Chapter 50

EDDIE

Everything happened so quickly.

I fired the gun three times, and I was pretty sure I’d hit David Devers directly in the chest, but with his headlights partially blinding my windshield, and the flash from the gun itself, I couldn’t be sure.

And what I couldn’t have had happen was for David to survive his injuries. One, because April wouldn’t receive the money, and two, because he got a brief look at my face as we locked eyes.

I quickly got out and walked the ten feet to David’s car, which had hit a parked car on the other side of the two-way street.

He was alive and managed to ask me if April had been behind this. I managed to give him a sarcastic Magic 8-Ball answer. I said, “Signs point toward yes” or something along those lines.

I have no idea why I chose to be a smart ass in the man’s final seconds on earth. Probably because I’m not a good human. Less than a second later, I raised the gun and shot him in the head.

I ran back to my car and quickly took a left onto Berkeley Street. I pulled my hat closer to my head as I approached Wilshire Boulevard. I took a left on Wilshire and made my way up to the 405 freeway. I was driving at the same speed as traffic, making sure not to stand out.

About thirty yards before I entered the 405, I saw the first police car. Its lights were on, and it was headed west on Wilshire.

I didn’t encounter any police cars while on the 405 south.

My license plate was still covered in duct tape, so I kept a close eye out.

Luckily, none appeared. When I took my exit fifteen minutes later, I pulled into the inlet I’d been at earlier.

I removed the duct tape from the back of the car and headed home.

I’d only been gone a little over an hour.

I was pretty sure I’d just committed the perfect murder.
