Chapter 33

APRIL

We’re leaving our phones in the car tonight.

I had been suspicious of David since he’d gotten back from work on Friday night. And when he’d asked me out for dinner that afternoon, that feeling only doubled. Making things even more fishy, he decided to park his car on the street when there was a perfectly good valet at Shudders on the Beach.

And now, he suggested we keep our phones in his car. This was all too much, and my Spidey senses were activated.

As we walked away from the car, I noticed he didn’t press his fob to lock it. “Detective” April was on the case.

We were seated next to a window. One seat had a view of the ocean, and the other, the view of the street.

“Here, I’ll give you the view of the ocean,” he said, and pulled out that chair for me. Which meant he had a view of the street—and his car.

I didn’t think I could get any more suspicious, but here we were. I can’t remember the last time he pulled out a chair for me and suggested where I sit.

For the first few minutes, David was looking in my direction. Then, I noticed his eyes dart to his right a few times, and I knew something was up.

I took out my makeup kit and removed the mirror. Sure enough, as I shuffled the mirror to focus on David’s car behind me, I saw—clear as day!—someone open the door to his car.

I’d seen enough. I put my makeup kit away and grabbed the menu from the arriving waiter.

“Detective” April had performed brilliantly.
