as sinister as what I came up with next.

I mean, I’d just lied and told April that my wife liked getting pregnant so that she could abort the babies.

What could be worse than that?

Those were just words, and we all know actions speak louder than words.

It was time to spring into action.

Before April left, I needed to discuss something with her.

“I want us to have a second place to meet up,” I said.

“Okay,” she said, not loving where this was going. “Why?”

“Just in case.”

“What, are you worried your wife is going to find out?”

“No, she loves being a lawyer. That’s all she’s concerned with right now. Still, we’re discussing some nefarious shit, and should err on the side of caution.”

“I get it. Where’s our other meeting place going to be?”

“There’s a Little League baseball over on Amherst and 17th.

It’s only used during baseball season, which is not in season.

It’s literally a ghost town during all other times of the year.

I will be there at nine a.m. every Monday and Friday.

If anything happens, and you feel like we shouldn’t meet at the hotel, then come find me at the Little League field. ”

She was still skeptical.

“If you say so.”

“I do say so.”

Once April left the hotel, I sat back on the bed and let my mind wander. I always waited about twenty minutes after she left.

The hotel I’d chosen was called Hotel Pico after the street it was located on, well, technically, Pico Boulevard.

It was a dive, and people at the Hotel Pico knew not to stare at anyone too long.

Still, I learned to be cautious. So I always paid strictly in cash and wore a hat and sunglasses whenever I checked in.

I’m sure the guy at the front desk knew I was up to no good, but the first time I checked in, I offered to pay in cash and leave an extra twenty bucks for him. He seemed okay with the arrangement.

As I sat counting the twenty minutes, I decided that April was not a completely lost cause.

I know she’d said she wasn’t a killer multiple times, but I didn’t believe her.

She just needed a push in the right direction.

Anyone—and I mean anyone—can become a killer if the exact right scenario unfolds.

And if April thought David was going to divorce her, that might just be the push she needed.

And that’s when I decided I was going to let David know about the affair.

It was time to turn this motherfucker up.
